Time Mag Cover Story: The High Price of Cheap Food
Submitted by Michael Nystrom on Sat, 08/22/2009 - 14:03Time Magazine's Cover Story begins:
Somewhere in Iowa, a pig is being raised in a confined pen, packed in so tightly with other swine that their curly tails have been chopped off so they won't bite one another. To prevent him from getting sick in such close quarters, he is dosed with antibiotics. The waste produced by the pig and his thousands of pen mates on the factory farm where they live goes into manure lagoons that blanket neighboring communities with air pollution and a stomach-churning stench. He's fed on American corn that was grown with the help of government subsidies and millions of tons of chemical fertilizer. When the pig is slaughtered, at about 5 months of age, he'll become sausage or bacon that will sell cheap, feeding an American addiction to meat that has contributed to an obesity epidemic currently afflicting more than two-thirds of the population. And when the rains come, the excess fertilizer that coaxed so much corn from the ground will be washed into the Mississippi River and down into the Gulf of Mexico, where it will help kill fish for miles and miles around. That's the state of your bacon — circa 2009.

Our bodies are designed to
Our bodies are designed to run on either sugar or fat. Burning fat is far healthier. Some glucose is needed, as the brain runs on it, but the rest of the body does perfectly well (if not wholly better) burning fat and ketones. Your blood sugar is regulated by the protein you eat, which gets converted to blood sugar on an as needed basis. Fructose is metabolized by the liver in a way that is indistinguishable from alcohol, so it's no wonder that over-doing the fruits is bad for you. Today's fruits (whether GMO or good ol' selective breeding) are far higher in fructose than wild fruits which our bodies were adapted to eat. Eat them, but eat them sparingly, especially if you have previously been a heavy carb eater... your liver will thank you.
Meat, on the other hand, eat as much as you like until satisfied (which doesn't really take that much as long as you ditch the mashed potatoes). Same for eggs. You should get your trace minerals from leafy greens and berries.
It is a lie that you need carbs for anything more than fat storage. Read up on how insulin works. Think about how the Inuit live on nothing but fish and whale blubber.

Saturated Fat == Life, without it your mitochrondia do not convert food into energy, produce too much hydrogen peroxide and superoxide radical during respiration.
Everything we've been taught about food is a lie, promulgated via government subsidy of specific sectors of the food production economy, ie. corn and soybeans.

They can subsist on that diet for the same reason a person of Eastern European heritage can subsist on potatoes and sausage while an African-American or Mexican/South American native becomes an overweight diabetic - evolutionary metabolic adaptation. This was the answer to a question hispanics and diabetes I posed to emergency department head physician some years ago during my clinical rotations.

did they talk about global warming?
As soon as I hear that propaganda I'm not buying any of it.
Sixty dollars to feed a family of 9 at In and Out Burger.
Sixty dollars on devitalized, adulterated potatoes, grease and meat?
They had double/doubles and fries and coke.
Why don't they eat raw burger made from ground grass fed bison meat and capers (steak tartar).

Yesterday, I traveled to a region of California that still has nutrient dense, sweet and juicy oranges. Just nibble on one end, and it becomes a decanter of fresh squeezed orange juice. Then, fold back the skin, and chew off the fiber. Absolutely delightful and you can feel the energy!
Buy from your local small family farmer.
The cost for 40 pounds of highest quality oranges, six bucks.
(15 cents per pound)

