Thanks to Libby for sending this video along. This is a response to the video, "Why We Need Government-Run Universal Socialized Health Insurance," which has recently been popular on the internets (147,000 views).

fire straw man
I hear this from every proponent of gov't healthcare and it is so ignorant. There is no Federal Fireman and if there was it would be insanely expensive, have layers and layers of waste and beuracracy and fail to put respond to the majority of the fires.
Fireman are services provided by incorporated cities and counties. They are funded by the taxes collected at the local level and a well run city gov't will usually have a surplus at the end of the year.

Problem with this and other "free market" arguments
They ignore the history that got us to where most of us have no option but being on an employer-provided plan. If the government hadn't caused the problem, we'd all be on private insurance plans, probably acquired when we were young, that we'd be able to stay on whether we got sick or stayed healthy. But the government destroyed that option for us. So shouldn't the government do something to resolve the matter? Socialized medicine isn't the answer, but neither is the fascist system that we have right now.
find a doctor who will barter with you
Aren't you assuming that we all want to be on health insurance here? As a doctor and a gardener, I'd rather take care of my family and friends and community through a combination of "pay it forward" and bartering. If I need care that I can't provide through my own education/skill, I'd much prefer trade apples for massages or whatever.
I concur...
Some of the points made in this video really do not fit- they are comparing really apples and oranges. And the whole bit about investors is just not really addressing the whole matter. Significant portions of the premiums you pay does go indeed to corporate fat cats and yes investors. However, increasingly each year more of these premiums and costs you pay are going to them every year. this whole bit about administrative costs is just nonsense. My question though is this- should humans be treated as a commodity? Because really that is happening with the current model we have. I personally don't agree with it. I am not sure if I agree with health insurance in general because of this. Moreover, if we do want to have this type of industry why are only a few of them in the market- shouldn't we allow for REAL competition without government influence and legislation? Why not just have hospitals and doctors deal with the patient directly? Get rid of the middleman? I wonder how that would work.
ignore?
didn't he mention some tax credit/law from 1946 that created/aided the creation of employer based health plans?
