Helping others: Please toot your own horn!

I've seen so many posts, in other forums, or quotes by low-life politicians that the only reason Libertarians, tea-baggers, right-wingers, conservatives don't want Government run Universal Healthcare is because we are stingy.
That we only care about ourselves and our immediate family, and we are otherwise uncaring, lazy jerks
I know for a fact that this is BS.
Personally, I think handing civic responsibilities over to the Government is the quick and easy cop-out. And that it's really the all these Hand-wringers that are the lazy ones.
So..What have you done for others? Did you donate time, money, services?
I know that a lot of you have..So toot your horn a little.
If I get a few posts, I'll write something in too.

Bump for Kibble
The local Humane Society is running out of kibble.
They deliver kibble to pet owners that have fallen on hard times.
So we're taking a couple of big bags down there this weekend.
Love them critters.

Homeless Man
Last Sunday, I was in the middle of a 200-mile return trip home, driving back from a visit with old friends from college, when I passed by a ragged looking man on the side of the road who had a cardboard sign that said, "Homeless."
I pulled over to the side of the road, walked over to him and give him a handful of cash, which amounted to about $120. The gratitude he expressed was worth much more than that. Though I did not help him out of need for gratitude.
The funny thing is, when I stopped again for gas, a few more miles down the road, there was a praying mantis perched on the one gas pump out of about 12 that I picked to use.
I have a picture from a couple of years ago of that was taken when I was visiting the same friends that I was visiting last weekend. I was sitting on a porch, and the picture was taken after a praying mantis had crawled up my back and perched itself on my shoulder.
Who Needs The Government? Not Us !
The following is a true story.
My wife and her sister are both home care providers.
My wife was working in a private facility when one of the wealthier homeward bound elderly persons hired her at $10. per hour for 24 hour private home care, in the lady's own home.
My wife and her sister worked out a schedule where they would each work a 12 hour shift, since most of the late night shift was spent sleeping, while the day shift consisted of the usual daily tasks.
Now the costs of a retirement home in our area, vary from about $3,000 per month to over $7,000 per month.
The elderly person was paying about $6,720 a month to my wife and her sister for the 24 hour care,,,,,without any deductions.
While caring for this person, my wife was offered another similar job, that she accepted. The family of the 2nd disabled person hired another care giver to help my wife and her sister, and the 3 of them rotated between the two disabled persons houses. My wife was off every 12 hours but her sister a single woman who lived with us when she wasn't working rotated between the two houses for about one year, saving her money.
Now $6720 X 2 = $13,440 divided by 3 = $4,480 per care giver per month.
Everybody was happy until.....the federal taxes were figured out at the end of the year. My wife owed over $6,000 in taxes despite our joint tax return { I was self employed and had many deductions } and her sister owed quite a bit more.
Her sister was so angry about the taxes she moved out of the country and hasn't come back in over 10 years.
The point is government is here to rob us of our earned income!
Oh by the way, since my wife and her sister didn't drive at the time I was the volunteer free taxi service to shuttle them around during this period, and my business suffered because so much time was spent driving.

Must toot my wife's horn...
Yesterday, my wife was approached by a young woman who asked for money to buy some food. This is not uncommon in Portland--Oregon has the second highest unemployment rate. Neither my wife nor I like to hand out money for fear it will be used for unhealthy things, so my wife offered to take the woman to a fast food place down the street and buy her some food. During the trip, my wife found out that the woman had a prescription for an infection. She was unable to afford the prescription (~$100), so my wife took her to Wal-Mart and paid for the prescription to be filled (it turned out to be $80 at Wal-Mart). While they were waiting for the prescription to be filled, my wife bought her some groceries that didn't need to be kept cold--the woman lived in a tent with her husband.
As a side note, I think hiring people to do work for you is charitable--even though it is not charity. For instance, since both my wife and I are employed, we hire a cleaner to clean our house once a week. Granted, we can clean our own house, but this way someone else gets a little help putting food on the table and we get a clean house. :)
If you study the historical pattern
universal health care has nothing to do with our well being.
It is another step toward collectivization and if you have been at the DP for more than a week you KNOW it.
You actually need ME to explain to you that the best way to control us is to make us DEPENDENT on the government?
In 1905 the federal government's contribution to the GDP was about 6%.
Today it is about 46%. Do you see a pattern?
Do you see that there are many posters here who "steer" the debate?
Do you see that the best way to deal with this control is to learn to divine the truth for yourself? Then, you will be free.
Why do you watch the media?
Why do you engage in the lie?
They are selling you down the river and have been for 100 years and you are telling me that you like it?
These people are immoral....you are actually so brainwashed that when they accuse YOU of being immoral you believe it?
A plant goes to the Barney Frank town hall with an Obama/Hitler picture.
Frank makes her look like an idiot. It hits the internet.
This was SCRIPTED.
Please learn the truth and tell it.
Stop engaging in this media "show."
They are grouping you and tagging you and brain washing you.
Stop helping them.

