It makes absolutely no sense to pile on spending programs when we already have massive deficits, a skyrocketing national debt, and are experiencing a fierce recession.

This analogy explains it all.

I own a store in a mall. I'm not doing so good. I get the great idea to go out into the mall and hand out my own money from the cash register and tell people they can only use it in my store.

Business picks up. People start coming into my store and buying my items. The money is coming in. Business is good. At the end of the day I calculate how much money I made. Looks like I'm still not looking so good. Even though it appeared that business was booming. No monetary gains were made.

The cash for clunkers is a ponzi scheme set up via the banks to move people into loans. People with vehicles and no debt or vehicles with debt.
Being awake and watching these events unfold is entertaining.

What's it matter? It's all a big scam anyway

There's no money. The common folk haven't beenm afforded the ability to make or spend money in many decades. Why not blow another couple billion notes? They're just notes.
I say print them till the cows come home. Who cares? My goal is to see FRNs go the way of the dinosaurs. I couldn't care less how many they print or who owes who any.

and are pretty much depending on the issuers to make good on them notes, should that become necessary. Of course those pesky folks with guns calling themselves a citizen's militia might get in the way, so they will have to be dealt with first.
