Bernanke Says Independence Produces ‘Better’ Economic Outcomes

July 26 (Bloomberg) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the central bank’s independence from political interference in setting interest rates produces “much better results” for the economy.

“We are very, very sensitive to this issue,” Bernanke said today at a town-hall-style meeting in Kansas City, Missouri, taped for broadcast on PBS television this week. “We need to have some independence from Congress and the administration.”

KANSAS CITY, MO. - Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has been grilled repeatedly on Capitol Hill recently for the troubles continuing to roil the nation's economy. On Sunday, he let the American people take a shot. Bernanke will appears on a PBS "Newshour"-sponsored town hall forum held in Kansas City.

Forty local residents joined "Newshour" host Jim Lehrer in asking Bernanke questions. Lehrer also asked queries e-mailed from across the U.S.

The one-hour event will be broadcast in 20-minute installments on "Newshour" on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with a full broadcast of the forum on local PBS stations and online later.

This will air on PBS for three consecutive nights on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. The segment broadcast dates are Monday, July 27, Tuesday, July 28 and Wednesday, July 29. PBS will also feed the complete one-hour special program to local PBS stations for broadcast on or after Wednesday, July 29, and it will also be available for viewing on the Online NewsHour Web site.
