FIRST TIME I ever felt like this????
Okay........I have been here for a long time, and I am 100% prepared. I read all of your posts, and have my food storage, my water filtration systems etc....
Yesterday I had the weirdest experience I have ever had....
I wanted to grill this night, and I thought a couple ears of corn would be good with the steaks, so my girlfriend and I went to Safeway to pick up some corn and some strwberries as a snack. We walk in, and start looking. The entire shelves were bare. I asked the produce manager if they had any more in the back? He said..."Nope, we are cleaned out till next week." All that was there were the price tags for corn and strawberries. I thought...."No big Deal", we go to the next store, Fred Meyer. This is a big store and I expected to pay a little more...but guess what? The shelves were bare......same thing......just price tags on what used to be a HUGE display of corn and strawberries. I told my girlfriend......"No Problem" lets go next dor to WINCO foods. We arrived at Winco, and the strawberries were cleaned out, and the corn section was 20 people deep grabbing ears of corn like crazy.
I got my corn on the cob for the nights grilling.....but this entire scenario was a rude of awakening.
I explained to my girlfriend that I have never experienced this type of feeling before? She laughed at me....because she is Russian, and she expalined to me that in communist times (When she grew up 1980's) this was a common problem. She told me stories of shortages of everything from soap to food. I was astounded...because it has happened to me for the first time right now.
In my opinion....this gave me a little glimmer into the future......we (Normal Americans) are so spoiled, and are so used to having the stores full of products, we never think about shortages........well.....this is what is coming in my opinion. It just hit me. My food supply at my house is now going from 90 days to 1 year.
Call me paranoid......but this was the weirdest feeling I have ever had! It was a feeling of helplessness. It was a feeling of...."You are screwed." I have never felt anything like this before. It was weird......maybe I am crazy........but WOW...it was real.

That what "she" said.......
:)
90 days is 100% prepared?
I don't think any of us are 100% prepared because we can't know what's going to happen. The possibilities are endless. Even if it was just a short-term supply glitch if sounds like it was a good enough wake-up call to make you plan further out.

Sounds like the problem to me
is that the price of corn and strawberries are just too low in your area. Assuming there isn't some regulatory problem, the free market will even out the demand when the grocers realize what's going on and raise the price.
I guess it depends a lot on location...
Up in the Pacific Northwest, you probably don't grow a lot of corn. Here in NJ we're tripping on it. It's corn season and the corn is good.
Having said that, your Russian girlfriend is absolutely right. This is hoe ot will start. Areas far from the farmland will suffer first. Areas closer to the farm will be taken care of by governmental regulation concerning 'organic farming' and restricting how much corn (or whatever) a farmer can produce.
All the food shortages in the world are managed crisis's. It's not that a nation can't feed itself, it just that the government comes along and knocks the food out of our hand on it's way to the mouth.
I can imagine the cost to ship fresh corn to Oregon. With fuel prices back up around $2.50 - $2.60 a gallon, it makes for some pricey corn. In the poor economy, produce sellers are afraid to buy too much for fear of not making a profit on it. Buying less assures they will sell it all but it also projects the image of a 'shortage' which is not the case at all.
This is a very important thread and I feel it should be front-paged for all to read.
This will be coming your way, folks. It doesn't matter where you live, it's coming your way.

What part of the country?
What part of the country are you from, if you don't mind my asking? I only ask so I can better guage how long it will be for me to be in that situation. I'm from Western Washington. We grow corn and lots of other produce, but we import a lot as well, and on the store shelves I see crops from Mexico and Canada quite a lot.
Well
Portland, Oregon here
The cheapest corn on the cob
around here is 58 cents an ear. There seems to be plenty of it -- maybe because no one is buying it for that price. Watermelon ranges from 38 - 65 cents a pound, and they aren't flying out of the store like they used to. Prices are way up over last year. There is plenty of everything, though.
I remember way back when, my parents wouldn't buy watermelon for us kids until the price went down to 2 cents a pound, from the 2 1/2 cents a pound the stores charged for the first watermelons of the season.
I Understand
I just expected....as any normal American would.....to go to the store and pick up some corn for the evening.......and to see it cleaned out from store to store...and then to see the panic buying at the last store I went to just seemed a little "eerie" (Not to be a pun on corn..lol)
It just made me think a little......and the same thing with strawberries...
And after talking with my girlfriend who is from Russia explaining to me that this was common was just a little weird.
It just felt weird in my gut.
I have never felt this "Helpless" type feeling.
I may be crazy......or a "Kook" like Dr. Paul.

