Buy American
Did anyone else notice Nixon saying that as long as you didn't travel abroad and bought American there should be no real change in your life? Unfortunately the next 38 years have been spent making sure we couldn't buy American. The US no longer has a self-sustaining manufacturing sector.
And don't get me started on oil. During the Carter administration the US imported less than 30% on its total consumption. How much do we import now? 70%? More? The Reaganites decided it would be in the nations best interest to use every last drop of Arab oil before using US oil. Bad as that idea was for the US domestic oil industry, it was devistating to the dollar.
Yep
I noticed when he said "buy American" too.
Buga boo's
Buga boo's , devaluation hahaha your kidding right?

Speaking of history, Ronald Reagan is worth listenng to
Ronald Reagan warned us about socialised medicine. Evidently, the left have been itching to bring it in for decades.

Reagan: The Great American Socialist
Reagan was the strong adherent and public conceptual architect of trickle down theory economics (aka Reaganomics) that has been a proven disaster over the decades. The gravatation of wealth from the rich never accured. The lost big government revenue from the rich caused a disproportional burden on the backs of poor and middle classes (ie. inflation). Reagan talked the talk but didn't walk the walk. The size of government actually increased under his administration. His was a confidant for the freedom of rich elite. The results of this policy are still blossoming today.

Vocabulary words used:
ADHERENT, n. A follower who has not yet obtained all that he expects to get.
ARCHITECT, n. One who drafts a plan of your house, and plans a draft of your money.
GRAVITATION, n. The tendency of all bodies to approach one another with a strength proportion to the quantity of matter they contain — the quantity of matter they contain being ascertained by the strength of their tendency to approach one another. This is a lovely and edifying illustration of how science, having made A the proof of B, makes B the proof of A.

That is exactly what I have
That is exactly what I have always believed. I think Reagan tried to mitigate disaster where possible and tried to assert his vision, but was thwarted by the evil ones running the show. They manipulated his fears about communism and national defense. I think Daddy Bush and Cheney even controlled baby Bush. The Clintons were buddies too. I'm not sure there has been a regime change since Bush Sr.

Politicians are idiots
Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reason.
The MSM has an advantage in that they control the discussion therefore there is limited freedom of ideas. Without freedom of ideas, liberty is not sacrosanct. The foundation of a free market society undermined the by controlling special interests is a charade that cannot be discussed for too long in the media. When it is not hidden or covered up then and only then truth becomes transparently clear. The sponsers decide you regurgitate unfiltered from deception and/or diversion.
Vocabulary words used:
DECIDE, v.i. To succumb to the preponderance of one set of influences over another set.
DISCUSSION, n. A method of confirming others in their errors.
IDIOT, n. A member of a large and powerful tribe whose influence in human affairs has always been dominant and controlling. The Idiot's activity is not confined to any special field of thought or action, but "pervades and regulates the whole." He has the last word in everything; his decision is unappealable. He sets the fashions and opinion of taste, dictates the limitations of speech and circumscribes conduct with a dead-line.
LIBERTY, n. One of Imagination's most precious possessions.
POLITICS, n. A strife of interests masquerading as a contest of principles. The conduct of public affairs for private advantage.
TRUTH, n. An ingenious compound of desirability and appearance. Discovery of truth is the sole purpose of philosophy, which is the most ancient occupation of the human mind and has a fair prospect of existing with increasing activity to the end of time.

If only I knew enough to buy gold that day...
It was about $40.00 an ounce until after Nixon's announcement.
Before that, I believe that Americans could not even own gold.
How's that for freedom???

It was against the law for US citizens to own gold until, I think it was, 1975.

Arlo Guthrie
THEN: Woody Guthrie's son followed Melanie on day one. He had made a name for himself with his 1967 album "Alice's Restaurant" and the 1969 Arthur Penn-directed film it inspired. The film was released on August 19, 1969 - three days after Guthrie's Woodstock appearance. Arlo's set is most memorable for his one line commentary on the overflow crowd. Before playing a Bob Dylan cover of "Walking Down the Line," Guthrie noted, "New York State throughway is closed, man. Lotta freaks!"
NOW: Guthrie has dedicated himself to bridging cultural and political divides. The son of the ultimate leftist, supported Republican Ron Paul during the 2008 primary explaining his choice by saying, "We had enough good Democrats. We needed a few more good Republicans." He bought the church owned by "Alice's Restaurant" namesake Alice Brock and has turned into the Guthrie Center, a meeting place for people of all religions
Alice's Restaurant is a
Alice's Restaurant is a libertarian masterpiece. The restaurant is a free market where "you can get anything you want."
In the song Arlo really socks it to the tyrannical elements of American society from the psychotic military recruiters (we were both jumping up and down shouting: kill! kill!) to environmentalists (we thought that one big pile of garbage was better than two little piles of garbage and rather than bring that one up we decided to throw ours down).
The song takes place on Thanksgiving which of course is a holiday celebrating the bountiful harvest which the Massachusetts colonists produced after having abandoned a commune like system which had resulted in mass starvation and the near total destruction of the community.
Gotta love Arlo.

I wonder if suspending domestic convertibility was also temporary?

Excerpt:
"When on August 15, 1971, Richard Nixon defaulted on the gold obligations of the United States and declared the irredeemable dollar the “ultimate” means of payments and liquidator of debt, he was relying on the expert advice of Chicago economist Milton Friedman. Five years later the world’s oldest central bank, the Swedish Riksbank would bestow upon Friedman the prize it established in memory of Alfred Nobel. The reward would be in recognition of the brilliance of Friedman’s idea that if a central bank robs the people piecemeal (read: it dilutes the currency at a fixed rate of, say, 3 percent per annum) then the victims would not cry “we wuz robbed!” They would never notice the robbery.
In all previous episodes shame and disgrace were part and parcel of the government’s default on its promises to pay. Not so in 1971. In this latest experiment with irredeemable currency there was a new feature: far from being a disgrace, the default was presented as a scientific breakthrough; conquering “monetary superstition” epitomized by gold; a triumph of progress. Sycophant governments and central banks overseas that were victimized by it and had to swallow unprecedented losses due to the devaluation of the dollar were not even allowed to say “ouch!” They were forced to celebrate their own undoing and hail the advent of the New Age of synthetic credit, irredeemable currencies and irredeemable debts.
The regime of the irredeemable dollar was put to the test soon enough. In 1979 the genie escaped from the bottle. The price of oil, silver, and gold were quoted at twenty times that prior to 1971; in the case of sugar the rate of increase was more like forty times, so much so that the Coca Cola Company found it too expensive to put into coke and started using corn syrup instead. Interest rates were quoted in double digits well past the teens. There was panic across the land and around the globe. Hoarding of goods became a way of life. Everybody was expecting the worst."

If the inflation rate is known and predictable ...
... Friedman’s idea that if a central bank robs the people piecemeal (read: it dilutes the currency at a fixed rate of, say, 3 percent per annum) then the victims would not cry “we wuz robbed!” They would never notice the robbery.
If the inflation rate is known and predicable, people won't say "we wuz robbed" because they aren't. They'd know that the money is slowly rotting and be able to make an intelligent choice on whether to hold the rotting hot potato or swap it for something better - i.e. that they expected to grow in dollar terms faster than the dollar shrank, that would last and be useful and needed later when it would cost more dollars, etc.
Problem is that inflation is not, and can't be, stable and predicable. Value is a measure of the behavior of market players. So stable inflation is a myth - even if it is a target of (eventually unsuccessful) monetary policy.
