NY Times: No Superhighway exists
Submitted by GeorgeWashington on Fri, 11/30/2007 - 08:58
Reporting:
"The L.A. Times wonders how likely is the construction of the Mexico-U.S.-Canada superhighway that Ron Paul warned against in Wednesday’s debate.
A border-spanning “NAFTA highway” now on the drawing board, Paul said, would link the U.S., Mexico and Canada, worsening illegal immigration and threatening American independence. “Our national sovereignty is under threat,” Paul warned.
Federal and state highway and trade officials and transportation consultants reacted Thursday with befuddlement and amusement. The fearsome secret international highway project Paul described does not exist, they said."

Chilling!
I remember the first time our U.S. President George Bush (the senior) used the phrase "New World Order". That caused me to have chills running down my spine at the time.
has anyone seen these admissions from Robert Pastor?
Robert Pastor was interviewed by Jerome Corsi concerning the North American Union. By the way, Robert Pastor is a CFR member who is considered the main architect of the North American Union.
from Dec. 15th, 2006:
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=53378
"North American Union leader says merger just crisis away":
Excerpts:
Robert Pastor, a leading intellectual force in the move to create an EU-style North American Community, told WND he believes a new 9/11 crisis could be the catalyst to merge the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
"What I'm saying is that a crisis is an event which can force democratic governments to make difficult decisions like those that will be required to create a North American Community," he said. "It's not that I want another 9/11 crisis, but having a crisis would force decisions that otherwise might not get made."
Our founding fathers created a system of governance that was not designed to be efficient but was designed to protect freedom. Therefore, you created checks and balances that did protect freedom but also made it difficult to move forward on important issues."
Pastor affirmed he favors globalism.
"I believe," he explained to WND, "that globalization is a net plus for the world economy, for the middle class, and for all people."

Wow.
I really can't believe that MSM would try to blatently lie like that. CNN is officially an irrelevant tabloid.Mainstream media is dead.
The mainstream media is dead.
Secret Highway?
You know, this is a fairly good example of how bureaucrats and politicians use words to deceive the public and shape opinion.
Technically, this statement is correct "...Federal and state highway and trade officials and transportation consultants reacted Thursday with befuddlement and amusement. The fearsome secret international highway project Paul described does not exist, they said...".
If they had simply said : ...the international highway project..., then they would have been been guilty of lying. But it is accurate to say that a "secret highway" does not exist.
The highway is a well known fact.
Print Out the Map and Show It to People
Print out the page referenced below and show it to people with whom you discuss this issue. The page shows a map of the fabled NAFTA Superhighway. This map is published by the folks who are lobbying for the construction of this chimerical thoroughfare.
The map used to be a lot bigger and was on the front page of the site. I wonder why they changed it? You can easily see how products from China will be shipped to Mexican ports, placed on Mexican tucks and allowed a free pass straight into the heart of the United States. It's not good for American labor and it's not good for American security.

Thank you GW for the education
This thread may or may not have been bogus. It may or may not have intended to obfuscate the issue. I don't know. I don't know who GW is or what his motivations are. What I got out of it is an education on the subject. I am not stupid! I can read and fact-check. There is so much smoke, so much bull out there and I can't possibly pay attention and read about all of it. But the service that GW has done for me is to jerk my chain to educate myself. So my conclusion? Dr. Paul does know what he is talking about. There is a highway "project" on the boards, under construction, in various stages of completion, planning, under whatever jurisdiction or name... it matters not. There is highway project whose purpose is clear to me. If three countries are going to joint in whatever form, for whatever purpose, what's more natural infrastructure than a highway? Thank you GW and all the rest of you folks for the education.
As planned.
Because it is happening outside of government, no one can vote on it and the media doesn't have to report it.
"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order."
"We are grateful to the Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subjected to the lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government. The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual elite and world bankers is surely preferable to the national auto-determination practiced in past centuries."

The new format confused me, so if this posted above, I meant it to be a reply to Jane.
Hi Jane
I've seen this quote before and it is damning. I have tried to source it but I only end up finding it quoted on "certain kinds" of websites.
If you could provide a "mainsteam" source for this quote I would be most grateful.
Thanks!

Just wanted to add, the jerks at nytimes haven't approved my comments on the topic. Apparently, the subject is too on-topic that it is considered off-topic. MSM can eat it.
You know, I thought something was fishy
with that article only having ~16 comments. Perfect You Tube moment again. Type your comment, video yourself sending it in, video the comment failing to appear. Then switch IDs, comment on something else, and watch it appear. The MSM loses another 10,000 readers.
CNN is imagining the possibility of a superhighway as well?

