Please excuse Junior from attending the political indoctrination speech... help me write a letter to the teacher!

Here's what I've come up with so far:
To whom it may concern,
Please excuse my son/daughter from viewing the presidential address to the students.
I consider this unprecedented action by the White House to be a usurpation of the family and do not wish my child be exposed to a political speech whose content I am unaware of.
I prefer that my child receive his/her guidance and political values in the home rather than in the schools.
Thank you for your understanding.
Too short? I'm thinking these are public school teachers after all so I don't want to get too philosophical... it's like reading Shakespeare to your dog.
I'd be interested in any other pointers you would think important.

All for naught... didn't even show it in any school here....

I would suggest everyone with school aged children to not
subject them to government indoctrinated schools but rather offer them home schooling education which is learning hands on self-sufficiency in all aspects of life. Many curriculum's and support groups are available nationwide to help you get started. I know of one school which has one administrator. The students built the school, teach one another (K thru 12+), make their meals, do their laundry, clean and maintain the buildings and grounds, garden, etc. They graduate with real life skills and liberty thinking minds. Bumped for this fine suggestion. ;)
Our local school
is now requiring a parent consent signed letter in order for the student to watch the speech...For students who return a "NO" response, other activities will be provided. This is also negative however as it separates the students into "groups"
Your letter sounds great...short, sweet, and to the point. However, I would point out that (depending on the school/teacher) there may be some subtle repercussions for you child. Sometimes, it is just better to take action (keep your child home) without stating your reasons. Simply inform them that you are sorry your child was absent, but the family had a "personal crisis" (which has now been solved) and leave it at that.
: ).....leaves them wondering.
I would doubt a educator would be foolish enough to bring...
...that kind of attention to themselves by targeting non-Obama students.
And yes, my district is one of those places where my RP bumperstickers are NOT typical. However, I work closely enough to my children that any unexplained harassment or singling out by a teacher would result in my wife or myself setting them down for a good talking-to.
Besides, dissent is cool - especially in school. Once other kids see my kids and many others, it seems) opting out, then it's time for RP's message of liberty and individual freedom to be rooted.
You miss out on all that by staying home.
I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...

It's certainly your choice
I stated it was a good letter if you choose to make a stand. I simply suggested to consider both sides and to "choose your battles wisely". Actually, it would be your child's battle as well as your own as they are the one who goes to school and is the active participant. I'm sure from you apparent strength, however, that you have raised very strong children.
I would point out that "educators" are not all as ignorant as you think. As you stated, most educators are not stupid enough to obviously single out, or "harrass" you child. That's why I used the word "subtle".
Oh, little things, like influencing which student gives a class speech, or who's paper is read aloud/displayed, grading subjective papers, compliments versus just being ignored, teacher nominations/recommendations for honors, etc. etc. And you would never even know...or would have no evidence that correlated the two. (action vs Obama attendance). Don't think it can't be managed. I know from experience.
I'm not saying it WILL happen, simply that it should be a consideration. You know your school much better than I do.
Good luck on whichever choice you make. You asked for opinions on the letter, I just gave mine.
I wouldnt send that letter
It makes you sound ignorant and/or a liar.
Do you know what "unprecedented" means? You do understand that Reagan used to do this with children and preached about the virtues of low taxes at the same time right? Then there was Bush, Clinton, Bush II...
That means it is NOT unprecedented...
Talking about education to kids in school is far less political then going on about taxes...
You may want to think things through before making those kinds of statements.
What is your beef with Obama anyway? Last time I check it was the Republicans that treated Ron Paul like crap and cheat and lied at every turn to keep him down....
Thanks for that interesting definition!
Now all those who didn't know what "unprecedented" means can thank you and move on...
However, if you can't see the difference between a sitting president visiting a classroom for a photo op and a nationwide address to every school child in the country (sans parental filtration) then you are either not paying attention or deliberately downplaying the scope of what he is attempting.
What is my beef with Obama? You think I don't like Obama because he was mean to Ron Paul?
In one of your own posts (you were defending Obama again....) "Ron Pauls message has never been about Obama. It is about the overall overreach of the centralized government..."
The central government is reaching into our children's classroom right now.
Care to continue to defend your man?
I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...
I may not know the truth, but I know when I'm being lied to...
Beef with Obama? Uh, do you mean
besides the fact that his entire agenda is robbing and killing same as Bush?

