Can / Should I run for congress?
Is it too late? Does anyone have good info about how to do it? I know there was something for takebackcongress and liberty candidates, but I can't find it on the DP or the web right now.
My rep is bought and paid for by big pharma, won't co-sponsor 1207 and is generally an enemy of the taxpayer.
I don't really believe I can win, although that is the goal, it will be another place to get our message out. We saw how much momentum Ron gained just for running, maybe I can have a tiny fraction of that impact here in NJ.
Any suggestions, ideas?
I know the platform -
1- bring all of our troops home
2- audit the fed
3- get government out of healthcare
4- end the income tax
5- get out of the UN
maybe 6* - legalize marijuana.
In short "Obey the Constitution"
Update 4pm 8/12/09
So far I have contacted my County GOP for help and also emailed RetakeCongress.com
I will be contacting the Republican Liberty Caucus and possibly 9-12 (I am a little concerned about 9-12, I saw Glenn Beck pitching it and instantly became suspicious) any info on 9-12 that I can't find on their website would be great. If it is Glenn Beck related, as long as I can adhere to our platform I will join just because it's microphone is plugged into more speakers than mine.
Love the DailyPaul. Hope more people here can join me. Thanks to everyone below

Always abide by Constitution and remember who you work for.
Yesterday while listening to talk radio, a candidate for congress was being interviewed. He was constantly boasting about himself, without a shred of humbleness for what he was about to undertake. He never did answer the host's question about whether or not he would always follow the law of the land. He slipped and slided around that question. It is all but certain that he is just another warmongering, bullying neocon.

if you go door to door,
if you go door to door, collect emails, and say that you're doing a money bomb on a certain date. you have to go door to door and get many people to cover the entire district. then you can win.
That's a decision only you can make, however, become a
candidate of a party that's popular in your district. There's no sense running an uphill battle. Put your website up 1st, then your signs. You'll have to be a candidate at least twice for name recognition & 1nce the election is done, if you lose, keep the signs up so you have name recognition. Expect to use alot of your own $. Expect to have little volunteer help, don't expect election fraud not to occur. Make sure your platform is in complete compliance w/ the US Constitution, your authority is limited to Art 1, Sect 8, so you can't promise anyone anything beyond that. Respectfully bury the skeletons in your closet, during the night so no one will see you & say a prayer.
For some reason, we're expected to know every law that exists in America & in our state so we don't break it. We're supposed to know this when we're 18. There's no litmus test for them, as in the 10 commandments or rhyme or reason. C.U.R.E.
career politicians
Career politicians are the worse type of critter....for the record.
Just don't be that. You can't be a good Libertarian without despising the entire thing while you're there.
Drug war is dumb...We had a Reagan drug war in the 80's meanwhile the CIA was running tons of drugs. Classic U.S. government- creating a problem and trying to fix it at same time.
agree
that's what I'm up against.

Run!
Go to your Town Hall to ask a question about your favorite Bill and then ask the croud if they would support your run, there would be a thunderous response is my guess.
Love it
I was thinking introducing my question by using Celente's explanation of fascism, and how my congressman has supported our march into it. He can't go back and take his vote back on the bailouts, but doesn;t he care where the money went? Why would he allow the darkness to continue by not co-sponsoring hr1207, a full audit of the Fed which has 282 co-sponsors. This is your time to take a stand for the American people, who's side is he on, is he for the people or for his friends on Wall street.

I have been reviewing the
I have been reviewing the information to run here in Colorado and will be old enough to run by election time. I live in Grand Junction and will run as a republican. I am torn on whether to run for Senate or Congress. I am more familiar with Nevada politics since I was a delegate there so I have alot of work to do to get in good with the Republican party here and figure out what I can do to try and push our message forward.

Wow, must be something in the water there
It must still be in my system!
I lived in Grand Junction in 2004, worked at the Mesa Theater briefly. I was thinking congress will be easier because US Senate is just too much for people like us to cover an entire state. Unless you are talking about state senate.

