Report from Rand's weekend in Western KY (8.1.09)
Submitted by anti-fairtax on Mon, 08/03/2009 - 08:52Rand Paul needs all the help he can get in Western Kentucky. This was the first big weekend he's traveled to the area for 4 different speaking events (even bringing along his wife and kids). On Friday he spoke at the McCracken Co. GOP Women's lunch and the Marshall Co. GOP Dinner. Saturday morning started with the Graves Co. GOP breakfast and ended with the 129th annual Fancy Farm Picnic, the largest picnic in the world and Kentucky's biggest political event. Republicans and Democrats from all over the state travel to the Picnic to support their favorite candidates, and to boo and heckle their opponents. I was only able to attend the McCracken Co. lunch and the Picnic, so my perspective can only be based on those events. I do not know how the crowd reception was at the other two.
Friday's lunch in McCracken Co. was interesting to say the least. There were a handful of Rand suporters, but most of them were the typical, neoconservative Republicans that seem to be more about "party" rather than principles. Rand was given only a few short minutes to speak, but everyone welcomed him and listened respectfully. When he was done, harldy anyone asked any questions. I thought maybe the crowd just wasn't passionate about politics in the first place. But up next was Trey Grayson, Rand's opponent for the Senate nomination and current KY Secretary of State. This guy has been around for awhile, was a former Democrat, has Sen. McConnel's and Sen. Bunning's approval, and evidently is in tight with all the local Republicans. It was clear to me as soon as he began his speech that the room was drunk on his kool-aid. His speech was full of emotional appeals, constantly referencing personal family stories (how his daughter took her first walk on 9-11, how his dead grandpa must be smiling down on him from Heaven, etc.) And trust me, the crowd was buying every second of it, even though he never made it clear what his stance was on any issue. When he was done, the questions came flying: "What about illegal immigrants?" "What about our local businesses?" I knew then that it wasn't that these people didn't care about issues, but that they were automatically on Trey's side. Two Rand supporters attempted to challenge him. When the question was asked, "Why should we vote for you over Rand?" his response was because he has more experience, that he knew everyone there, he always comes to the GOP events when invited and therefore we know that he actually cares about us. When asked, "Do you know our Father's hated democracy and that we are a Constitutional Republic?" he admitted that America is not supposed to be a democracy, but that when he uses the term "democracy" people know what he means, and that he doesn't use "constitutional republic" because it's too lengthy. In other words, he skirted around the questions and never offered any real substance or clarity to his positions. But let me tell you, those GOP Women are in love with him!
Saturday at the Fancy Farm Picnic was in my opinion, a success. There was a good balance between Rand and Trey supporters. Several people wearing shirts, stickers, waving posters and handing out material. During the Democrat speeches, Trey Grayson's supporters were unified and loud with their chants and heckling. I was prepared for the worst when Rand took the pulpit. But to my astonishment, no one made a negative comment or boo (except for one man implying Ron Paul was a career politican). Rand's speech mainly pointed out the hypocrisy of both parties and promised to never vote on a bill that he hasn't read. He was eventually cut-off with loud country music through the PA system for exceeding his time limit. I believe Rand made a good impression on the Republicans there and his enthusiastic volunteers certainly had a distinct presence. However, be prepared for a major smear-campaign against Rand for not putting his hand over his heart for the national anthem. He was one of the only ones on the stage with his arms folded, and I immediately heard Trey's fans talking trash about it. If you hear these rumors, make sure to point out that it was the national anthem, not the Pledge of Allegiance. They will try to spin it any way they can.
My whole point for writing this is to let you know that Rand's nomination will not be easy against Trey Grayson. It's gonna take alot of volunteering, lots of money, and lots of influence in the community. If you live in Kentucky, get involved in the local GOP groups and start helping them realize Trey is not a true conservative, reveal him for the opportunist he is. Engage in friendly debate. Their ideas of government have to be completely changed. Also, it is CRITICAL that we donate as much as we can on August 20th for the RunRandRun.com money bomb. Rand cannot go up against Trey successfully without proper financial support. It's reported that Trey's already raised $600,000. We need to beat that. Do not hesitate. Don't be lazy. Be diligent. We can make this happen!