White House Puts Parents In an Awkward Position
Moms and dads who don’t think that it is appropriate for the president to address students shouldn’t be put in the situation where they will be forced to remove their students from school during the first day of school.
Six, seven, and eight-year-old kids shouldn't be put in a position where they have to say that a particular president is inspiring and such a wonderful person. Next Tuesday, the opening day for many schools across the country, President Obama will give a speech to elementary and secondary students across the country. There is a reason why no president has commanded the time of America's school children in the past to make them listen to the president as part of their school day.
Could you imagine the outrage if the president requested time to address adults during their work day even if it were simply to encourage them to work hard and be productive for the good of the nation? But why would they be upset? The very act of listening to a politician is a political act. It is no more appropriate than requiring that Americans to listen to a political ad. Some adults simply don't want to waste their time listening to a politician or they might simply dislike that person. Others might not be political and not care enough to watch such an address the politician. But this is less objectionable for adults than kids – kids are much more impressionable.

It's not your job to educate the ignorant
educators, unless you want to. Just don't let them make this a wedge issue between you and your child. If your child is on board with your position and agrees it's worth possibly being singled out that's one thing.
But if it's all your choice and the kid would be embarrassed, or feel he/she was missing out, proceed with caution. Your most important job is to guide your child's development and assist him/her to find the truth in life. You can't dictate that to him any more than the school can.
But if the child goes to their establishment environment every day among kids all propagandized, that can be a hard path for a very independent-minded child. the lambs fit into the system best. Consider homeschooling, there are many creative ways to approach it legally. Lots of online resources and information.

We understand that Arne Duncan of the U.S. Dept. Of Education has encouraged you, your teachers, and students to join in watching the President deliver an historic address on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Ed.gov has also provided classroom activities in connection with the President's speech.
We are writing to inform you that if you choose to air the President's address, our child, ______________, will not be in attendance.
We, the Parents, are keeping him home in an act of civil disobedience. We wish to make it clear to you, your staff, other parents, and (most importantly) our child, that we do not support this President or his his radical leftist agenda.
Please know that this will not be a "day off" for our child. We are going to spend some time on the following subjects:
U.S. History
Our Constitution - Divinely inspired charter of freedom or flawed document that limits the Government's ability to dispense justice?
Economics
Stimulus - What does a Trillion dollars look like? Also, how does a country get out of debt by borrowing more?
Science
How is man made global warming producing cooler temperatures and growing icecaps? Also, who would profit most from Cap & Trade? (hint: _________-D)
Social Studies
What type of government tries to make everyone equal by "spreading the wealth around"?
After lunch we will take a field-trip the WW2 D-Day Museum in New Orleans to recognize the sacrifices of America's fallen heroes and celebrate the last time Americans fought against fascism.
Our son, __________ will be prepared to make up any classwork he has missed. We expect he will be given an opportunity to make up any tests as well.
If you wish to discuss our position on this issue please don't hesitate to call. If you would like to know why we are resisting Obama, his Czars, and the Progressive movement , the following resources will provide a starting point.

Thank you in advance for understanding the difficult position the President has put us in by attempting to interject himself into our children's lives in the classroom setting. I hope that MJH will show tolerance of our capitalist, conservative views by allowing us to "opt out" of this, and future addresses.

You can also give your
You can also give your son/daughter a couple of niacin tablets to take about ten minutes before the speech. It will create what is called a niacin flush. Red face and itchy all over plus very slight fever. Lasts long enough to get a nurse to confirm a fever and get sent home. Works great to get sent home from your job also. All symptoms are gone in just about fifteen minutes. I did this quite often when I was working at a meat plant, usually on days that for some strange reason I had "accidentally" taken all my fishing gear to work with me.

screw it. call it sick it's easier
Let your kid go to school.
I'm not sure if it is a good idea to keep information from our kids one way or another. I would let my kid go to school, while reviewing the information myself and then have a heart to heart discussion about its merits and views both for and against.
I'd rather teach my kids to be able to evaluate what they are told in a constructive logical mannar and come up with his/her own opinions based on reasoned thought. That way I could trust my kids out in the world when I'm not around. Besides, my kids may eventually teach me something by reasoned discussion some day.
I'd rather not let the precedent be set...
This speech might be Ok.
The next one might not.

This is a wonderful chance
This is a wonderful chance to take the day off work, and spend time with your children. Take them to the zoo, a museum, or just talk to them. The time together is more valuable than any day in the camps anyway. If my son was of school age, this is likely what I would do. If a note is necessary, I think it should be polite, to the point, and remind the teacher who the parent/guardian is and who they serve - US.
