his own house led to a justified investigation.
If I was shouldering my way into my own house, trying more than one door, I wouldn't be surprised if some cops came to investigate. (Wait, maybe I would, but it would be pleasantly surprised that anyone was watching out for my house at all.)
However, once Gates had proven he belonged there, the investigation was over. Yeah, he was being a jerk and calling the cop racist. It was his property and he could be a jerk if he wanted to.
He was arrested because of a cop's ego. Would my ego have been hurt in the same circumstances? Probably. Does that give me the right to arrest someone? No.

policeman and told there were TWO people wouldn't you be a little concerned where the other person was? I have heard of stories where bad guys kidnap people and force them to drive to their homes and then proceed to rob them and do bad things. If you were a good cop it would seem logical to want to know where that other person went. The whole incident is unfortunate and I really don't blame either gentleman in this because this tension has been encouraged and promoted by those who wish to divide us.

It had been previously reported, and which Sgt. Crowley confirmed, that Gates was repeatedly yelling inflammatory racial remarks at Crowley. Crowley kept asking him to calm down, but to no avail. Gates was the egotistical one - "Do you know who I am?!" He was arrested for disorderly conduct, which was appropriate.

Disorderly Conduct in your own house???
How much power do you want the police to have? True, gates was being an ass, but being an ass in your own house is NOT arrestable.
In reality, Gates didnt even have to show his I.D., because it was his house...I know it seems like every burglar could simply say "this is my house" and be left to rob it, but there is no constitutional requirement to carry an I.D.
I understand why people side with Crowley, however these cops can not go around arresting people because they get upset.
What would stop the police from coming to your house and arresting you for disorderly conduct next time you raise your voice?
ALL officers have a DUTY, to turn off their emotions while at work...the same as a customer service agent has to deal with every jerk that calls up complaining, or a nymphomaniac who works at a sex shop, these cops DUTY is to know law.

haa...I feel that most cops really enjoy power, which is why they become cops...so I used the analogy of a nympho working in a sex shop as to imply that even though they may want to do something, they must restrain themselves at work...

what he has to say because if he had information that there were two people breaking in he had to be suspicious, I would. Like in the movies where the bad guy is hiding behind the door ready to kill the owner unless he gets rid of the cop. I don't think this is a matter of who is right or wrong it was what each man was thinking and how they couldn't connect to settle the issue. We see that a lot here, flame wars where I don't think people even read and think before they respond. I can only imagine how hard it must be for any profession where you deal with the public.

Welcome to "Equal Black Rights", and if you don't like it, the wisdom of a "Wise Latina Women" will tell you who has the last word, not to mention the President taking sides. Some apology - "Should of calibrated my words better". Do they really believe all us crackers are that f-ing stupid because we gave them the keys to the White House and Supreme Court ? I smell discrimination, and Crowley is tasting it. If it smells like racism, and taste like racism, it's racism.
He had just returned from a trip and had difficult getting into his house. A neighbor called the cops. (Or someone who happened to see Gates struggling with his front door). Apparently someone was helping Gates to get it, and when he got inside Sgt. Crowley turned up, responding the complaint.
Gates, apparently has quite an ego and gave Crowley an earful, as in, "Don't you know who I am?" And then the racist stuff.
Watch Video 3. That pretty much explains it all.
That Gates wants an apology attests to his grandstanding and ego. He should be ashamed of himself.

but the whole thing looks orchestrated to me. Someone calls the cops on a harvard professor who is also Obama's friend on the word of another unknown person. Sounds like a scam to bring up the race issue and divide people as Obama's support shrinks.

Was it ridiculous that Gates was calling it racism? Maybe! But he didn't do anything wrong! If an officer comes in to my house or a house where I'm invited and asks me questions I would say its none of his business too. Thats not against the law! Gates wasn't infringing on anyones rights but Crowley was. Typical cop. Disorderly conduct, what a damn joke.
Rumor is...Gates was working on a book that dealt with racial matters.
You would think a well-educated person would understand that it would be far easier to show ID then to start yelling racism the moment being questioned. My other question is...doesn't his neighbors know who he is? I thought this call about a break-in came from one of his neighbors.