Even if he doesn't win a LOT of people
will get educated & Rand wll learn the game & make valuable connections.
GO FOR IT!
Agreed
Hear hear.
If Rand's senate run can do for Kentucky what his father's presidential run did for America in terms of waking people up to true liberty/constitutional values, the danger of the Fed, etc., then it's worth every penny we can raise for him, whether or not he wins.

Little off topic but...
Some how the average Republican needs to learn the history of the pledge that it was written by an ardent socialist thee idea coming from European socialism in an attempt to replace god with the state...
It appeals to their statest tendencies and has the word God in it so their is probably no amount of educating that would work...
I'm a Rand Paul pledger,
but let me wear my old campaign manager's hat for a minute.
Rand needs to become more appealing. He needs to do something different with his hair. He typically looks like he just got out of bed and didn't bother to comb/brush his hair. Not good PR.
Rand needs to be taller. Not much can be done in this area without being absurdly obvious. Maybe some shoes with heels...
All the Rand videos I've seen are very poor: poor color, poor sound, lifeless/ listless candidate, some shot from very bad low angle. Are there no KY videographers who can do better? Also, never shoot the candidate leaning back in his seat, whether in chair or sofa. We want/need erect or leaning forward dynamism in every view, especially for Rand because he does not project dynamism in other ways.
I point out these deficiencies because there are tons of voters still asleep in partisan dreamland and they have little interest in issues. They react to what they perceive as visual, vocal, and behavioral leadership traits, the same traits any successful car salesman or televangelist utilizes. They will be staring a Rand's unkempt hair while he is trying to tell them his stands on the issues. It doesn't matter how right he is if he doesn't pass muster with the sheeple.
New Hampshire and Ecuador.
lifeless/listless candidate?
I disagree, I think he's a great speaker. He speaks at a very nice pace with no stuttering/hesitation, very easy to listen to, has a pleasant personality. Sure, he's not as fiery as his father, but so what? Southerners are a more laid-back type of people it seems like, so I think they are going to like Rand a lot.
I would even venture to say that Rand is a better speaker than Ron. Just my opinion.
I hope he never changes his hair. People used to tell Ron Paul
he should change this and change that, and I'm glad he did not heed that stuff and remains himself. It's him we love. Let's not go Hollywood. Rand's truth will come through, just like Ron's, and he's good-looking just as he is.

Rand is getting better every
Rand is getting better every time I hear him speak.
The crowd didn't boo him. He was the only candidate for Senate that didn't get booed.
We definitely need to GOTV on this one. We have got to work, HARD, NOW. Under KY law you only have until Dec 31 to change party affiliation to be eligible for the primary.
If anyone wants to help, we sure can use it. We have been hitting every county fair and gathering we can find. We are running on fumes already.
You can contact me directly to volunteer.
I have yard signs for anyone in the Lexington or Richmond area.

My Fancy Farm Report
My impression was a bit better. I only attended the picnic but Rand's supporters were everywhere. We were the only ones out in front of the picnic waving signs at traffic. A big Rand Paul homemade sign on a trailer was parked right at the front of the lot. Supporters at several locations were passing out literature. Trey had a small group there and they all sat together but we were scattered throughout the crowd. Our organized 'Run Rand, RUN! chant sounded great and he was not heckled once during his speech.
Rand's not a career politician and he's not as slick as the others so he ran out of time but so did Conway.
Also Rand had someone hanging banners at several of the exits along the Western KY Parkway. I didn't see any signs for any other candidate until I got about 5 miles from Fancy Farm.
We grassroots supporters of the Drs. Paul are experienced at this ground campaign and we know what happened to Ron in 2007 and 2008 will be repeated this year. We on the ground are going to have to step up to do the hard work because the media will write him off. They already have after Trey reported his big money haul.
Those of us who are GOP Precinct Captains know this campaign is on our shoulders. Now that Rand's got some great literature, you are the ones who are going to have to get it into your local party's HQ's and when your local parties have booths at the various fairs and festivals coming up you have got to get Rand's literature on the table. Your local parties are not going to order his stuff. YOU WILL HAVE TO DO IT!. You do it by volunteering to work your county GOP's booth at the local festivals and fairs in your area and bring the material with you!
I know some of you are distraught but remember we have an advantage that Trey does not, a national grassroots Liberty movement to back Rand. Trey is popular in KY but as has been mentioned, the pool of Republicans is small and primary elections have low turnouts. You will have to go door to door EARLY and get the word out. You must target Independents and Liberty-leaning Democrats and get them to switch (even if it's just temporary) to Republican and then in May go around and pick people up to take them to the polls.
Stay tuned for a call out from me to all Republican Precinct captains in the state of Kentucky right here on DP!
The KY Grassroots are blessed to have you
I am so glad to hear someone who really has their finger on the pulse of what grassroots must do to win it. This is just more good fruit from Ron's run, it taught us how the system works and how to win it precinct by precinct. I hope you are some type of coordinator

