Daily S 604 phone/email/fax bomb! 8/13/09

So, I am deciding to do 2 a day for a while, because I think 4 might be a little too much for some people. Hopefully this will get more participation if it is a little more simple. By the way, I am posting these under the "Activism" forum from now on instead of the "Daily Paul Liberty Forum" since that one seems to be pretty inflated.

Today's Victims: Arlen Specter D-PN and Jim Bunning R-KY. Both of these Senators have been targeted by us before, but I think we can get both to sign on with some pressure. Bunning has stated he supports the bill but doesn't see it necessary to cosponsor. How about we let him know that it is necessary he joins the list. Also, Specter was asked at his town hall the other day if he supports Fed transparency, and he stated he believes we need more transparency. How about we hold him to his word about that!

petitions

I think the petitions that we gathered had a good effect here on Ben Chandler. The 912 group was putting a bunch of pressure on him as well. We hand delivered a stack of petitions--one signature per page--and soon thereafter he co-sponsored.

He is asking that all of his scheduled appearances be closed to the public and won't have a town hall meeting.

I just got a response to an

I just got a response to an email I sent Jack Reed for one of our phone/email/fax bombs. It is the same b.s. about waiting until it is "considered by the Committee or full Senate" to co-sponsor it.

Here it is:

Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 604, the Federal Reserve Sunshine Act. I appreciate learning your thoughts on this matter.

S. 604 was introduced by Senator Sanders on March 16, 2009. This bill would require the Comptroller General of the United States to conduct an audit of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and of the Federal Reserve Banks before the end of 2010. S. 604 has been referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. Representative Paul introduced a companion bill, H.R. 1207, in the House of Representatives.

As we work to reform our financial regulatory system, we need to look closely at the current and proposed role of the Federal Reserve, especially given its own regulatory failures leading up to the financial crisis, and its role in the recovery.

As a member of the Banking Committee, I am actively engaged in the debate on the modernization of the financial regulatory system. You can also be assured that I will continue to play an active role overseeing the government's efforts to address the financial crisis, advocating for policies to restore confidence in our financial markets, and working to enact economic policies that promote fairness and address the essential needs of middle class families. I will also keep your thoughts in mind should S. 604 or related legislation be considered by the Committee or full Senate.

Again, thank you for contacting me, and do not hesitate to write, call, or visit my website, www.reed.senate.gov, in the future for information regarding this or any other matter.

Sincerely,

Jack Reed
United States Senator

Got the same email.

Got that too. Also, I got an email response from Senator Lamar Alexander today. He was part of the list on the 11th. In it he said that he will not be cosponsoring the bill, because he thinks it will allow for a takeover of monetary policy by Congress. I wrote him back copying and pasting the text of the legislation, and explained that it would not interfere with monetary policy. I think I'm going to put him in tomorrow's contact again, so people can write him back and educate him of what the bill does!

Everyone at least do one of the options. We can for sure get Begich and Bunning on board if people actually fax/email/call them! They say they support the bill, so demand they prove their support by cosponsoring. With Specter also stating he supports Fed transparency, lay the same down on him!

Response from Sen. Begich

I'm adding him to the list right now so we can contact him today too. Looks like we might have a good shot with him as well!

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009. I support a thorough investigation of the financial crisis to bring accountability to those responsible and a greater level of transparency to our financial system.

Part of protecting Main Street involves ensuring the financial institutions upon which our economy depends are prevented from failing and further burdening our already stressed economy and citizens. With billions of dollars in tax-payer money going out to the banking industry, increased disclosure of the Federal Reserve's operations is needed for proof these funds are in fact being used responsibly and in the best interest of Alaskans and the American people.

Alaskans and other Americans work hard every day without the benefit of bailouts and bonuses. I look forward to developing further solutions for hard-working Alaskans and Americans as our country deals with this economic crisis.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this issue. Please do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of further assistance to you on this or any other matter.

Sincerely,
Mark Begich
U.S. Senator