Congress is
Often people say Congress to mean both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Might be too late already
Petitions in my state are already being distributed. The Primary is less than 6 months away. I suggest you study election laws in your state first. Do you have financial backing? Will local businesses write you a check, what about neighbors and friends? Your state will requirement on how to use and report those donations. Congressional primaries can take hundreds of thousands of dollars to win for a non-incumbent.
Check your local election laws.
Ask your local Precinct Committeeman for help, they can give you the straight scoop.
Run for Precinct Committeeman to learn the process.
Get involved in C4L, political groups, and your local Young Republicans if you are under 40.
Sorry, but if you need to ask this question on the internet, you're not ready to run.

Thanks
I know I am not "ready" to do it, but I feel that if I can at least speak truth to power a few times and draw people to our message, that I have done something for the greater cause. I've been reading the election laws, most of it seems like I can do it, but I am still hesitant about some of the candidate requirements, diclosures and more. I'm really hoping to discuss this matter with another candidate or former candidate. I have emailed takebackcongress twice now and have yet to receive a reply.
I don't have any financial backing. The local GOP seemed welcoming to the idea because the democrat incumbant is usually unopposed or running against an unwilling, late to the gate republican who is just filling a void to provide some resistance.

Talk to your PC
Seriously, talk to your Precinct Committeeman. If your precinct doesn't have one, run. It is an EXCELLENT first step in politics. That's why I am running. I get to walk my precinct, talk to people, get complaints (I expect lots), and build local support for the people and issues I'm passionate about.
I also plan on getting support for getting rid of our damn Stop Light Cameras!

first step
Taking first steps can yield tangible results. Set yourself up for city council or water board or sanitation board.

If you are running anywhere in the south
Make sure you make your stance on abortion clear. Most of the christians I know said they was voting for mccain because they said he was against abortion (even though he voted to fund planned parent hood).
Even if you are for abortion, you could promise never to vote for a money to go for it. Or you could do a Dr. Paul and say it should be left up to the states (I am against abortion but this is my stance).
It is not exactly what you are for or against but how discreet you are in that stuff. Take Dr. Paul when it came to the war on terror, the guys over the debate always did their best to make him lose his discretion on the war. So it is not what you sell it is how you sell it.
By the way how do you plan to sell your plan?
I'll sell it like this
Your Rep is a career politician. Your rep voted for the bailouts. Your Rep voted for Cap and Trade, Your Rep supports the endless wars, Your Rep supports turning over healthcare to the Government. Your rep was bought and paid for by big pharma. Who does he represent, you or Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi?
I do not have any lobbyist friends, I don't know any and I don't plan on making friends with any just to get elected. I will vote no on any bill that I don't have the opportunity to read, and I will take my oath to the people of my district and the Constitution seriously. I will do everything in my power to keep your money out of the government's hands and leave it where it belongs, with you.
Here is the magic bullet that will help you win
Propose that instead of moving to DC, you will telecommute and vote from a home office in your district. People can quickly see how this changes every thing. Instead of being surrounded by lobbyists you will be surrounded by constituents.
Here is the discussion of the idea!
http://www.dailypaul.com/node/103024
Brilliant
Thank you
obey the constitution
should be point 6. ( should be point 1 technically )
you can elaborate how the war on drugs violates the constitution if asked but i wouldn't set out to be the legalize drugs candidate. none of your other views will be heard if you allow the debate to be constantly shifted to legalizing drugs, which is what your opponents will surely do.
please tell me you'll be replacing chris smith.
"The two weakest arguments for any issue on the House floor are moral and constitutional"
Ron Paul
Not smith, Pallone
I agree with you on how to frame that argument
I already know how Pallone would view me
"that guy doesn't have a chance, he doesn't even know any lobbyists"
that should be on my sign. thanks for the tips.
you must have a spotless background
if you ever cheated on your spouse, now is the time to tell everyone you know. If you ever cheated on your taxes...if you ever failed to pay a parking ticket...get these things in order before the election. You can't have anything that they could hold over your head or do a media assassination on you the week before the election.
Run as INDEPENDENT or MODERATE (if the Moderate Party is recognized in your state). Libertarian would be my 3rd choice - sheeple voters still sort of squirm at the idea of "Libertarian". The GOP may not take you if you haven't been visible - you know showing up at town hall meetings, let alone GOP meetings. No one likes party crashers - obviously the GOP does not.
Start off at at your local clerks office and ask them how to do it. Make friends with them...let them show you what to do and who to call...they will become silent advocates for you because you will be "their project" in their mind. Then make best friends with the ladies and gentlemen behind the counter at the Secretary of State's office.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
