WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal prosecutors hit Pfizer Inc. with a record-breaking $2.3 billion in fines Wednesday and called the world's largest drug maker a repeating corporate cheat for illegal drug promotions that plied doctors with free golf, massages, and resort junkets.

And not one single idiot out there stops to wonder why this sort of thing is a problem only in industries where the government ends up paying; like drugs, military procurement and public works projects. Never heard of any chewing gum maker being prosecuted for taking convenience store clerks on expensive junkets, and neither have, I bet, anyone else.

This entire non issue would be completely moot, if drugs were sold like any other product. Not by a gang of self anointed overlords permitted to, at the barrel of a gun, tell the rest of us what and how much to buy, and what we have to pay for it.
