Anyone else quit watching TV?

What a waste of time, 75 channels and nothing worth watching. Just wondering if anyone else has walked away from the commercial wasteland?

Has it ever occurred to you

... how Hollywood and TV portrays evil [bad guys], they are usually Middle-Eastern Arab types, even in children's cartoons (get 'em young) ?

Like we didn't know.

..... Animal Mother: Well, if you ask me, uh, we're shooting the wrong gooks. ...

If we want to

save our republic we must inform people of the truth. As we try to unspin the weave of lies that makes up their individual veils it helps if we know how they were formed. You must understand the lie in order to advocate against it.
I have not believed TV for many years to me it is the slime as Zappa said. It is there to manipulate the masses.
We who have turned it off are free. But we understand it is propaganda that is being fed to the public. The only way we can explain the truth is by tearing out their foundation. We must watch them construct this foundation on which their pyramid of lies is built.
I know it is difficult and sometimes hard to stomach. However you must understand how the person you are debating is driven by their 'truths' . We must undermine their core beliefs.
Quite frankly we are currently in the process of an international debate which will change our paradigm soon.
Their side has the media
Our side has the truth.

i havent

i still find certain shows really fun to watch.

On the other hand i dont rely on tv for information, only entertainment.

and in addition, i dont actually pay for the cable i receive, its something that comes as an added bonus with cable internet in my building (old wiring, apparently no way to splice the two).

as long as you dont drown yourself in it all day every day and realize that television is merely a tool for entertainment then i feel that it can be pretty harmless in responsible hands.

I just cancelled Dish Network

after 10 years. The primary reason is my 6 year old is being influenced in a negative way and losing her innocence from watching young teen shows on the Disney channel. I still spend a few hours a week watching "TV" but now it's clips I've bookmarked from the DP and other sites of interest. I can't stand to watch the news anymore with the exception of Lou Dobbs. We still have Netflix so we can watch movies and concerts and they now have many movies and TV shows that you can stream in real time. The secondary reason is to save the $45 per month. I'm going to use it to buy some beer and to send Peter Schiff some help.

gave up cable in '95

had 3 channels on rabbit ears and watched specific programs like the debates. Set the whole shebang on the curb this spring. Neither of my grown children have tvs in their homes. yay!

Just turning the sound all the way down does wonders!

Your body doens't like for you to eat poison and crap, why would one think the brain would like it any better.

The best way to detox from TV is to turn the sound all the way down and turn it to the Travel Channel for the visuals.
D

Been doing that

The wife is fine when I do that with her soaps on when I'm really in a curmudgeons mood [Now].

Works good when watching CNBC too.

i'm starting to read more

i'm starting to read more books.

however, when i do watch TV, my mind is under my control.

i watch it mainly to see what they're feeding the sheep.

The slogan press on has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race. No person was ever honored for what he received. Honor has been the reward for what he gave.

I am so lucky to live where reception is so terrible.

Many years ago { 1980's } I gave up on T.V. because the reception was so bad where I live.
My home business did great because I wasn't distracted.
We do watch DVD's.

However, I'm now spending way too much time in front of the computer, getting fatter, getting angrier, and losing my formerly pleasant personality.

Ron Paul Is My President !

beesting

I watch some tv.

I think I have my mind under my own control thank you. I usually don't turn it on except after five or if the weather is bad. Mainly watch movies, documentaries and ocasionally the news so I can see what is influencing the sheople. It helps to know what kind of nonsense they are controlled by if you are trying to get through to them.
And I have to ask. If none of you watch tv how are you always reporting what goes on on the news and playing clips or posting links from tv shows? Maybe many of you don't realize what you see on the net comes from tv?
Oh and I watch C-span and Glen Beck. Before you yell at me for watching GB. Much of what is on his show I heard here first. Sometimes I don't like his twist, but I can say the same about some commenters on this site too. Although I love you all and enjoy reading your different views and occassinally expressing my own. ~Peace my friends

yes i feel much better

its the best thing i ever did. it was like a huge burden was lifted when i turned it off. we even turned it off in my office. now we listen to music. tv is controlled by very evil people. why let it scare, pollute & poison our minds?