half-cent
Same way a gas station tacks on the extra 0.9¢ per gallon.
D4L is that a trick question?
Why you use a fiat dollar bill of course, it's only worth half a cent. :o}
With a half-cent piece.

happens here
I have posted about it before, on and off here in Central California empty shelves or very few things stocked on the shelves. I asked about it once and the employee said it's because there's not enough help to stock the shelves?? I never noticed it until I think last October when everything dramatically changed. You can see it everywhere from Walmart to Rite Aid. it may very well be due to them being short-staffed because of so many lay offs though. What about chickens? You can eat eggs and have a garden and fruit trees. I would think that would be enough to survive on for a while? That's what we've done. Have you read about Peking ducks? They are supposed to hatch lots of chicks and be very good to eat too and easy to care for. Just think of the third world where you see all the starving kids and they always have chickens and goats and pigs running around.
That's interesting...haven't noticed that phenomenon around here
Perhaps because a lot is local? That reminds me that a friend of mine gave me a squash, a zuccinni and an onion from her garden that I need to use. I am but one person so I better get started huh?

Hey Dee,
That sounds like a great start for a yummy summer dish: chop up your squash, zucchini and onion and add about 4 TBS of (canned) diced tomatoes, 1 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp ground black pepper, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1/2 tsp basil. Then melt 1 TBS bacon grease in a large skillet, add vege mixture, cover and cook over low-med. heat for 15 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. You can freeze any leftovers, if you want to. It's quick, easy and really tasty, and it's healthy!

Am eating my experiment now (I call it an "experiment" because
it is essentially a whole new concoction with the 3 main ingredients.) Only one thing I would have done differently would have been to peel the squash (a little tough on the skin there lol). Ok, well, it was too good to eat and write about it at the same time, so I am finishing my comment now that I am done scraping my plate. :-P
Took a bit of effort to cut all that stuff up as it was a huge zucchini and the squash wasn't exactly tiny either. Anyhow, finally got through cutting all that up and heated a pan of canola oil and added the squash, onion, and zucchini and cooked them until they were tender enough to stick a fork in easily. Boiled some water for spaghetti and added sausage-flavored tomato sauce to the veggies. Plated it and topped it with some garlic salt and parmesan cheese. SOOO GOOODD!! Thanks for the inspiration anyway, really did not go by your recipe at all though! LOL

Not to worry,
You can use any oil you have on hand, but you might want to cut back on it a little bit. I just like the flavor of the bacon better!
Btw, do you have an opinion on HAARP (technology for weather wars vs. global warming)? Check out my thread on it if you get a chance.. pretty interesting stuff!

Interesting but I'm not sure what I think. I won't say that it's
not plausible, but I don't know that I can wrap my mind around the concept either.
I may have to wait till tomorrow on my veggie dish as I was too tired from being out in the heat today to stand next to a hot stove. lol

Ok, so the price of corn is in dramatic collapse.
This is because the US Department of Agriculture is telling us that the number of acres planted in corn this year is huge compared to last year.
So far I have purchased at WalMart once some very sweet corn. Then the next time I purchased some corn that tasted like sawdust, same store. So I bought some locally grown corn, full of worms, that was somewhere between sweet, and sawdust, but at least there was extra protein.
I will head up to the local WalMart tomorrow and let you know what the corn situation is, but I seriously doubt that this is the expected collapse of the food distribution system.
Of course this is the future, but I suspect that your experience is isolated and has something to do with something other than production this year.

This is a great opportunity to mention the importance of
gardening. I did some work (tiny job) for a guy the other day and instead of asking for cash, I asked for steamed crabs (it's a MD thing). With my crabs, I had a nice big salad and a few ears of corn, all out of the garden. And nothing beats buttering the corn with fresh homemade butter.
I have to ask, did you guys just go eat some of your stored food?

Gardening only produces 10% to 20% of the calories we intake.
So what you you propose for the rest of the calories that will keep us alive?

Hostess Zingers & peanuts? I don't know.
I was just saying that you can save a trip to the grocery store when you've got a nice garden.
Just out of curiosity, couldn't you just increase the amount of calories you intake from your garden? Or grow more stuff?
I think you could actually survive on a garden and a weekly fishing trip.
And don't forget, chickens!

An individual is capable of determing the amount of nutrition that is derived from their land. Good grief. How did people ever exist before a store was opened?
