July twenty-second, 1948 a young couple in Monterrey Mexico stepped into a movie theater to watch the premiere of a new American movie. A cartoon by the rave of the time, Walt Disney; the movie title, Pinocchio, the couple, my parents; one day before their wedding. They were married the following day, an unimportant day to anyone but them, July 23, 1948, but important to this essay because it dates the premiere of Pinocchio for me.

When I mentioned that in the closing for my book, America: An Outsider's View from the Inside; what do you thing? I would be using a storyline based on Pinocchio; my mother had to tell me her amusing anecdote about the day before their wedding. She also wanted to know, why I'd chosen this particular movie.

"It is very simple, Mom," I said, settling in for a long conversation. "In the movie, Pinocchio is lured away from education by some rather evil men who take him down the path of joy and fun, toward the inevitable conclusion of becoming so ignorant he winds up turning into a dunce, jackass, a beast of burden, used by the owner of the arcade to run the carnival rides from the background. This unscrupulous man captures more and more children with the sweet lure of joy and fun."

You're welcome.

I particularly liked the reference to Pinocchio...I had forgotten that story.