Not a bad idea to compile such a list
But no one in the MSM will acknowledge that the efforts of individuals and community groups can replace the government efforts (though I think they can).
Two years ago my friend lost his job and shortly after needed to renew his driver's license. In order to do this (to continue to legally have the ability to drive his car) he needed new glasses (Eye exam and new lenses). The bill was over $300, but I did this for him as a friend. I also had him living in my home for 6 months to afford him easier access to the city for jobhunting, as his family lives 40 miles away, not convenient to the local job market.
I see others posting about their blood donating, and yes I am a 2 galloneer at this time, but I am currently on deferral (due to melanoma 2 years ago) and cannot donate until next year.
I also give about $40 per month to my community YMCA as a payroll deduction.
That $40 gives me access to their pool (which I have never used yet) but only a meager 10% discount on any pay activities they offer, like summer programs for the kids.
I have also sat on the board of a local food Cooperative, eventually becoming the Board Chairman. The Coop did not survive, but I did my part while it was viable.
I have fixed (paid repair bill) of another friend's car when his transmission gave out. I cannot tell you how many "payday" loans I gave this fellow too... when he ran out of money before he ran out of month.
If we are counting political contributions here... RP got $100 last year, and Rand/Schiff each got $50 in the last week or so (money bombs).
I was a cub scouts leader for 5 years, ending about a decade ago.
Certainly there are others like me... and the stories are likely overwhelming if added up. This is my 2 cents.
donating...
i own a webhosting company and while I can't always help financially, so I donate free hosting to numerous charities, churches and even the boy scouts. If they are things I believe in, I will gladly do it to help. When I see friends struggling, I don't accept money for hosting their emails and blogs either. I don't make much from it, but my reward is my smile.

one thing I wanted to add..
When I help someone, they know I am looking after them and they will try hard to not ask for that help more than necessary. If I sense they aren't trying to better themselves, they know that I'll stop helping them.
When the government does it, there is no feeling of that 'guilt' of accepting help. It becomes deserved or even required.
Community is the best recipe for helping those who need it. The community will come together to help re-build a home after a fire, or help a family that loses a job or cook dinner for that single man that just got out of the hospital.
Government is the problem and never the solution.

"My reason to give your money is better than yours"
That's what big-government advocates try to tell us when they attempt to leverage these false-guilt accusations.
They believe themselves better at deciding the portion of your earnings you should get to keep for your family, and how much government must extract from you to serve their ever-expanding list of noble-sounding programs.
When the appeal of their lofty notions fails to persuade us, they then use demeaning terms to decry our motives for not giving in or giving up without a fight; hoping to put us in a self-defensive position.
It's been my life experience that liberty-lovers give the most freely to truly needy people and truly noble causes. Those who promote the inefficient redistribution of wealth by government often seem to squander their own money in other wasteful ways besides.
For my part, whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst and provide for it. - Patrick Henry
Money where ones mouth is...
I chair the board of a local non profit providing services to at risk and disadvantaged (mainly minority) youth. I give 1-2% of my net income to charity every month and my goal is to increase that to 10% in the next year it so.
If I was taxed less, I could give more.
I think socialism robs me of the opportunity to help my fellow man...literally denies me the ability to increase my Karma....or gain whatever spiritual and mental benefits there are to giving. (You should see the new documentary Happiness Is)
Giving of your resources has value.
Voting to take someone elses resources and give them to another has no value. (At least for you...you may feel selfless but is a sad illusion)
My wife met this young woman at a home
It was a home for young pregnant women.
The father of the child was out of the picture. Then the kid was born,
My wife kept telling me how smart she was, and what potential she had.
She knows I'm a sucker for these things. That, and stray cats and dogs.
So she started taking the girl to work with her, training her on Office software, and management. Then we helped her get enrolled in college. I drove her there at first. Then we matched her dollar for dollar to buy a used car. So far so good.

