15% of Preschoolers are Depressed
Almost 15 per cent of preschoolers have abnormally high levels of depression and anxiety, and a difficult temperament at five months of age is the most important early warning sign, a study has found.
Highly strung or tense four and five-year-olds are also more likely to have mothers with a history of depression than children who are not anxious or depressed.
The study, published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, was based on annual interviews with 1759 mothers about their children's behaviour from five months to five years of age.
The team of Canadian, French, US and British researchers from the International Laboratory for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Development said depression and anxiety symptoms could be identified in infants who were fearful or anxious, worried, not as happy as other children or who had difficulty having fun.
Difficulties in sleep, changes in appetite or concentration, lack of interest in things they used to find pleasurable and suddenly aggressive behaviour are also early warning signs.
The lead author, Sylvana Cote, a professor at the University of Montreal's department of social and preventive medicine, said: ''As early as the first year of life, there are indications that some children have more risks than others to develop high levels of depression and anxiety.''

When folks were talking universal Pre-K, all the sudden a "study" came out saying it's best to expose kids to pre-school at 3 and 4 years old.
There's a percentage of people who think a lot harder before putting their kids on drugs who wouldn't do that thinking if their kids had health insurance. But, if something costs the same whether you take it or not, more people will do it.
This is source of the new market that is being targeted. There's nothing special about 15% except that someone determined this is the size of market they could target as abnormal in order to sell more drugs.
There will be a huge increase in the number of insured children when universal health care goes through and we'll see way more of these new "discoveries."

It is trumped up harmful nonsense. If a child cries, they consider that he needs help. The government is getting into our heads as hard and fast as they can.
Yep, if a child cries, I help him.
I pick him up. I try to get him to express what's wrong. I comfort him, model empathy, and try to show him how to handle the stresses of life.
Oh, wait? That takes time and patience and doesn't always work and no one who can afford government lobbyists makes money off of that. Never mind, pills are so much better.

When still raising my children, and trying to grow up myself before the kids did..lol, I found one particular guideline handy when the children appeared to be unmanageable, rowdy, wild or whatever: Children's behaviour more often than not reflects the emotional state of the parent(s). If they were rowdy it wasn't a long step to realise that I was rowdy myself. If they were calm, lo and behold I was too. They were pushy, irritable, impatient.. yep, as soon as I realised what was happening and took control of myself, the kids just fell into place. Did that always work? nope, but 9 times out of 10 it would.
And I wasn't calm because the children were calm. No, children are like very sensitive antennas.. they pick up on the mood in the house before the parent does.
Conclusion: depressed children.. look at the parents' emotional state.
They've done this with the growth charts for a long time
If a kid is below the 5th percentile, they get tagged "failure to thrive". That's 1 in 20 kids by definition (if the charts were accurate).
An FTT older than one gets put on Pediasure, which is mostly glucose, the most unhealthy form of food sugar. Oh, yeah, sugar will fatten 'em up.
It's all a numbers game. Chart a spectrum of differences among children, designate a range as being unhealthy, and you have a predictable market.
Even if you know your kid is healthy, in this CPS paranoid era, you might just give your kid the Pediasure, not realizing how unhealthy it is.

RonPauler, my wife is concerned that our child is around the 25th percentile in growth. Most fruits/veggies are organic, little milk but what we drink is organic, organic yogurt, no beef, etc.
I wonder if our child would be around 50th percentile on growth charts from 1930s before all of the growth hormones?

If your child were in the 25th percentile
(and the charts were accurate), it would just mean that, out of 4 kids the same age, yours would likely be the smallest. Someone has to be.
The charts are not accurate, but don't concern yourself for a second about getting him into the 50th percentile of an accurate chart. If his genetics say he's healthiest at the 25th percentile, whatever you do to get him to another percentile would not be healthy.
We know our son is healthy and that's the most important thing. He's just thin. We have to make an effort not to let people show concern around him because it does get to him. He broke out in tears once when someone said that "don't you want to be a big boy" thing around him and he said "I'm little. Not big." We don't worry about his health, but there's this befuddling notion that being as average as possible in everything measurable is the best thing and it's not.

Wow, I thought it nearly impossible to identify Autism in
a 4 year old, but depression in a 5 month old.
BTW, my second daughter, born in 1981, was diagnosed Failure to Thrive when she was 10 months old. My father, an attorney, threatened to sue to hospital and doctor. Never heard another thing about it. Today, she is an RN, owns her own home and has a beautiful daughter of her own.

I'm guessing day care. It figures, little kids need to be with their loving parents; but today's economies force both parents to work so the kids are prisoners of the system, even babies are often in day care.

Has anyone thought about
the possibility of vaccines causing this? Of the tainted formula? Did they cross check to see what other things these children did or did not have in common?
I read a long time ago, but can't remember the country... but, they had a huge increase in diabetes after mandating HepB vaccinations, therefore stopped giving the shot altogether. But the good old US, thought, ah ha, we can get them ready for life long medications for diabetes, and starting giving the injection when the baby is only TWO HOURS OLD! Mother hasn't even had a chance to nurse and pass on the colostroum to the child!!! You do know the increase in diabetes in children has gone through the roof? Used to say was inherited, but no longer ANY connection to family history. Soooooo??????

My son was high strung at 5 months of age. I still have to take him out of loud restaurants at 4 yrs. old. It's called personality. And it's a life-long "condition".
I teach him things like how to politely use his words to ask someone to turn something off that's too loud for him. You know, skills he can use for the rest of his life. Who knew I was guilty of medical neglect for not "fixing" it right now.
