Anyone else reading Atlas Shrugged?

I am listening to the book on tape and am on CD 38 of 45(!!!). While I think that the economic collapse discussed in the book is VERY timely and comparable to our current crisis, I would not reccomend the book to others. Stylistically, the book is obviously far too long and overly descriptive. The length adds a lot to the "propaganda factor" of the book and is off-putting. The story plods. The characters are wooden and there is no redemption in sight(yet). The dialogue is preachy. I find the Objectivist philosophy as portrayed in the book to be vulgar, simplistic, and full of holes. However, I found the politics and economics of the book to be very well exposited within the story.

great sex scenes!
honestly it was the great sexual tension and release that kept me going with this book, otherwise the wordiness might have overwhelmed me.
When the book came out 52 years ago, I imagine that....
much was said about those scenes. Dagny is impressing me in this day and age. That is for sure.
The activity that is a big downer for me is all of the smoking, so unhealthy.
However, the central theme has universal applications.
Bmore: yes, my summer reading project, 30 years overdue.
I'm on p. 660. The world is crumbling, but Dagny just made contact with the tramp who worked for the 20th Century Motor Company.
It is all so exciting, and it's hard to put down.
I enjoyed it
very much. Francisco was my favorite character. I really liked his speech about money and production. This book made me think more than any other. I'm debating whether or not to get Fountainhead. I agree with some that it's drawn out but it will get people to think about things they normally don't.
I Have Been Looking…
…for a used copy at my neighborhood bookstore, but the clerk said as soon as she gets one in, someone buys it, which is a good sign.
Right now I’m reading “All the Shah’s Men” by Stephen Kinser, “The Secrets of the Federal Reserve” by Eustace Mullins, and “The Starfish and the Spider” by Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom.

Seriously?....
"characters are wooden"? Maybe you should be reading the book then instead of listening to it being read to you...my heart will forever belong to Dagny Taggart...
Why not recommend it?.....we need more women in the movement - the love stories in the book help bring them here.....I'm not sure I'd still be married if my wife hadn't read it.....and the lengh of the book can't be that "off-putting" I've read it 3 times and have probably bought it 5 more to give as gifts.....6.2 million copies had been sold by the US publishers as of 2007, with recent sales averaging over 130,000 copies per year....only this year that will be at least doubled...

Her intent was for it to be
Her intent was for it to be "too idealistic". She is trying to romanticize the human race, in order to show how man can and should be...
The characters are supposed to appear as heroic based on the Objectivitist philosophy...
...but I am in the middle of "The Fountainhead" :), and I am enjoying it.
I have read it three times.
It is scary to see so many of the things from Atlas Shrugged coming true in Amerika.

both my daughter and i are
both my daughter and i are reading it and we are absolutely loving every page of it. i am a little over half way through it and she only has a tiny bit left which she considers bittersweet due to her ties to the characters and overall enjoyment of the content. i don't remember a book i have read that i liked more than this one. both of us are astounded by how much it feels like it was written last week.
book on IPOD while i work on
book on IPOD while i work on my house, great stuff so far, scarry parrells to the current administration and thoughts of (seemingly) many people in society .

one man's opinion...
you are entitled to your opinion and you know what they say about opinions? as in, everybody's got one of those, too!
as for me, i'll go with the president of the ayn rand institute who reports that the book sales of atlas shrugged were greater last year than any year in the history of the book and this year outsold last year by the month of may and this year it (atlas shrugged) is projected to sell 250,000 copies!
apparently, you are in the minority, sir...still, you do have a right to your opinion!
...thank you for sharing...perhaps you should read it twice to better understand the nuances of the book...or, perhaps you might like to go back to american idol or america's got talent...

Too idealistic
I found "The fountainhead" more interesting. Although, it was idealistic too.
the fountainhead is a spectacular book!
just my opinion...but i found it to be one that i could not put down until i had it finished and was sad to reach the last page...
idealistic? what's wrong with that?