It needs to be on the front page permanently - for the next year - at the very top.

of course it does not exist
and it will not exist if Paul is president. this is such a minor issue compared to his economic policy though
either way, why is everyone so afraid of the mexicans?
The threat to our sovereignty is the issue,
not the invasion of illegals. Please don't make this into a race issue---it isn't!
The United States of America is a constitutional republic, Canada and Mexico have different forms of government, and we should not compromise our sovereignty by agreeing to a North American Union.
Bad economic education and bad policy
for the last 100+ years. Still... the real issue here isn't the good or bad of the Highway. It's the media trying to make Dr. Paul look like a loon who's just making the story up.
Paul believes in threat of North American superhighway
Seize the day!
We know the NAU is very real...A call to arms to get your pens out, people...the media and the public need an education!.....We can crack this thing wide open and get Dr. Paul some publicity as well !!
Paul believes in threat of North American superhighway
The GOP presidential candidate says U.S. sovereignty is at risk. Highway and trade officials and transportation consultants say there are no plans for such a project.
By Stephen Braun, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
November 30, 2007
WASHINGTON -- The man from Arlington, Texas, could barely contain his smirk as he looked into a computer video camera to pose a question of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul.
Paul's followers talk about such conspiracy theories as "merging the United States with Canada and Mexico . . .," the questioner said in a YouTube video shown during the Wednesday debate. "Do you really believe in all this?"
Paul did not miss a beat. The Texas congressman coolly raised the specter of a dire new national threat -- an as-yet unbuilt superhighway.
A border-spanning "NAFTA highway" now on the drawing board, Paul said, would link the U.S., Mexico and Canada, worsening illegal immigration and threatening American independence. "Our national sovereignty is under threat," Paul warned.
Federal and state highway and trade officials and transportation consultants reacted Thursday with befuddlement and amusement. The fearsome secret international highway project Paul described does not exist, they said.
"There is no such superhighway like the one he's talking about," said Ian Grossman, a spokesman with the Federal Highway Administration. "It doesn't exist, in plans or anywhere else."
"It's complete fiction," said Tiffany Melvin, executive director of NASCO, a consortium of transportation agencies and business interests caught in the cross hairs of anti-highway activists. "This is the work of fringe groups that have wrapped a couple of separate projects together into one big paranoid fantasy."

Super Highway
I live in South Texas and I drive a part of the highway daily. In fact the street I live on intersects with it. If one would like to see the highway under construction use Google Earth and search Laredo, TX.. Start at the border and fly North. The images are out of date as the overpasses shown in that section of the highway are now complete.
It gives me great pleasure to be one of Ron Paul's paranoid nut cases.
the mainstream media is
the mainstream media is responsible for holding back the development of mankind by keeping people in the dark, by convincing them to concentrate on trivialities, and worst of all, to keep them entertained so that they are completely ill-informed when it comes to reality. In a truly free society, we need a free exchange of open and new ideas from people who actually know what their talking about (whens the last time you saw someone with a PhD on tv?). One of the most crucial things we have to accomplish, among other things, is to find a way to either break down or compete with these conglomerates. They truly are holding back mankind, we could be so much more as a civilization.
"Great minds often encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds." - Einstein
"Truth is treason in the empire of lies." - Ron Paul
We have the internet--
for a free exchange of ideas. The trouble is that many people are not online and don't intend to become computer savvy.
Have you noticed that when something of alarming significance, such as the suspension of the Pakistan constitution, arrest of Pakistani judges and lawyers becomes news, it is very soon replaced with some "news" story of horrifying proportions such as the Laci Peterson, Natalie Holloway, Baby Grace stories. Move along---Nothing to see here---
I guess the only solution is to know our neighbors and make it a point to visit and inform.
Ummmmm.
We're there. You're on it. It's happening right now. It takes a little time. Rome wasn't built in a day, nor did the Empire fall in a day... but it was bound to happen.

http://www.hudson.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=hudson_upcoming_e...
"Those who seek to understand what's behind the chatter about Bush's Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) as a possible prelude to a North American Union (NAU), similar to the European Union (EU), should read the 35-page White Paper published recently by the prestigious Hudson Institute called "Negotiating North America: The Security and Prosperity Partnership." This Washington, DC think tank is blunt and detailed in describing where SPP is heading.
Here's how Hudson defines SPP's goal: "The SPP process is the vehicle for the discussion of future arrangements for economic integration to create a single market for goods and services in North America." The key words are "economic integration" (a phrase used again and again) into a North American "single market" (another phrase used repeatedly).
"Integration" with Mexico and Canada is exactly what North American Union means, but there's a big problem with this goal. "We the people" of the United States were never asked if we want to be "integrated" with Mexico and Canada, two countries of enormously different laws, culture, concept of government's role, economic system, and standard of living."
[...]
"Among the people who take SPP seriously are Rep. Virgil Goode (R-VA) who introduced H.Con.Res. 40 opposing a North American Union and a NAFTA Superhighway, similar resolutions introduced into the state legislatures of 14 states, and Rep. Duncan Hunter's (R-CA) amendment to prohibit the use of federal funds for SPP working groups, which passed the House by the remarkable bipartisan vote of 362 to 63 on July 24, 2007."
Does the NYT suggest that 43 Congressmen are wrong?

Title: Expressing the sense of Congress that the United States should not engage in the construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Superhighway System or enter into a North American Union with Mexico and Canada.
Sponsor: Rep Goode, Virgil H., Jr. [VA-5] (introduced 1/22/2007) Cosponsors (43)

As of today, there are 43 cosponsors:

Among them are three presidential candidates:
Rep. Duncan Hunter [R-CA]
Rep. Ronald Paul [R-TX]
Rep. Thomas Tancredo [R-CO]
So, is the Congress wrongly believing in the possibility of "the construction of a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Superhighway System" or the possibility of "a North American Union with Mexico and Canada"?
Excellent work!
