Update: Just got the following email:

Rand Paul, Bowling Green Eye Surgeon and son of former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, today announces he is officially in the race for the US Senate representing Kentucky. Dr. Paul will now transition his exploratory committee to a full election committee.

Dr. Paul has been respectful of incumbent Senator Bunning's courage in opposing the bank bailout. Dr. Paul waited for Senator Bunning's difficult decision not to run for re-election before entering the race.

"I think the main thing that motivates me to run for office is the debt fueled by Washington's out of control spending. I think we're drowning in a sea of debt, as a country. The deficit this year will be 13% of the GNP. This is a historic high. The danger is going to be inflation within a year or two, and prices may rise rapidly."

Dr. Paul's commitment to fiscal responsibility is nothing new. For the past fifteen years, Dr. Paul has been the chairman of the Kentucky Taxpayers United, a group that monitors and rates the State Legislature on spending issues.

Rand Paul's entry into this race will nationalize the Kentucky US Senate campaign. This can be witnessed by his television and radio appearances scheduled in New York City on August 6th and 7th -- finally giving hope of representation to liberty-minded and fiscally conservative Kentuckians.

Rand Paul's official campaign website is www.randpaul2010.com.

Rand Paul wants to "throttle a few people and then come home"

Rand Paul wants to "throttle a few people and then come home"

Joe Arnold

In a sit-down interview with WBKO-TV in Bowling Green, Dr. Rand Paul says the ability to raise the necessary campaign funds is a qualification for a U.S. Senate run, and he says he can do it, repeating his campaign's hope to raise $1 million in one day later this month.

He also discloses that he probably would have run even if Jim Bunning had not retired. But he admits that he waited as long as he could so as not to alienate Bunning's supporters. He says he would have announced his candidacy on August 5th, regardless.

Paul rails against the legislative process, blind partisanship and career politicians. He says "Cash for Clunkers" makes no sense and he is "absolutely opposed" to President Obama's health care plan.

Paul warns that, because of the stimulus response to the recession, rampant inflation is just around the corner, "Wait until you see milk at $8 a gallon."

On the primary contest vs. Sec. of State Trey Grayson: "I think he'll be a challenge." Paul says Grayson is "harder to pigeonhole" because he's in a non-partisan positon.
"A large percentage of the time, he's been out shaking hands to run for the next office."

"He really wants to stay in government and he will do, I think, what it takes But I don't think he has the fire in his belly that I have to change things. I don't really care to go up there forever. I want to go up there and throttle a few people and then come home."

Paul says GOP candidate Bill Johnson can't raise the money to have a chance.

Assuming Rand's position on war is similar

to the Ron Paul position, he's likely to get hit with the charge of not supporting the troops. I suspect all the others are pro-war.
Maybe Rand should confront the issue directly by speaking near Ft. Campbell (Home of the 101st Airborne). If you have to defend it, better to wear it. A friendly crowd there would dispel the "not supporting the troops" charge.

Militant anti-peace, anti-liberty folks like that

are the ones who killed the GOP and teamed up with the Dems, unknowingly, to put some KO blows to this country.

Some folks on there have sense, but some are just warmongering neo-con crazies.

Don't generally attend rallys and stuff, but now they will. Things are going get very ugly very soon.

Comment!

Rand spoke quite well in this interview, but.....

Rand's comments and answers were well on point. Very good buzz words.

Rand uses his hands in a way that distracts a person though. He may want to use less hand speak, and when he does use it, he may want to slow the hand and arm movements down, using the arm and the hand to drive home a point without pointing fingers, i.e., loose fist, thumb up touching the index finger. This type of hand speak is non-invasive and gives an appearance of strength.

Rand may also want to loosely squint his eyes while driving home his points.

This critique comes from a supporter. Rand needs votes from people who are not in the freedom movement....so called main stream conservative voters.

Looking like a senator will play a big role in this next election. Sorry for the cliche'. Rand desperately needs GRAVITAS.

For Father and Son

Does anyone know how to make out the check to Rand

now that he's actually declared he's a candidate?

I was going to mail a check to Rand Paul for U.S. Senate Exploratory Committee, but I'm guessing that will be changed. Any answers?

I was going to mail it to: 1332 Andrea Street Bowling Green, KY 42104

My guess

is that the Exploratory Committee's funds will easily roll over into the official campaign.

Defend Liberty!

Thanks, that's how I'll make out the check!

Two Dr. Pauls in Congress would be great! One in the House - one in the Senate!

"Ron Paul likes to be the thorn in the side of EVERYBODY!"

If the shoe fits...ware it. How many political hypocrites are there?
Go Ron Paul! And now: Go Rand Paul!

I think Cavuto meant Ron Paul is a thorn in the side of the ones he is constantly having to buck in Congress.

Nice to know your perspective Cavuto!

People will remember it.

Ron Paul's Convention Speech

Wow

Hearing Rand announce his candidacy gave me such a sense of hope and pride. Maybe we'll up our planned contribution on the Aug. 20 money bomb!

This guy is an extremely quick learner ...

I have watched him over the past few years on KET (PBS affiliate for KY) and he has learned things faster than anyone I have ever seen.

Not only does he have his father's principles, honesty, and integrety, this gentleman has grav - i - tas.

It is nothing short of destiny.

I rarely mix mysticism with reality, but this person ...

this gentle person ...

this man ...

impresses me quite a bit.

Rand seems to be more

Rand seems to be more personable. (This is not to dismiss his hugely successful father, just to point out an added benefit of the son.)

"Your father's kind of a rebel"!!!!

I loved that line. Rand did a great job... it IS a shame Cavuto interrupts too much.

Yes, money

We have to win this!

I'm more excited than ever after watching this excellent interview.

Wow, Rand talked

Wow, Rand talked substantially, very clear and with a good flow. The interruptions by Cavuto were handled very well!

Go Rand Paul!!

Cavuto

is an f'ing ahole...keeps cutting Rand off
