AntiWar no more?

Well I went to Antiwar.com, hearing that it was good, and I heard that they had a good radio podcast. But when I went there, it says they are on the verge of destruction. His this sight worth trying to save? I dont know because I have never been there before. So, has anyone been there?

Antiwar.com is a great site

and if you appreciate the links that it provides to news stories from around the world, then maybe you should consider sending them a donation. I visit it every day for the latest news on war around the world. I know nothing about the expense of maintaining their site, but $23300 operating budget per month to maintain a full time professional staff and services can't come cheap.

Antiwar.com, contrary to comments below, is neither left nor right. It is against unjust wars, often taking a libertarian position.

They do fund drives four times a year, just like public tv stations, in lieu of taking advertising, like Salon. Whether or not this is a good business model, that is for them to decide. As with most fund raisers, they must put a sense of urgency into their appeal or they are unlikely to get timely donations.

I have not sent them money. My wife wouldn't understand the donation when our own economic lives are precarious. I appreciate the people who DO donate and keep the site operating.

Agreed!

Even though it may have sounded as if I was against donating, I was just trying to inform the people who were new to this type of fund raising.
As in, don't be 'scared' or 'pushed' into doing something. If you have the spare money, and someone provides a good service, and are so-compelled, then donate. But don't allow yourself to be scare-tactic'd into it.

Your message is spot-on!

one of the best if not the best anti war website

Ron Paul writes articles for them and they often do interviews with him and other patriots...but as poster below says they have some kind of problem perhaps with salaries...

"Our planet is the mental institution for the universe."
-- Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe
"Maybe this world is another planet's hell."
-- Aldous Huxley

Okay.

Thanks for the comments. Well it looks like we have to let the free market rule this one. I didnt know they were asking every year, that isn't right. I hope they dont go under, I hope they just reform the site.

This is nothing new

As great as Antiwar is for content, they are always begging for money.
It's always a rather ridiculously large number also.
Most of the time it's above $50,000-$70,000 in funds required.

I've been visiting off and on for several years, and there isn't a day when they aren't in a supposed state of emergency or otherwise asking for donations.

There's plenty of antiwar bloggers and writers, and antiwar host providers. Not sure why they always need so much. Nothing against making a profit while providing a service, but if they're payroll is so out of control then that's just bad business :)

A sense of urgency!

And the 'take away' are usually their favored methods of motivating donations.

Here's a few of their homepage makeovers over the years, after a quick browse of the internet archives :)

2004: http://web.archive.org/web/20040210121725/http://www.antiwar...

2005: http://web.archive.org/web/20050507052855/http://antiwar.com/

2007: http://web.archive.org/web/20070212125205/http://www.antiwar...

Those are just a few that I found real quick.. But you get the idea, the website donation makeover comes every quarter, and it's always a panic..

Nothing new..

They do need support, they have about 30 bloggers on staff.
And use one of the most expensive hosting services on the 'net..

hmmmm.

This site is such a good bridge for the left. It's a great
first website to send "progressive types." Just yesterday
I directed an Obama-bot there who was walking door to door
pushing for socialized medicine. Having an all or nothing
fundraiser isn't very effective. It just seems like a black
hole. I hope someone in the Liberty movement can council
them--and get them on the right track. They may need to
downsize and run on less of a payroll for a year. It would
be great to see a wealthy person step up and tide them over
with the agreement that they must transition to a more workable
business model. That site is really important. - What can we do?
Know anyone with the mega-bucks?

Just that url: http://antiwar.com/ is a great one to own - better to
have it on the libertarian side than on the left. Here is what the
site usually looks like: http://www.antiwar.com/index2345.html

Musician, Blimpographer...Hear my music: www.myspace.com/americanpirates

Just launched http://iroots.org/
Activism Training.

It was a good site...

But, if they need the money that desperately for a single month's payroll, then donating to save them for another month won't help much.

Their business model must be wrong, and so even as good as the site and the people there are, I personally won't be contributing.

funding

They are always having funding problems....

Scott Horton used to be on a radio station though so maybe he could be independent if not. idk maybe not enough takers for a Libertarian approach.

A Great, Great Loss

Antiwar.com is one of the very best sites for freedom lovers.