We have not had a tv for years

When you are away from it for a long time, then see it in a hotel or at someone's house, it is SO obviously, glaringly brainwashing and mind numbing, not to mention dumbing down. My little girl even sees this and thinks it is stupid. Get rid of it, for your families sake, and for your own sanity.

EXACTLY! I rarely watch TV,

EXACTLY!

I rarely watch TV, though I have one for watching DVDs. Actually, the only reason I signed up for cable again was to see Ron Paul in the debates. (then I got stuck in a 2 year contract - lol). Anyway, I rarely watch it.

But I remember staying at a hotel, and in the morning, at breakfast, in this little breakfast nook, they had a huge TV - like a 50-incher - crammed in that little room blaring the morning "news." After having been away for so long, you see the phoniness of the news - the fake jokes, laughs, and smiles. The plastic faces, the perfectly pitched voices to convey any emotion desired, tuned just like an instrument. And the commercials were way louder.

It was, really, offensive. Brainwashing at breakfast?

The funny thing about the TV - have you ever noticed this? - If you walk into any public place - restaurant, bar, etc. that has a TV on, people's eyes naturally gravitate up towards the TV. Always. It gives the word "programming" an entirely new meaning. It is like everyone is tuned in, receiving their instructions.

LOL to keep from COL (crying out loud). Lol

It is so cliche to say it

It is so cliche to say it anymore, but today's TV programming just screams "1984" -- even down to the "two minute hate" (though it is actually, the "60 minute hate" otherwise known as Bill O'Reilly).

grateful sums it up

My cable has been off for years, it's strange at first when the house is so quiet, but as said above - when you get exposed to it after getting your own mind back, the propaganda is glaringly obvious - and yes, my kids see it, too.

As someone said here a long time ago: They call it "programming" for a reason.

We watch on occasion

but not for long because all the commercials make me nervous. My son recently THANKED me for not getting cable when he was small. ( They begged almost everyday.) LOL Our tv was very old and very hard to watch too. LOL

We stopped awhile back...

it was down to the wife recording one series she liked, other than that we never watched it anyways.

So what we did is cut everything but an internet connection, bought an xbox and kept our netflix account.

For those who don't know or haven't tried it, a Live! subscription (50 bucks a year) a netflix account (12 bucks a month) and an internet connection gets you a ton of movies-on-demand. The movies we've watched so far are high-quality as far as definition.

We figure it saved us about 600 dollars a year for something we were not using anyways... our cable subscription.

We also turned off our phone and went with Magic Jack... so our home phone costs 20 dollars a year. I'd highly recommend magic jack, btw. It is excellent

:)

Boy oh boy

... you are the one mom warned me about ! All kidding aside, thanks for the great info. Good drop ;)

I will definitely look into it. Can you get my wifes Japanese TV station NHK too ? It's costing us $31 a month (Dish).

I just printed you post (1st time I ever did that).

I've no idea about NHK...

But I showed a neighbor our setup last month and he went and did the same thing. The cable guy came out to put a ~trap~ on his line and asked Ron (the neighbor) if he was doin the netflix/xbox thing. When Ron told him yes, the cable guy said that he'd been doing the same for a few years, but recently a whole lot of people are doing it.

It seems to be a popular idea.. :)

My son-in-out-law

... knew how to pirate everything. For awhile there I had everything under the sun. One guy he was doing it for was so mad when my ex-son-in-law couldn't get to him right away, threatened to kill him. Funny sh!t ! He threatened the wrong guy, you don't want to know what happened.

He worked for cable and satellite while drawing full disability from the USPS. When the Postal inspectors were tailing him, he'd get out and confront them threatening to kick their ass. I'm surprised he is still alive, let alone still working for USPS. Good Union ? Only in America.

I assume that this is the

I assume that this is the new XBox 360, and that it has to be the XBox because of IE. Is that correct?

Yes.

The XBox 360 has a free plugin that allows you to connect with netflix.

Our issue was we had this huge widescreen and a surround-sound setup that we never used anymore except to watch movies. So we just bought a xbox 360, plugged it into our router and that's all you need to do.

You still have to put the movies that you want to watch into your Que from your computer, but watching them takes just a controller click.

What Liberti did is select a few hundred that we may want to watch and threw them into the Que.

