Health Care - a simple, proposal (100% un-PC)

As some who worked in the trenches of health care for a decade there's one overriding factor that has sent cost skyrocketing - obesity.

So, with that in mind index health care premiums by percentage of body fat.

I thought you were going to say something interesting.

Like "what if we just pay for our own healthcare, instead of hiring some firm to represent me to the doctors and make the deals with them..."

You are offering to VARY the content of the COLLECTIVE BARGAINING, you sound like a frigging insurance company man.

I am a doctor. The problem is the FAILURE of the MARKETPLACE because people hire THIRD PARTY payers to do this.

How about; you take your risks, pay for your healthcare, and it is all private?

too radical?

well said...

And health care is not nearly as expensive as people think it is. And once we get the insurance companies out of the mix it would fall dramatically.

The problem is the government subsidies which make health insurance attractive (my accountant just told me to get insurance and stop paying directly because of the write offs).

The problem can always be traced back to government hand outs or intervention.

We need a reboot,

In a true free market the cost would be assessed based on the personal risk involved. Even a person who is on their death bed would be able to get insurance if they could afford to compensate the insurer for the risk that they are taking on. In this way the market does the rationing rather than the government, which gives us the ability to get the most service for the best prices while using the least resources. It would be the most compassionate system available and would help the most people possible. Ultimately the government would again subsidize those who incurred the higher costs as they would form groups and demand what would be welfare for the fat, we would have to derail the subsidies right at the IRS or the Federal Reserve or collectivism would again take over.

response to health care proposal

That could be a plausible idea if people were given easy access to fresh and organic food and not all the chemical garbage provided by Monsanto and other big food corporations. But with the eugenics plan in full swing they don't want people to eat healthy and use natural methods for health. Then of course there are all the drugs that are prescribed, many of which include the side effect of weight gain. My husband's doctor is very unhappy that he has gone off his diabetic medicine and is going to use diet and excercise to control is blood sugar. It took me fourteen years and several hospital trips to convince him that they were just trying to kill him. He has now lost over 40 pounds in the last 4 months. So you have to provide obese people with healthy alternatives that are easily accessible and keep the FDA, USDA, etc., out of natural healing alternatives..

chinkadaro

i'm overweight

and think your suggestion is just fine. Its a common-sense approach to risk assessment. Concerning those with medical conditions that cause obesity, why should a for-profit corporation have to provide you with a service that will result in a loss for them? Perhaps this is where neighborhood health collectives could step up?

I think they already

do that. Overweight people do get charged more for health insurance premiums. It's all factored in.

In every other industry

In every other industry costs are reduced as the technology improves. Why is it that the health care industry is unable to do the same? Health care costs always increase regardless of any improvements to the science and technology of health care.

Aside from that aspect, I do agree that obesity does lead to more health related issues and additional expense. Your idea does seem to be a reasonable one.

...

Hey wait a minute

Im fat..not by choice....by illness...and you want me to pay more for something I cant help? OMG please....I eat very little junk food...I loves fresh fruits over candy anyday..I already have to pay a 'fat tax' my cloths cost more.

Freedom is another way to God...A corrupt government is a straight way to hell.

I believe in Hope & Change..I Hope the government will Change
Spindale-Rutherford County-North Carolina

Your clothes have more material and take more time to produce...

Therefore the cost is greater. That is not a "fat" tax.

First, discussing ways to make theft more "fair" is a waste of time so I find this whole thread absurd.

What illness exactly causes you to be fat? There is no illness that will cause you to put on more calories than you consume minus the ones that you use. It actually violates the laws of physics, let alone the biological absurdity of such a statement.

Thyroid problem? Well, yes, when you over consume it does throw your thyroid numbers off because you are causing spikes in your insulin levels and other hormones.

Yes, failure to exercise and be active does mean that your body shuts down certain aspects and modifies internal behavior.

And for the record, fruits are also a form of sugar.

I'm just gonna agree. I used

I'm just gonna agree.

I used to weigh 320lbs, I'm now hovering around 210lbs. I USED to have thyroid problems. That was my EXCUSE for being fat. That and playing football as an offensive lineman. Granted I am 6'6" tall, I feel great, look great, and I am better than I was even though I'm not as strong as I was.

I'm going to say quit blaming it on an "illness" for being overweight/fat. DO something about it. Get off your butt and go outside and fast walk. Lift weights and build some muscle. Even if you don't lose weight, you'll lose fat. Don't look at the scales while doing this, instead measure your BF%.

This doesn't need to be said but EAT HEALTHY. For women, if you're counting calories, try not to take in any more than 1800-2000 a day. For guys, 2000-2200. You should be losing about 1-2 lbs per week. That is a healthy rate.