My understanding of Ky. GOP politics is
that there are very few Republicans. There are so few people involved in GOP politics that pretty much anyone who is involved is a big player. This is the understanding I get from having family into GOP politics in Marshal Co.
If they're showing a vested interest in Trey, we aren't going to sway the current GOP-connecteds in W. Ky.
The GOP establishment in Ky. has the money, but they don't have the numbers and they don't have our energy. Did I mention they have money?
We have to focus on swaying new GOP primary voters.
I can quiz my family on what went on in Marshall Co. as I'm positive they were there, but I don't think we're going to find any difference between the counties.
New GOP primary voters. Say it with me. New GOP primary voters.
Defend Liberty!
That can and will change in a heartbeat
The country club Repubs in KY support Grayson because they think he's thier best horse to ride to win the general right now in that Karl Rove and Mitch McConnell have bundled funds via the wine and cheese KYGOP crowd to pump this guy up. He has nowhere to go but down.

You're right
Western Kentucky is the least Republican part of the state, although they may be the most conservative voters in the state. Republicans can do well there.
I wonder what the NRA thinks of Trey Grayson, Harvard graduate. An endorsement by the NRA would do wonders for Rand. Kentucky is armed to the teeth.
I hope Rand concentrates on the 5th district which is Republican (Southeast Ky.).Second Amendment arguments work well there. It's relatively poor, rural, and armed.
Republican Kentucky politics
I went to school in Kentucky in the sixties.(Transylvania College). Kentucky is a border state that never seceeded and was roughly evenly split in its sympathies, but a referendum would probably have produced a slim majority for secession. Eastern Kentucky was the heavily pro-Union section of the state and remains today most staunchly Republican. Western Kentucky is conservative but remains heavily Democratic and unless they are willing to change their long-standing party registrations cannot vote for Rand.
In Rand's favor is a strong anti-interventionist sentiment. Remember the Cooper-Church amendment from the sixties. John Sherman Cooper was a Reppublican senator. The chairman of the Republican National Committee at that time was also from Kentucky and strongly opposed to the war in Vietnam. That was Thruston Morton and he was also a senator from Kentucky. If we are still bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2010 and obviously losing both of them, this could help Rand tremendously.
I don't like to be pessimistic but if the Kentucky Establishment Republicans have made their coice in all likelihood he cannot be stopped. This is because of the small Republican registration and primary turnout. Heaviest efforts should be concentrated on getting people to change their reistration and vote for Rand in the primary. I admit this will not be an easy task.
No one should ever forget how shabally Beck treated Dr. Paul during the Presidential campaign or the conscienceless shillin he did for his fellow Mormon, Romney. As for Murdock, he was relentless in having Hannity O'Reilly constantly savage Dr. Paul so th
There's no way the NRA would ever back Rand Paul...
....The NRA NEVER backs true believers in the second ammendment unless they're establishment people. Maybe the GOA?
We all know Rand is solid on the Second Amendment..
but Attorney general Jack Conway last year signed on with 30 other AG's to the Texas AG's pro-Heller Amicus brief to the US Supreme Court. This year he's signed on with the same AG's in the Second Amendment/14th amendment Incorporation case. He's as Liberal as they come but those two briefs are what he will use to lobby hard for the NRA's endorsement.
Fortunately the grassroots Second Amendment activists in KY are behind Rand. He was the only one to go to Knob Creek for the big Machine Gun Shoot in April.
Rand will need the NRA's endorsement in this race and it's going to take Rand's supporters who are NRA members to step up and contact Chris Cox, the NRA-ILA Director to educate him. And if Rand's not a member of the NRA then I'm stepping up and buying him a membership pronto!
lol @ the guy who said Ron

