Once again I find myself
Submitted by truthy on Tue, 07/28/2009 - 18:53
turning to the great people on this web site for information. Here's my question this time: What is the proper or best way to use the food grade white buckets/pails to store food? What should be stored in them? How? Anything else aside from food that I can or should store in them? I have a source so I can get all I want at no charge. Now I just need to know exactly what and how to use them.
Thank you all in advance!

Get bottled nitrogen and 5 gallon plastic buckets with lids. Run a hose from the nitrogen to the bucket and turn it on and fill up the bucket with the foodstuffs.. Turn the nitrogen off and put the lid on. When using the stored food, always scoop from the top and never tilt the bucket as nitrogen is heavier than air and will stay settled in the bucket.
Also I heard the putting dry ice in the bottom of the bucket will have the same results.
Where do you find those buckets for free?
I could use some. Whom should I ask?

Buckets
can also be found at donut shops. I am not sure how to get the sweet smell out of them.
The bakery
at the grocery store. :)

I have all my grains in rubbermaid bins.......the bucket idea is handier.

The way we did it was.
We ordered some mylar bags that fit inside the bucket, and then poured the powdered milk, beans, rice, wheat, etc into the bag while it was in the bucket. Pull up on the edges of the bag as you fill it, to make sure you have used all the space of the bucket and bag.
We had a CORDED handheld vacuum cleaner, and sucked all the air out, and then folded the mylar bag over a piece of 2 x 2 wood. We used an iron to seal the bag, and then pulled the vacuum out at the last second, and ironed over it to seal it.
We put a couple of oxygen absorbers (large) in the bottom, and three on the top for good measure.
Snap the lid down over the bucket, and tape around the seal.
If you have a tractor with an auger bit, or fence post digger, they will fit perfectly in the hole, stay cool, and have anywhere from a 5 to 25 year shelf life depending on what the food is.. This is the bullet proof long term storage method IMO. It is worth the extra couple of bucks, and the effort involved.

Wow, that's great
I think there are others here who could probably answer that better than I.
If you store food there are packets that you can buy that is suppose to keep the stuff fresh. You know when you buy something and you find that little packet in there that's to keep it fresh but I can't remember what they call it.
Seems like rice, grains, sugar, flour, oh, my gush the list is endless. Those are so great because you can stack them. It might be a good idea to mark the containers on the front so you know what is in them. Good luck.

That is a tough one truthy ...
I am not even sure what kind of buckets you are talking about.
Can you be a little more specific?

They are buckets used in the deli and bakery
departments of grocery stores. I had read online (maybe even this site) that food grade buckets with lids are what people should use to store food and grain long term. I didn't know if you put the bags of rice in them or open the bags and dump them in or use a liner or what. That's just an example.
Reminds me of a movie
The Gods Must Be Crazy
Story is about a primative tribesman finding a cocacola bottle and bringing it to the tribe and the changes the tribe by individuals finding ways to use the bottle and fighting over using it... and then they threw it away.
I'm using 5 gallon buckets to grow upside down tomatoes, I'm also using them for the chickens, egg buckets. They are suitable as crocks for making saurkraut and kimchee, also sour dough starter, biscuit mix, pie crust mix, granola, pickles, olives, I have several buckets for compost/worms.. I mix mud, joint compount, paint, grout.. small batches get mixed in the buckets and best of all they make great Holloween buckets ;))

Take a close look at that little guy in that movie, when he
smiles he resembles our current POTUS. The first time I saw BO I thought of that movie.

"Since 1789 the only government on Earth that has the power to crush the American people`s liberties across the board is the government of the United States"