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”
That's a good deal
That's less than $10.00 per person.. for double doubles? I will defend their fries.. made from fresh whole potaoes, washed, cut and fried on the spot.. and the fact it is a family owned francise who could very easily go national or sell out to Yum or other fast food national/international conglomerates... I give In & Out Burger an A+.. they pay benefits for their employees, pay above min wages, promote from within, pay their managers enough money to actually live where they are operating the store. I have never had a double double, I can't even eat a whole chesseburger animal style. Double double.. my gawd!!!!
I remember when Orange County was oranges. I remember when Valencia was Oranges.. perhaps one day, I remember when North Bakersfeild to Fresno on the 99 was not oranges (they are at their best for picking fresh to eat in january) And all due respect to Hawai'i and tropics where plumeria wafts on the air, but an orange grove is heaven.. so is sitting in an orange or grapefruit grove and drunking screwdrivers or salty dogs... or sitting in a vineyard drinking wine..
But then, there is nothing quite like eating outdoors, especially around fire.. that primal mammelian mouth watering smell of burning flesh. You're not human if that does not smell mouth watering, I don't care who you are.
I wish we had more In & Outs and less McDonald's. I'm glad Subway is doing better with their fresh bread.
In the 80's a fest food chain opened, D'Lites http://www.scripophily.net/dofamge19.html They had a sandwich, seved on a pita, it was a filling, that i could never duplicate until I began studying raw foods.. I believe D'Lites Pita Sandwich was a "raw food", raw soaked almonds and sunflowers processed in a champion juicer and with onion, celery, some herbs.... served with lettuce and tomatoe.. it was awesome "rawsome"...
I love In & Out (nearest one to me is 70 miles away) and I love Norms... Every Norms is different... and I could see Norms adding raw food to it's menu in LaCienga or Huntington Beach. That's another Mom and Pop CA francise that treats it's employees as partners... But i think Norms is going to disolve as CA catches up to the future.
Imagain if JP Morgan backed Tesla and not Edison.
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!
For fast food, In & Out and Norms "best".
However, the movie "super size me" (30 days eating at McDonalds) sets the parameters of value for your dollar.
Meat is heavily subsidized.
A cooked potatoe is more like plastic.
Personally, I get no thrill from even In & Out. It still taste like cardboard with salt, and I end up with indigestion and lethargy. Try three meals in a row, and your bowl movement slow to a crawl.
Now, raw bison meat, or even raw steak from cow, I digest without problem, and feel exciting.
Down with cooked fast food, I'll never miss it.
After being a raw fooder for some time, my taste buds have changed.
The aroma of burning meat brings back memories of indigestion, lethargy and constipation.
Burning meat, even a barbeque smells rancid to me.
Try "steak tartar" on a bun. Less gout, less tumors.

Accents of lemon . . ooh yes.
And, I just re-read my post and . . it is funny. I tell ya Granger, I have a lot of fun throwing the raw food lifestyle around, and yet I had a fine roasted turkey sandwich with horesradish just today, and was great!
Tonight, no food, but tomorrow water melon and peaches, nothing cooked.
Thru raw, I've become aware my sense of health and body talk, so now raw always attracts me first, but it's the vision of health that really attracts me to the raw life style. And sharing with others, and attending raw pot lucks help keep me "more bouncy" and in the game of life.
You are an awesome person Granger, my compliments to you!

You will LOVE Harbin
Check out the workshops, those are the deals. My friend, holistic chef/nutrition educator, Jenn Una, is having a three day rejuvenating retreat Aug 28 to 30, which includes all meals and camping. I met her at Living Light Rawfood Culinary Institute.
Harbin is built and maintained with more LOVE than money. I think you will find it a Nirvana.
BTW, last year some friends invited me to harbin to "help me with my addiction to Ron Paul". In the community kitchen, was a Ron Paul slim jim hanging on the bullitain board. Totally made my trip! But my friends suspected that I had put the slim Jim up as there were no other political flyers at all. I was accused of putting up the Ron Paul flyer and when I denied it, my friends really thought I was sick. LOL
I met allot a really wonderful people and had a fantastic time, and while some of these friends no longer talk to me because they think I put up the RP Slim Jim and lied about it.. I know I did not put it up, but I was really happy to see it. Some folks think of Harbin as the New Age Ground Zero. Maybe it is. They have a nice Labryth to walk to contemplate such thoughts. ;)) And the Daphni... ahhhhh heaven.

Everything In Moderation, Shop Free Range, Non-Pasteurized
Wouldn't mind eating bacon if it came from the pigs at Al-Mar Orchards near Flint, Michigan. On June 25, 2009, the owners made a field day of their organic orchards. One of their experiments is to run young pigs through the orchard to rut it up, act as "herbicide" and fertilize at the same time...free range, no doubt. They also produce some great organic hard cider:)
Note from a temporarily "retired" non-pasteurized, raw cider maker: When visiting your favorite orchard market this fall, make sure to ask for non-pasteurized, non-processed, no additives apple cider. I believe, the only statist state to forbid it's sale is NY. Otherwise, they will usually provide, if you ask. But, only if they actually make it themselves. Nobody wants another Odw_ _ _ _ situation, marketing a perishable product in seven states and Canada. Don't forget to tell 'em you're a Ron Paul/Liberty proponent!

"American addiction to meat
"American addiction to meat that has contributed to an obesity epidemic currently afflicting more than two-thirds of the population"
This is an outright lie as it correlates directly eating meat with getting fat. That is simply not true. Carbohydrate intake causes fat storage. I suggest watching the movie 'Fathead' for a primer. http://fathead-movie.com/
The clear link between government and diet is made and it's hard to refute.
But, hey, doctors don't understand nutrition, so why should some schmuck at Time magazine.
The whole thing is a disgusting example of the big lie they've been telling us for years... that the 'free market' cannot account for the 'externalities' (or external costs) of production without regulation. It was nonsense then and it's nonsense now.
Ta,

