Can an individual demand and secure their medical records?

Is it possible to go to your birth hospital and private practitioner and ask for all copies of your health records before they are stolen by government? If this is possible, perhaps we could keep those records out of government hands. If B.O. does not have to present his BC, then how can the American people be expected to turn over their medical records to the government? Any input on this?

You may have to pay for them too . . .
I am trying to get SSDI because I have MS. SS requires you to go to their Dr. for an alternate opinion. As is my regular habit, I ask for a copy of the notes for the visit when I leave. He told me I could not have them since I wasn't paying for my visit, SS was. I would need to petition them for the records from his office. Apparently, whomever pays for the Drs service owns the records, regardless of whether they are talking about you.
Also, before I moved recently, I went to all of my Drs to get my records. All but one of them asked for money. They will, however, gladly send them to your new Dr,. or any Gov't agency that wants them, for free.
So regardless of whether you pick them up or not, or whether they have your permission or not, they are going to do whatever they'd like with them, including putting them online.

Oh, lucky me!
We had a doctor who was also into nutritional healing, and she was not connected to any other doctors or hospitals. All of our family's records were written by her, by hand, and kept until her death, and then mailed to us by her children. There were no copies.
Also, my first two children went to public school for a little while, and I joined a satellite christian school, libertarian, and they got the original records, and so when I left them to homeschool without a school, they sent all of the original records. The last four children have never had any records, with the exception of a couple broken legs. ARGH, we did get them social security numbers, however, despite the fact they were home delivered via midwives.
You have a right to all of your medical records if you so desire
though they may just be copies.

Your medical records....
are your property and you are entitled to them. You may run into problems regarding the length of time they are required to maintain the records. I don't think you can permanently remove your records from their hands.