DO NOT, I cannot stress this enough, DO NOT TAKE PILLS!!! They will f-up your metabolism. I know from experience. It took me about 1.5 years for my metabolism to get back on track after I took the last one. I tried them all, they DO NOT WORK.

I have no sympathy for people who continue to blame their being obese on some "illness". I've already been there and I've gotten past it.

Well done.

I know that couldn't have been an easy change in your perception of yourself and the world around you and you should be commended for making that change.

All of your advice is dead on as well. Especially the strength training. That is the best way for men and women to stay in shape. Burning 10 calories on a treadmill doesn't cut it. But adding an ounce of muscle mass that burns calories all the time does.

Beef Industry, Hormones, and You

rBGH/Hormones

With little regard for the cows or the humans that eventually eat them, the beef industry pumps growth hormones into upwards of 80 percent of beef cattle raised in the U.S. each year. These hormones are intended to boost growth rates and increase body mass--think cows on steroids. Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not allow producers to treat chickens or pigs with hormones, the agency does permit the practice for cattle and sheep.

In addition to hormones used to increase milk production (see rBGH / rBST), there are six hormones approved for use in beef cattle. Two of these hormones, estradiol and zeranol, are likely to have negative human health effects, including cancer and impacts on child development, when their residues are present in meat. Concerns about these potential health impacts have left many scientists doubtful of the safety of hormone use in meat production.

So no apology?

Just going to assume all people who ear beef are fat and even then it is rhe cause of obesity. I know overwieght vegans and staore bought vegies make me sick i assume because of pesticides and herbicides. I will give you that our food sources may contribute to health problems ,but your opinions are predjudicice and unfounded. You are talking out of your hat. Should we penalize beef eaters ? By the way I'm not fat. I have been heavier ,lost 40 pounds eating mostly deli meat and alot of roast beef.
No mayo, butter or cheese did make a huge difference.

more 100% un-PC solutions

Now that I've po'ed a good portion of the readership with frank honesty I might as well sign my death warrant and launch off a salvo of untouchable solutions to unspeakable health care problems:

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

End the anchor baby immigration clause. Period.

Allow emergency care and immunizations, and that's it. No health care plans for people who shouldn't be here in the first place.

Affix a 10% tax on all Western Union money transfers directed out of the United States, submit the proceeds to local health districts.

Most importantly - insist the home countries of foreign nationals reimburse the USA for all health care, social service, and law enforcement cost incurred by their wayward residents. If they refuse to do so take them to civil court.

BIRTH CONTROL

Mandate counseling for all first-time mothers on public assistance concerning family planning. No assistance past the third birth. Legislate restrictions on fertility clinics, hold them fiscally responsible for the cost incurred by society by virtue of octomom on welfare patients.

FOOD INDUSTRY

Investigate the end-effects of introducing hormome-laced meat and dairy products into the food supply. End the importation of beef and pork products for the fast food industry, mandate clear country of origin labeling in the meat section.

I can only imagine the resistance such proposals would receive by my district's representative, Charlie Gonzales of San Antonio. It'll be the first case of a Congressman going unhinged at a constituent. What if they had a war, and no body came.

Well, that was us back in 1970, thinking if we refuse to work at the meat production and farming facilities, the corporates could not confiscate our farm lands and animals, and we could keep our small farmers in business.
But no. Unlimited migration of people whom had no knowlege of our stand against crimes to nature, took the jobs that built the fast food industry. 80% of all intensive industrial farming is produced for the fast food industry only.
We have sacraficed all human and environmental dignity for the hamburger and back room real estate deals.
Hitlery is in Africa, poised to poison their soils being in that the CIA (front for big pharma) is purchasing the resources, but instead of unlimited migration, "they" offer to "help" to prevent HIV/AIDS.
Back here in the US, they already conviscated our small farmers, but just forgot to help us avoid the swine flu. Gee, just can't wait for vaccine. (no)

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

First, thanks for being honest.

Hyper-PCness is my pet peeve

It's an interesting idea. Go on a diet, save money.
Hopefully you get weigh-in opportunities fairly often.

My guess is that it would be perceived as racist, or sexist. Unless there were adjustments made for those general body types.

I see lots of people screaming "unfair" for one reason or another.
I've always thought airlines should charge by weight too. They do for packages, why not people?

Sorry about your back..My wife is in a similar situation. Often sleeps in the recliner too.

You may get your wish if government gets control

you may even secure the delight of filling out a 1040FAT form along with your taxes. Who knows maybe even forced labor to work it off and pay the difference. An ankle bracelet house arrest and a human hampster wheel? Oh...what if it's genetic? Might have to tweak some genes here and there so your family will be allowed to continue to reproduce. Government control bring so many wonderful applications of force to us. At least it's a voluntary system right now....sort of.