Overconsumption of any
Overconsumption of any foodgroup can cause problems, this includes fruits believe it or not.
Your body will only digest for nutrition a certain amount of food. If you don't use what you ingest, your body will store it. The problem with protein intake is when you eat it in amounts that is greater than what your body needs to replace old cells or build new tissue, your body will store it.
Carbs is the same thing, carbs are turned into sugar in our body that is the energy we run on. If you load up on too much carbs your body will convert it to fat and store it.
Vitamins, our body needs alot of different vitamins, some of them we can never ingest too much of, but there are some that if we take in too much, we'll have side effects.
This is why, eating in moderation is key to a healthy diet.
Now my problem with fast food is, in many cases they serve fatty meats and in some cases have added bread or eggs to get the desired taste or consistency. I personally will only eat meat if it's 85% or more lean when I buy it from the store, and when I cook it alot of the leftover fat melts away from the meat.
And I will tell you, I am raised on a diet that consisted 70% on red meats and dairy products (not in the US though) and portions of meat in the US are a lot bigger than I ever considered for a meal when I was growing up.
And thanks for the Fathead link, looks interesting and will watch it when I get time too.
When the body whispers to you, you've eaten enough, stop.
Definetly, book mark this:

You know something....
They are going to attack the food industry. Just like the health industry. Government just wants to control it all. People are living longer these days. Yes there is a flip side. Some get sick. But the majority don't. Look at the children these days. They are healthier. I look a kids. They are taller than ever before. Is that because they are undernourished.? No. Some are over weight. But that is up to the parents to decide what the child eats. Not the government. We don't need more governmental regulations. Leave the food industry alone. Keep the tyranical government out of it.

Glad they mentioned the dead zones
The pollution from the chemical overload is staggering. :(
From the article:
Our expanding girth is just one consequence of mainstream farming. Another is chemicals. No one doubts the power of chemical fertilizer to pull more crop from a field. American farmers now produce an astounding 153 bu. of corn per acre, up from 118 as recently as 1990. But the quantity of that fertilizer is flat-out scary: more than 10 million tons for corn alone — and nearly 23 million for all crops. When runoff from the fields of the Midwest reaches the Gulf of Mexico, it contributes to what's known as a dead zone, a seasonal, approximately 6,000-sq.-mi. area that has almost no oxygen and therefore almost no sea life. Because of the dead zone, the $2.8 billion Gulf of Mexico fishing industry loses 212,000 metric tons of seafood a year, and around the world, there are nearly 400 similar dead zones. Even as we produce more high-fat, high-calorie foods, we destroy one of our leanest and healthiest sources of protein.
BUY NIMAN RANCH MEATS!!
That is the major message I got from the article. Buy Nimans.
This point on the article is where I'm going to draw the line:
>Human Impact: The Omega Effect
Beef has a bad rep among nutritionists, but that might be partly unfair for grass-fed steaks. According to research from the University of California, grass-fed beef is higher in beta-carotene, vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids than conventional beef "
Did you know hemp food provides ALL the Omegas?
In this UN Agenda 21 movement to become "sustainable", this article BLAMES PEOPLE, it does not blame wars, or military testing, or it does not take into account the sun's activity, it blames people.
The article does not mention cannabis once.
America does not have enough domestic petrol, so it is unsustainable for America to continue to provide Americans with fresh strawberries every day of the week. It costs allot of oil to not eat seasonally.
Time does not mention haw subsidized crops, bought by corporations, for example... soft/summer flour... the majority is priced for cake mixes.. if you want to buy a box of soft flour, it is not easy to find, or cheap.. it is domestically(state by state) imported and a box costs $7.00.. you can get a cake mix for $0.77.
This TIME article is for the UN Agenda 21 Sustainable development, which to me, is a eugenic plan to starve people to death in the name of "saving the planet".
I agree with George Carlin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyxuVFzKypU

Farmer/Author Joel Salatin
Joel Salatin (the guy with the glasses and hat) is a "christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist". He has written numerous books on how to farm ethically and owns the famous "Polyface Farm". I have all of his books and started growing pastured raised poultry for myself this year. Salatin is trying to educate people on the forgotten farm practices and I found his advice priceless. He doesn't use chemicals nor does he try to get rich by cramming too many animals in one place. His books teach old fashioned pasture/animal management and, if done correctly, doesn't require chemicals. After reading his books I have started supporting local ethical dairyies and farms. And yes, it does cost more, these guys are competing with the big dogs. I buy my milk from a local dairy that uses the old glass containers (with a deposit) and keeps the cows on clean pasture. And I do believe you vote with your dollars.
Joel Salatin, Proud gramma here,
My first grandson is signed up to Joel Salatin's farm for an apprenticeship when he graduates in June. Of course we are delighted!