Think of an archery target
The small circle in the middle is you, your family and your closest friends. You would help these people in a heartbeat if someone got sick, or needed to borrow a hundred dollars, or a ride to the airport.
The second circle is people you know - acquaintances. They could be people at work, or school. You know their names and say hello - maybe even make small talk at parties. But if they got sick, would you help them? Maybe. If they needed money, would you lend it?
(I am not advocating any special behavior here; everybody follows their own conscience).
The point is, the further out in the circles you go, the more distance you have from those who need something.
Ron Paul suggested that the Federal Government should not be in the business of health care, nor education - for example. If he's right then it bounces down to the States and (in a perfect world) the people of the state decide what they want to do. From there it goes to the County, the local town or city.
Part of this mix is the religious and charitable organizations. Churches have been known to shelter the homeless, feed people via soup kitchens, and so forth. The Red Cross, Unicef, and (yes) even Fema, can help with disaster relief - usually.
The problem gets really thorny if a little kid needs a mitral valve replacement, and it costs a million bucks. Who is going to pay for it? Do we let the kid die? That's a tough call.
Evidence shows that rationing happens in all
systems. The question is who decides the rationing. Do people trust bureaucrats or politicians to decide based on group identity ( age, degree of urgency, responsible lifestyle, length of time waiting for intervention, etc.)?
Or do people trust individual donors, lay and healthcare professionals, and private charitable and civic organizations which traditionally provided care in America?
For me there's no doubt: I trust the people to voluntarily support each other, as individuals and voluntary organizations. It is the only way to put "care" back into caregiving.

I volunteered for 6 years at about 40 hours/month while having a full time job mentoring 7-12 graders. I believe government programs that take care of the needy deprive us of our humanity by taking care of the people that WE should be helping.
I don't mentor officially anymore but I do still keep in contact and help many of the youth and their families. In fact, I am putting one up in a spare bedroom because of her family problems.
I spend 9 months a year on a
I spend 9 months a year on a barge in the gulf of mexico to support my family. So why on earth would I possibly want to work another whole month for free? As it is I work 3 months out of the year for free and the government takes a third of my income at least. If these liberals wanted healthcare they need to do what people like us do move to find a job and get one. For years I have seen these useless eaters refuse to do my job because they didn't want to be away from their families. These people complained about being poor all the time but didn't want to be inconvenienced to relieve their status. There was plenty of jobs out there at one time like trucking or merchant marines but oh no I don't want to be away from the wife and kids....
I have also seen people that would loose jobs or couldn't get jobs because they didn't want to stop smoking dope. I can't understand people like that especially if they have kids...
Another point I wouldn't have a problem with government insurance if everyone paid into the system like another sales tax but I'll be damned if I am going to pay another 6k a year so some lazy or irresponsible failure can have FREE healthcare...
I don't understand why on earth these people can not take care of themselves and need government to help them take care of their own responsibilities...
I might sound stingy but I
I might sound stingy but I am not because I have gave plenty of things away. I usually give away stuff especially if someone has a need and I don't need it anymore. I once gave a friend of a friend a car which he drove for over 6 years because He was really poor and needed rides a lot. I have also paid my own mothers bills for over 6 months when she was out of work. I don't have a problem with charity because charity makes You feel good about helping people in need. Now the government taxing me to give it to someone else is not charity. I personally think government funded charity is THEFT because I did not gives these thieves permission to tax me for it. The worst part of our tax system is it equates money with standard of living. If You make over 100k a year You must live well and You can afford higher taxes right? What happens if You have cancer and Your medical bills are 5k a month? What if You are supporting a family member going through a hard time? These liberals asking for more taxes never look at someone elses condition and can only look at themselves which makes them very self centered in my book....
Here is a idea how bout We treat everyone the same and give everyone the same rights and possibilities. Oh but then again We couldn't do that because Lord forbid if the welfare machine shut down.
I like your thinking here
but must point out that medical bills are largely deductible. Housing someone for an extended time would make them a dependent (if they lived with you for more than 6 months of the year). Those conditions would qualify you for some tax relief (another personal deduction and then medical bills), though would not come close to compensating you in full. Even so, at that income level, about one third of the costs would be recoverable in a reduced tax bill.
It's a Scam
The do-gooders buy votes by promising other people your money. The love of giving away other peoples money is the root of all evil.
The "liberals" play good cop and "help" by encouraging people to be lazy and poor. The "conservatives" play bad cop and "help" by redistributing wealth to defense contractors to pay for the killing of people you never heard of and who have never heard of you.