Remember that scene from the Matrix.. where Neo asked for guns and rows and rows of gunracks slid into the scene? That's what this looks like on your television... a row of a few hundred DVD covers that you navigate to choose what you want to see. You can rate them from your XBox, there is a synopsis and rating listed, etc.

The ones we have watched so far are HD quality, we have never had an issue with connection speed.... it is just awesome all the way around.

And of course there is a billion other things to do on an xbox... I can manage my email with it while watching a movie, for instance.

Nice. I might have to look

Nice. I might have to look into that. We currently get Netflix, but yes, it would be great to watch a movie with my nice projector system.

I got the Blockbuster one week $10 special (1 at a time 24/7)

Cheaper than pay for TV and the movies.

Just wanted to tell everyone who likes good action movies who has not seen "Grand Torino" and "Taken" you won't be disappointed. My 45 year old daughter swears she was watching a movie about me [Clint Eastwood] in Grand Torino. The movie "Taken" was eerily prophetic for me, I have a fourteen y/o granddaughter that it reminds me of (scary). Sunday she called me that she and five friends had broken down many miles away on their way to Great America Amusement Park and had no money, only packed lunches and a ticket to get in. Her father acts like a white trash hillbilly with flames painted on his hood (a line from Grand Torino) and she was calling for my help. Thank God for Bill Gates, I located where the kids were with Map Quest and after calling a couple Taxi companies before I found one that would accept a charge card (faxed) $50 later they got to Great America. They had a ride home.

I stopped watching about 5 years ago..

Don't miss it one bit.

I killed my TV in 1997

One evening in 1997 while watching TV, I got so angry that I threw a heavy class right through the TV screen. Why? Because it was so frustrating being lied to and not being able to slap the talking head liars in the face (or at least call them a liar). It was ALL just one way blather. Fake laugh tracks, rapid flipping images, propaganda and constant commercial interruptions that destroyed what little entertainment there was. I found that my splitting headaches and sleeplessness ended shortly after destroying my TV.

Admittedly, I purchased another small LCD TV for only playing select Blockbuster video rentals, but I have never since reconnected the cable or antenna. These videos are under my total control and I limit the viewing to three videos per week. I am much happier now and don't miss the tube in the slightest. Note: The dead TV greatly improved my love life as well. :-)

“Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information and religions destroy spirituality”

My son shot his TV

with a Ruger .30 Caliber Carbine revolver I bought him for his birthday. The TV was an earlier present. Wasn't that the TV was lying to him, someone must of gave him some bad weed. Kids...

No one ever bought me a TV or gun is his problem. Spoiled.

everyone here wants to one-up the previous poster

"I quit 8 months ago"
"I quit 2 years ago"
"I quit in 1996"
"I quit in in 1984"

I quit in 1932.

One-up this one.

LOL

People are saying, "I quit watching TV, except for South Park, Family Guy, I Love Lucy, Star Trek, etc."
Gimme a break, already !

uhhhh

are you just being funny????

or am i really that scarce?

dude......like.......what were you doing in like.....you know.....1994 and shit?
like......tv was SO OVER.

i left for music college and never looked back to my parent's tele.

ok.....so what if i ran over to a friend's house on 9/11 and hit the grasvity bong all day in front of a big screen......

you gotta be shittin me if you're going to call that tv watching.

when i have changed internet service providers or home phone companies - the guy on the other end of the line is ALWAYS pushing the tv into the mix......"so.....you want internet and phone,......but what about tv cable? we gotta great 3-fer....." ..........meaning the price for each service gets better with the addition of tv.

but it stills goes up, the price that is.

when my wife and i go to her mom's house to eat or say hello - the tyv is always on. i indulge her for the small time that we're there by sitting down with my mother-in-law on the couch - staring blankly into an electric set.

i learn nothing.
i get no enjoyment out of it.
i feel my life literally passing before my eyes....THROUGH my eyes.

television is exactly what one of it's creator said it was.
a machine that takes too much attention from the individual who uses it.

some people can have it on in the background like my mother-in-law without it driving them insane.

i find myself wanting to drop off a cliff whenever i'm close to one.

I threw my last TV in the trash

in 1996.
Haven't had one since.

I do watch some TV at friends' homes when visiting, so I'm not utterly "TV free".
But I do have very minimal exposure.