Why voting is hopeless
This account just confirms what developmental psychologist, Piaget, discovered many years ago - that the majority of people never develop sufficiently to think in conceptual terms. They do not think abstractly. Thye do not follow chains of conceptual reason. Thus they will never, for example, pay attention to, much less understand, the insights of Austrian economics, which does require reasoning from first principles using abstract concepts prior to reaching a logical and necessary conclusion.
Instead, the politico-economic understanding (if you can call it that) of the majority of citizens are limited to grasping slogans with surface level appeal, i.e., minimum wages will help the poor, drugs hurt people so must be illegal, etc. Not being able to focus on anything beyond perceptual reality - trucks, football, TV sitcoms, hair styles etc. they will not care about the principles of liberty beyond what they were told in grade school - that America is the land of the free, that the US invasions are actually trying to help the unappreciative downtrodden of the world by bringing them democracy, that Muslims hate the US for its freedom, etc.
Maybe after the statists have brought about a complete societal collapse a freedom movement that succeeds can arise from the ashes after the people have lost faith in the political myths they were raised on. Or maybe freedom lovers can create floating cities on the oceans and hope they aren't nuked by the collectivist governments that would hate them. I honestly don't have confidence that I know a better way for liberty lovers. But after spending the last 40 years pushing the freedom message and seeing only marginal successes against an ever swelling tide of oppressive government crushing liberty I have no hope for the US. Maybe some of the Asian or Eastern European countries where the memory of totalitarianism and government failure is still fresh in the minds of the people will pick up the torch of liberty.

The Salesmen needs to make
the sale with words the buyer can understand. If we can't explain it in a couple of sentences, the fault is ours.
Slogans are great as long as they're true. The first time you mention Austrian economics, they tune you out.
Trey is helping to lead a state that is in debt 1.1B
Trey is helping to lead a poor state that is in the hole for 1.1 billion in 2010. He shares the blame for that since he works so closely with the establishment that did this to KY.
As we go along, don't count out the economy as a way to discredit this sort of establishment type person, especially since the only people that predicted our economic situation, were those on Rand's side. There is an argument to be made for a non career politician that runs his own business - especially if you are a Republican.
Don't get too down about things, Trey should be scared too. I wouldn't want to go up against Rand Paul this year, you never know about the economy, or whatever else may bite you.
The economy will bite this
The economy will bite this year.
Rand should do his best to pin the misery on Trey.
'Always be yourself. Everyone else is taken.' - Oscar Wilde
Kentucky Politics
Why would Trey Grayson want to talk about issues? He is the establishment choice. The last thing he wants to do is get on the wrong side of an issue.
Trey and the GOP women are part of the same club, Rand is an interloper. The mass of voters aren't paying attention this early.
But no matter, the establishment votes only matter if the turnout is small. We should remember, though, that they count the votes.
The two "Rand supporters",if they were, pointing out the difference between democracy and constitutional republic probably raised eyebrows. I'm sure practically everyone in the room thought they were nutty, and will probably transfer that opinion to Rand Paul.
Kentucky politics is not about ideology. What a senseless question.
Party registration is heavily Democratic, but Mitch McConnell became senator by the use of a humorous TV ad.
His opponent had a spotty Senate attendence record, missing a large number of votes. The ad showed a man with a bloodhound trying to find the missing Democrat, even looking in Puerto Rico. There was a series of these humorous ads. When he lost the Democrat blamed it on the ads.
PS Trey's grandpa may get to vote for him. There are places in Kentucky where being dead is no excuse for not voting
