I want to run for congress! I decided tonight
Submitted by jzneff on Thu, 08/20/2009 - 00:03
If anyone is better at internet searching than I...I need to know the qualifications to run for congress in Kentucky.
Specifically...I need to know how long I need to have been a resident of the state to run.
I'm feeling very inspired tonight, and I want to run for congress. I want to work with Rand Paul and represent the people of Kentucky in the house.
The problem is, I have only lived here since September of 2006. I'm not sure if I'm qualified.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I think you should....If u can...I will support you...

Good news;
the more freedom candidates the better.
Congressman? They make $150K per year and get $1,000,000
budget...
Voting is Abdication of Self-Rule......For RPers we "vote" believe the invidual we empower will fight to give it back.
If someone asked me to run and said "here is my abdicated authority - go fight to give it back to me" -- I'd turn a full 360 and hand it back clean and pressed.

Consider me there.
I have some beautiful children that will be with me. No-one can say no to them, including me.
Let me know.
I consider the door to door volunteer the most important part of a campaign.
I might even have an inside connection on getting some census tract information as well.

Right on!
I was planning on bringing my little girl on the stump with me also...we'll see if you can produce some cuter children than me. lol
Door to door is important...I'm thinking a more effective means might be malls, colleges, and Six Flags (nothing else to do while you're standing in line)
I like inside connections...I need every edge I can get.
ps...I checked out Cincy's Kings Island a few weeks back...quite impressed.

Run, run, run... 2010, I
Run, run, run...
2010, I assume, or are you talking more about a long term proposition?
If you have a choice, try to find a district with weak Republican opposition, both in terms of liberty credentials and chances against likely Democratic opponents. If you manage to win the GOP primary, you'll get all kinds of attention even from self described "right wingers" with little more concern for liberty than the Democratic 'socialists" they love to rag on. While they may ignore you during primaries, once you're their man, their high school football game worldview will work in your favor.
Oh yes
I'm thinking 2010.
I'm trying to decide between the Louisville district and the Lexington district. Both have sitting Democrats.
I'm thinking that if I could get the nomination...I could pound any Democrat. I can appeal to the anti-war democrats, the social liberals, and especially the "I couldn't care less" crowd. That's our bread and butter in this movement...the people who don't like government and don't vote because they know it really makes no difference.
I've got my get rid of the income tax math ready to roll...borrowed from the good doctor. If we cut our federal spending to 2000 levels, we could eliminate the income tax entirely and still have the same at the end of the day. You could keep your income tax, and either save it or buy something cool.
How many people could have bought a car in April if they recieved every dime of their income tax back. There's some stimulus for you. Maybe that would have bailed out GM.

Give me a little time to prove I'm serious, and then we'll talk donations...
But I definitely expect a Daily Paul moneybomb once I get my name on the ballot.

A few questions/items any new candidate should think about
Why do you want to run? Some people run to pad their resume, RP ran because he had something to say, and some run to win. If you're running to win: How much money does it take to run a competitive campaign? Where would you get the money? Would you keep your full time job while running? How much time would it take to wage a serious campaign? Are you willing to commit that much time? How does your wife feel about it? How strong is the incumbent? Did he win a close race or did win in a landslide? Are there other GOP candidates? What are the chances for getting the party's nomination? Are they grooming a challenger? Would you have to primary as a challenger? Same money/time questions as above for the primary. Its a good idea to talk to the party chairman to feel him out about you running. Talk to the GOP candidate in '08, he can tell you what to expect trying to get the nomination and during the campaign. (I've heard candidates say that the nomination in their district wasn't worth spit, but at least you'll be able to prepare.) What are the filing requirements? I assume you're a registered party member. Those are the items I can come up with quickly. I wish you good luck, the more people we have in office the better!
Some answers
I know they were rhetorical questions...but I'd like to answer a few.
Why do i want to run? I feel I have a lot of ability and talents, and I feel they're being wasted selling industrial chemicals. I also can't help but feel guilty looking into my daughter's eyes knowing what kind of world I'm going to send her out into. I want to make a change. I don't intend to make a statement...I intend to win and represent the real people of Kentucky.
I don't know where the money will come from...I'm not quite independantly wealthy unfortunately, so i'll have to lean on the freedom movement, the C4L, take back congress, and other patriots. I plan to run as a GOP, so after I can get nominated they will probably help as well.
I can commit a whole lot of time...i don't like what I'm doing and would rather spend my time doing something meaningful. I'm outgoing, and I would not bat an eye to spend days and days going door to door, meeting people at the mall or university...i have great stamina and can talk for hours to complete strangers.
I'll check out the 2008 elections, and figure out where I might have the best chance. I don't want to run in my district, but 2 districts very near me have sitting democrats.
I can get the votes to win the nomination. You can't underestimate the amount of people who are fed up with their congressmen and want a breath of fresh air. I can speak to issues that will unite us all.
I will not challenge a sitting GOP congressman, as it's unadvisable, so that's why I want to run against a sitting dem.
Filing requirements...you need $500 and be a resident of the state.
Good questions...it gives me some stuff to read up on. I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

Hey Jeff,
I will support you in every way possible. Click my link, there is a ton of info on that thread that people gave me, I am getting very close to making my decision as well. Anything I can do to help I will do, just let me know patriot!
I googled Division of Elections, New Jersey and got most of the info I needed there. I am assuming the same for your home state.

I think that would be great!
I think that would be great! I would even donate to your campaign!
are you willing to forgo the congressional retirement plan etc.?

Matthew 10:34 Think not that I am come to
send peace on earth: I came not to send peace,

That means a lot
This reassures me that this movement is right and we are part of something special and great.
As far as forgoing retirement plan...I will give it some thought...hate to promise anything like that 12 hours into my campaign.

Here is your answer as far
Here is your answer as far as a run for congress : Must be at least 25 years of age, a U.S. citizen for 7 years, and, when elected, an inhabitant of the State for which you have chosen.
