NASA erased the original moon landing tapes?

I remember hearing years ago that NASA lost the original tapes of the moon landing. The problem has been discovered. Supposedly someone erased the tapes for reuse.

It sounds like they were getting rid of evidence. The most reprinted pictures of all time, and they let them sit unprotected in a giant warehouse with loads of other crap.
Is it just me or does that add to the suspicion of what really happened? How did they get through the Van Allen Radiation Belts?

For the love of God. NASA lost a space probe because they forgot to convert from Metric to English units.
(Not to hate on NASA or anything, but they do make mistakes-- I think they're pretty cool to be honest.)

No it doesn't add to the suspicion. And they get through the Van Allen Radiation Belts by going through VERY fast-- so fast that they are only exposed to 1 rad worth of radiation. (It takes like 100 rads to make you sick-- 1000 to kill you etc). In short they used a rocket to fly through the belts very quickly, they didn't stick around to get radiation poisoning.

A few years back Wired magazine had an article about this issue and if I'm remembering correctly, the author was a bit suspicious as to how the original recording of probably the most important space mission in history was lost. I remember the article being quite long. Anyhow, figured I would mention that in case anyone wants to look it up.

There's no way....
those tapes would have been re-used. It's just some kind of cover-up excuse. I know after this most historic event, the videotapes - & they would have been huge tapes on reels, would have been carefully labeled & stored. You're all thinking & talking about VHS cassettes. Those didn't exist in 1969. If they still have the Zapruder film, they still have the moon tapes, unless someone wanted them destroyed.
It Was An Accident
Someone accidentally took that tape and used it to record an episode of "Bewitched," a very popular show in those days. After recording over the historic event, it was left in a pile of videotapes available for borrowing that was kept in the breakroom and was misplaced for years; that's why it wasn't known to be missing for a long time. Understandable foul-up, it's the kind of thing that happens around my workplace as well. I don't think there's anything odd about it; just one of those things, it could happen to anyone.

I say it was just a stupid mistake.
Before you guys get freaked out too much..
My job was to track Birds for the Navy, nothing special.
We recorded 2 digital, and 2 analog tapes every time a cluster of 3 traveled over.
The tapes were stored in a library for a given period of time. Then degaussed and reused. We moved them around in carts..Like the ones the AV geeks used in your High-school.
This was important data too. But more than once I saw new, just recorded tapes accidentally get put on the "to be degaussed" cart. I saw people dismount, and remount the same tape..to immediately be recorded over..All kinds of stupid stuff.
this mistake could be made so easily.especially in a Lowest bidder, government worker environment.

I can understand them
I can understand them reusing the tape. However, these are not just anything documented. These were the most widely printed photographs EVER. If we have a gold phono copy of Daydream Nation from Sonic Youth, I'm pretty sure they should have known these are a national treasure and kept them with the utmost care.

I think so too, Kid.
As a matter of fact, I watched it as it happened, when I was a kid! I felt in awe to be one of over 600 million people from all around the world, all watching together, all hoping for the safety of the astronauts, all wishing we could move forward together into a newly awakened world of love and peace. It was actually quite a spiritual experience. But alas, it was all an impossible dream. It was all a dream except for the fact that we really did land on the moon. At least that is what I believe!

I just finished watching it, myself.
After the special they showed what looked to me to be some of the original footage of Apollo 11's landing (digitalized, of course). What did you think? Then after that, they had another show on with some scientists talking about different aspects of the moon (it's many effects on the earth, theories about it's origin, etc). One of the scientists stated that there were mirrors placed on the moon's surface (by the Apollo 11 astronauts) which helped to show that the moon is moving away from the earth by about 1 1/2 inches per year. Not to worry, though. He also said that the sun would burn out hundreds of thousands of years before the moon leaves its orbit of the earth.
When you add to that all the facts that have been learned from the rocks brought back, it sure sounds like they were really there to me.

How does one ERASE tapes of supposedly the greatest feat of mankind? I could understand maybe parking lot surveillance footage, but COME ON!!
