It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society: US antidepressant use doubles
This morning Reuters reports that antidepressant use in the US more than doubled between 1996 and 2005, from 13 to 27 million Americans. That amounts to about 20% of the US workforce. Researchers speculate that one reason for the increase in legal drug use is that Americans more readily "accept diagnosis of depression."
Hmmm....I wonder why that would be? Oh, here it is, right in the article:
Although there was little change in total promotional spending for antidepressants between 1999 ($0.98 billion) and 2005 ($1.02 billion), there was a marked increase in the percentage of this spending that was devoted to direct-to consumer advertising, from 3.3 percent ($32 million) to 12 percent ($122.00 million),
Advertising. Hey you -- feeling a little blue? Can't seem to make ends meet? Paycheck shrinking while the price of everything is going up? Does it seem like society crumbling before your very eyes? Don't worry! Be happy. The corporate drug pushers have just the thing for you to forget all your worries and get back to work as a productive member of society.
More than 164 million prescriptions were written in 2008 for antidepressants, totaling $9.6 billion in U.S. sales, according to IMS Health.
As a matter of fact, if you can't find a job, there may be one waiting for you in pharmaceutical sales. This is big business, and one with ever growing needs:
"Not only are more U.S. residents being treated with antidepressants, but also those who are being treated are receiving more antidepressant prescriptions," they added.

I recently made a new friend - a 23 year old kid from one of the best West Coast schools (Stanford) - who's been on antidepressants & anti anxiety medication since his freshman year of high school. He's out here in Boston doing a summer internship at a non-profit. He desperately wants to get off the drugs, but he is surprisingly candid about his hopelessness.
"I don't think I ever would have finished college without the drugs," he told me. "College seems like such a waste of time. Most people there don't care about anything but graduating." Now, faced with the prospect of entering the workforce, he's equally uninspired. On paper, he looks great - good school, good grades, good internship at a prestigious non-profit. Inside he's struggling with the decision of whether to continue being "a productive member of society," in the eyes of his friends, family & former teachers. To him it is a path that is empty and meaningless. There is the pressure to get a "good" job that offers "insurance" - both "security" and health insurance, so he can continue with his medication.
The sad part about the drugs is that they don't really work, and scientists don't really know what the long term consequences might be. What they allow is for patients to make it through another day as a productive member of society.
If this many of our citizens (20% of the workforce) needs drugs to be "well adjusted," something is profoundly wrong with our society, and its getting worse.
Anyone else here know people who are addicted to antidepressants, or trying to get off them?
p.s. - thanks to DP user krusty, for letting me borrow your Krishnamurti signature line for the title.

This is extremely disturbing.
I used to buy into that advertising. I gave antidepressants a try hoping they would "fix" my depression. They numbed me to the point where I couldn't feel ANY emotion. I no longer felt depression, but I no longer had a chance of feeling any positive emotion either. It killed any motivation I had to improve my life, and it reached the point where I couldn't leave the bed. It was awful and I didn't feel human.
What made me feel better was going off the medication and adjusting my attitude and lifestyle. Instead of going back to my dull, uninspiring, and frustrating office job, I started my own business. It was a tough, risky decision, but working for myself and going outside of the standard 9-5 life made me feel a million times better. I'm not knocking people who choose that path nor am I claiming that self-employment will cure your problems. All I'm saying is that doing what I truly wanted instead of what society and family expected me to do was what truly helped me in the end.
THE BIGGEST MISTAKE I EVER MADE WAS BELIEVING THAT A PILL COULD FIX MY PROBLEMS. Extra emphasis added because I hope that someone will read this and think twice before ever seriously believing that medication is the answer to everything.
I was so saddened and disturbed when I read that article, and was left with similar conclusions. I won't bother asking "how did we reach this point?", because I already know the answer. The government and big business know damn well what these drugs do--they force us to be unmotivated worker drones. When you're numb to the point where you can't feel anger, when you're unable to question the status quo or even have a critical thought, then you're not much of a threat.

Everyone knows that molds
Everyone knows that molds can be toxic to humans. But, I was unaware of just how toxic they can be and how sensitive a large portion of us can be to toxic mold. Look into the books called Mold Warriors by Ritchie C Shoemaker and Your Guide To Mold Toxins by Rosen and Schaller. Many people are misdiagnosed with depression, arthritis, parkinson's, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, IBS, celiac's, migraines, MS, etc. The true cause in many cases is a biotoxic overload caused by molds, algaes, and other biotoxin producing agents. Twenty five percent of humans have a genetic predisposition to not be able to clear biotoxins from the body according to the HLA DR marker. People with this gene type do not clear the toxins via the immune system like the other 75%. The toxins continue to accumulate until one of the mysterious diseases sets in and they feel horrible 24/7. All kinds of interesting things cascade out of the biotoxin overload. Endocrine system disruptions, brain disruptions, central nervous system disorder, auto immune system crossfires, digestive changes, and michondria alterations. These doctors have been working on methods to clear the toxic overloads and have found relatively easy paths for the majority of the 25% group. There are some specifics and nuances that still perplex them, but they report amazing success over the past decade. Diagnosis is as simple as taking a preliminary written test, a visual contrast test, and a blood draw to determine if you have the gene type. https://www.chronicneurot... This website offers the first two tests for $15 if you think it applies to you or your family.