Excuse me
Although I will agree that the "conservatives" started the current conflicts we find our selves in, they are not in power and the shenanigans continue. All I can say about any of this is that... at least welfare 'helps' people. If you call the handout help.
Toot, toot.
My household spends thousands of dollars and many hours a year on charitable activity in our own town, on people and organizations that we know. And we do help people we know with their medical bills as we can. I'll just leave it at that. Just a quiet toot to let the crazy liberals know that we beat them all to pieces at generosity with one of our hands tied behind our backs.
Right on!
That's what i am talking about.
i will not be "guilted" into the shotgun approach to helping others.
by that I mean taxed until I'm broke. I like the targeted approach.
My money, my assistance, going towards helping someone else, with no overhead, no administrator salaries..(united way anyone?)..
Actually, The United Way is what got me thinking..Everywhere I have ever worked. They do these United Way campaigns. Chatting you up, bothering you daily..following you down the hallway until you donate..Never! I never donate to them..

Even though,
I am in no position to give money, I have always given my time. I have started giving a buck or two when i can to people I suspect need it. One thing I have never seen before was women asking for help. Within the last two years I have noticed many females in town begging. There is one that works a particular street corner who looks like she could be a stripper.
I noticed her one weekend crossing the street. She had a pleasant, at ease look on her face when a woman crossing the street in the opposite direction handed her some money. Later during the week I noticed she was working the corner with a sign saying "Homeless, Hungry Please anything will help. She must be making more then most considering 50% of the guys passing her would want to date her based on how cute she looks. I would not be inclined to give her help as I suspect she is doing way better then me but I would love to ask her a bunch of questions. This is something I have never in my life seen and I am not talking about a street hooker. I am talking about a pretty young healthy girl who decided that begging was an option. From what I see women clearly do much better then men when it comes to begging.
That's a sobering story.
That's a sobering story.

I'm stingy?
I've been economically "poor" my entire life. If they mean I'm stingy when it comes to protecting my personal freedoms and those of my countrymen (and women) they're correct. That stinginess also includes a strong belief in the liberty of all life on this planet because nobody has any right to force their will upon anyone else.
"Personally, I think handing civic responsibilities over to the Government is the quick and easy cop-out."
Exactly.
I've been self-employed for almost 12 years and was partially self-employed years before that (ever since I walked out of High School because I realized I was being trained to be used and discarded)
I don't want or need the Governments help because I see no reason to proceed through life without evolving, and they routinely inhibit natural progress. The best way for me to grow is to get my hands "dirty" and delve into things that stimulate my mind, enrich my lfe, and make me sweat. I want to work and I want to succeed, but my idea of success seems far removed from the dictates of prescribed American values.
Even though I rarely have money I donate what I can frequently to organizations I believe in, and while I haven't had the opportunity to assist anyone in distress lately I've done so many times in the past.
One of the reasons I choose to live the way I do is because it adds flexibility to my life so I'm available when called upon for just about anything.
I like people. I like being alive and I like the planet on which I live.
What I don't like is imposed force and it seems the "lawmakers" (formerly "representatives") feel the need to impose upon me forcefully in an avalanche of ways.
You're Not Only Stingy...

Welcome to the club!
I'm self employed, too, since 1996. I love to fly by the seat of my pants. Only way to go. Best part is on sunny summer afternoons I can grab a six pack and head up the river for some drinkin' and swimmin' and singin' with the radio at the top of my lungs. Thursday looks primo...