I believe the Good Doctor

actually addressed this idea once in an interview

Sir thinks alot?

You worked in the health care industry? Scary.

Yes, as a paramedic. Had

Yes, as a paramedic. Had several cardiac arrest saves, never spent a day in court on a malpractice suit, never had a clinical review, gave it up after the third back injury.

Perhaps my point of view can be attributed to living with constant pain every day of my life. I sleep in a recliner. Thus I'm prejudiced.

Deal with it.

Maybe you needed

more weight on you and should have worked out more to strengthen the right muscles to prevent back injuries or used the proper lifting techniques. Maybe someone in your line of work should pay more for insurance.

Let me go ahead and tell ya

Let me go ahead and tell ya this, when you're lifting a patient that is 400+lbs and you're in a hurry to get that patient loaded up and to the hospital, unless you lift perfectly, you're gonna hurt something no matter how much you workout and strengthen the muscles.

The city where my father works already badly low balls their insurance, this being in one of the wealthiest cities per capita in the US. I have about the same level of insurance my father has. I'm a college student that pays about $130/mo for it. Teachers around here have better insurance than firefighters and police.

The first injury was

The first injury was sustained while attempting to move an obese woman in cardiac arrest from the bathtub to the bathroom floor in order to get a quick look with the EKG paddles. It seems she attempted to address the signs of myocardial infarction (anxiety, shortness of breath, perspiration) by taking a shower and coded while soapy and wet. The fire department hadn't arrived yet so my partner and I made the attempt to move. The other two back injuries were aggravations of the first.

As a former Recon Marine and Army Paratrooper (and fitness nut) my physical conditioning was just fine at the time. Strength conditioning remained part of my routine upon entering civilian life. I played hero instead of waiting for help, and thus paid the price. It's hard to ignore your sense of duty in these circumstances, much less screaming family members,,,,

Well it sounds good in theory

but theres like 6 people in America who ARENT overweight- and 2 of them are the Olsen Twins- and I think they have their own pharmacist.

I find

Your post offensive. There are actually medical conditions that cause obesity. Use your your head. Some people overeat and stay thin. Some people eat reasonably and are obese due to thyroid, pituitary, adrenal problems ect. My own mother had this and my daughter has poly cystic overy disease caused by a pituitary problem and is working very hard to lose weight with diet, exercise and hormone therapy. She does not ovulate and this started at puberty but was not diagnosed until she was 26 and wants to have a child. She gained wieght extremely fast when she hit puberty to the point of getting stretch marks and was and is always on her period. So she is overwieght because of this disease so let's charge her more for health care? What about anorexia? If they are too thin should they be discriminated against? Or they could be too thin and have health problems from an over active thyroid. Go learn something. You should not prejudge.

I think thats his point

His point is that overweight people tend to cost more money to try to keep healthy. I could def stand to lose a few lbs myself- but I can see his point. There is some truth to it without "blaming" people for being overweight. : )

It is called

medical practice for a reason. They are often wrong and make mistakes in diagnoses. if they had diagnosed my daughter when I first started taking her to the doctor and even asked them to do test for hormone imbalances she may have never gotten heavy and would not had that issue to deal with. I myself spent over five years with very seriuos dibilitating headaches and undescible odd feelings in my head. Even told the docters i felt like I was going to have a seizure and had the eyes rolled at me. Guess what? Finally they did an EEG ( again that I asked for) and found out I was on the verge of a seisure. Do you know how much time and money was wasted there? I also went through hell with my perionds and they could find nothing but luckily after 3 years I convinced my doctor to do a hysterectomy and they found my uterous was all tied up in my abdominal wall and while they were in there they found out why I had been having to live on prevacid for 3 years because of an inflamed stomach lining wich they blamed on diet. My intestines were adhered to my abdominal wall. Did I bring any of this on myself? Did they waste alot of time .money and alot of my quality of life ignoring my as a hypochondriac? Maybe we should pay doctors less that are so arrogant they right patients off and just throw expensive meds at them. And Dont' THINKALOT SIR If many in the medical proffesion thought more insteag of thinking and assuming so much and listened to their patients much wouuld be saved. So you can see why I feel like I do about this subject. One could assume your back problems were not caused by overwieght patints or even all in your head.

There is also the issue of

There is also the issue of wanton usage of growth hormones by factory farm industry to consider. These hormones don't disappear on slaughter day. Conceivably what makes a cow grow to grotesque proportions in record time also performs the same effect on the human end-user. Someone ought to look into that.