Ever seen the movie?
True healthcare reform...
Means teaching people how to take care of themselves. Sorry, big pharma, there is no profit in this, and it is the ethical choice that must be made for the better of our species. The massive pawning off of health problems by consumers onto a drug or surgery just shows how addicted our culture is to not understanding our bodies' wisdom. The golden nugget in the healthcare crisis is that the upcoming outrageous cost of medicine will force people to relearn how to take care of themselves since they won't have the money or insurance coverage to buy every little drug or procedure they want to "fix" themselves. 100 years from now, we will look back on this time and see how we have treated ourselves like barbarians in relation to medecine.
drugs
I admit to smoking bud on a daily basis...otherwise my kids might drive me insane (I'm a stay-at-home mom), and somehow it keeps me from getting bored. Dunno if it's good or bad, but I enjoy it.
It's all about keeping you a happy slave for the IBC
"There can be only one permanent revolution - a moral one: The regeneration of the inner man."
—Tolstoy
"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."
Thank God
I never took any types of those drugs. My mother tired to get me put on them but I refused most adamantly. My mind is mine. No drugs. No illegal nor legal drugs. I remained clean. A feat very rare in this day and age.
As for our society. The more sick in the head you are the more sucessful you become. Wifes,Children,And mentaly adjusted.
Heres a case for you. A man has a wife they have six, thats 6,children. Boths parents have no job. 3 of their kids are in the foster system. 3 live with them. They live in section 8. No income other than government assistance. They get their pills at a discount for being jobless. They think they are the most successful people they know. They talk down to everyone and act as if they are living in the lap of luxury.
I fear these pills make it so that you can be clinging to the bottom rungs of society and feel as if you are on the top of the mountain. Depression I feel is healthy. For without it what would be the motivation to better your life?
Totally ridiculous

You're right, Michael
The US is one of the only countries where pharmaceutical companies are allowed to market directly to consumers. Thus, according to Charles Barber, author of the book Comfortably Numb: How Psychiatry is Medicating a Nation, 66 percent of the global antidepressant market is accounted for by the United States.
These drugs are getting into the water supply. These drugs make people more apathetic. Makes you wonder what this is tending towards.
I hope your young friend finds a better path.

Reading the Daily Paul........
is my anti-depressant! Just knowing there are a lot of people out there who have pulled their heads out of their asses.
it's a sad fact
we are surrounded by horribly depressing occurrences on a daily basis. Taking a pill merely treats the symptom, not the cause. (Standard operating procedure for most of todays doctors)
I know many people who take anti-depressants, I am a recovered alcoholic and am active in a recovery group called "Lifering" where I meet people who are convinced that there is something wrong with them because they are not always happy. I tell them the Krishnamurti quote and assure them its normal to feel sad sometimes.

This may be my favorite of all quotes! And I first read it here, from you. Thanks!
The power of a signature line
Thanks krusty - it is a great quote. Your quote led to to Krishnamurti's book Think on These Things. I was in a bookstore one day and I saw it, remembered your quote, picked it up, read some and bought it.
It is a great book. People do need to realize that there is something very, very sick about this society.
Congratulations on your recovery.
Michael
thanks for the congrats,
The K quote is very apt, I think. I haven't read the book, might have to go get it now.

Yes, get it! It is a great collection of his writings and speeches on a variety of topics.
Incredible!!
I just noticed the problem a few weeks ago while visiting the doctor's office. I had an appointment for purely financial reasons (extracting my money from my IRA) and I was given a questionare. The two page test had the 'Ely Lily' name at the bottom.
The first leading set of questions were impossible to answer no to. An example is:
Have you ever felt better than usual?
Have you ever hollered at anyone?
Do you sometimes feel happier than usual?
Anyhow, I must have flunked.
The second page went something like this:
Is morning your favorite time of the day?
Do you like feeling attractive and looking at attractive people?
Is your life less full than usual?
I must've failed this as well.
The doctor told me I needed Cymbalta and some form of valium!!!
I was really laughing which made matters worse. Upon my arrival of this very same visit I had told my Doctor that I appreciated him because he had never told me that I needed antidepressants. He is such a smart guy but this Big Pharma drug abuse scam has been forced on the greatest of minds.
I guess they don't call it a depression for nothing.

Lonely vs. Depressed
I saw a new book the other day in the bookstore called: The Lonely American: Drifting Apart in the Twenty-first Century
It points out how acceptable it is in our society to say, "I'm depressed," whereas saying "I'm lonely" is completely pathetic and unacceptable. The reason? There is a treatment for depression - just take a pill.
Loneliness is another matter, and it is really what people mean when they say, "I'm depressed." The book cited a terrible statistic - I forget exactly, but it was something like 50% of Americans don't have a single friend that that they could talk to about meaningful things - or something to that effect. I'll have to go look at it again.
It talks about the "Cult of Busyness"
Great book with great insights.
