A New Architecture Of Global Governence

0 votes

Policy speech dated July 15, 2009;

Pascal Lamy, Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), gives an analytical speech on possible global governance changes in the post-crisis world. After underlining the significant role of the multilateral trading system, Lamy questions the "global" character of the new world. He argues that the elements of globalization such as trade, financial markets, investment, migration etc. will be shaped by public attitudes. According to Lamy, the solution lies in a "triangle of coherence" in which the G20, international organizations like the WTO and the United Nations cooperate.

This pretty much says it

This pretty much says it all:
"As we contemplate the different ways that the world economy may be affected by the crisis, it becomes clear why we need the multilateral trading system more than ever. Even if we believed that all crisis phenomena were cyclical and that we would soon be able to resume 'business as usual', we would still need a strong regime of international cooperation to exit the crisis. But when we add the strong likelihood of secular change - that policies and behavior in the financial sector will be modified to avoid a replay of the forces that generated the crisis, that ways of doing business may change, that new economic structures and patterns of exchange are evolving, and that public attitudes are likely to exert new influences on governments, this gives us a second reason for reinforced and more effective international cooperation."

So, do we need a new architecture of global governance? No, absolutely not - our sovereignty is far too important to us! However, a new architecture of global interaction may be just the ticket.

Tighten the chains that bind

Tighten the chains that bind nations to a common fate of sinking or swimming based on the actions of a few doesn't seem wise at this point. They whom washe their hands of responsibility for all that ails the global economic landscape shouldn't be rewarded by even more power over the fate of nations and people.
