It's not unusual for presidents to visit schools when promoting policies, as George W. Bush did when he passed No Child Left Behind. Mostly it's been considered a privilege and a learning opportunity to have an important political figure speak to children. Political candidates often use schools as a backdrop for their education pitches. And it won't be the first time teachers have turned on a TV so students can witness important political moments. The notion that letting children hear the president speak is worthy of fear seems antithetical to America's democratic values. Moreover, the subject matter should be something that people of all political stripes agree on: education should be prized, working hard should be valued, and staying in school helps kids getting ahead. Have we really gotten to a point where parents are afraid of having the president impart those messages? It's been one crazy summer.

I am all for the President speaking........BUT
I will agree with some of the others that our children and grandchildren are so knowledgeable on the truth behind Obama's agender that they will not be influenced but there are children that are not and it could just influence them in the wrong way, I feel the govt. is trying to get our kids to think "their" way and become followers and not leaders that think for themselves. If his speech is going to be just a pep talk as we experienced from our principal at the beginning of school that is ok except a waste of taxpayer dollars, let the principal do the little pep talk. but if he is trying to influence the children to be more accepting of his policy then he should not be allowed. I am a little concerned with the way he is on TV, etc ALL the time, I cannot remember a president that craved the attention he does.

The ridiculous over-reaction to this non-controversial "stay in school" speech is exactly what the left thrives on because it points out the hysteria of the right. It makes these self-proclaimed "conservatives" irrelevant.
Good, I'm all for it. Let's make the "progressives" irrelevant, too, then we'd actually be getting somewhere. That should always be the focus.
People who associate themselves with the RP movement but get caught up in this nonsense are taking themselves way too seriously. If your kids can't be exposed to a relatively harmless bit of propaganda from a self-important politician, how are they going to survive the rest of their lives?

Our county school system here
has decided to take the opposite approach of many school systems.
Our school board decided that the only students who will watch Obama's video are students who bring permission slips in from their parents that they are to watch Obama's video.
All other students will not be shown the video.
So, for a student to see it, he must bring in a signed request that he be shown the video, instead of having to bring in an excuse to be exempted from it.
This puts the onus on the parent to allow it, and no other students will see it.

WE, the parents have the responsibility and right to educate our children the way WE see fit (whether its public school, private school, or homeschool), and no one else - including teachers and presidents! WE "empower" teachers to teach our kids...we can also take that power away, by removing our kids from school.

this day, I have not received either) of such attempts to teach our children something other than the required material. Istead, we have superintendants here in Arizona who is telling parents that they will not be able to "opt-out" tuesday! directions. You apparently think government-run schools are valid. I consider them merely indoctrination centers offering substandard "education."
The words of Obama's speech will be insignificant. the harm is that he's presented to the children as a wise leader due respect. Yes, we differ on that too. I think respect has to be earned by wise leadership or example, not be winning a popularity contest which is all the presidential campaigns are.
It is very harmful for children to be told to respect a warmonger, an ignorant spendthrift, a robber of their futures, one who has shown no respect for the civil rights of all Americans.
Public school teachers are mostly establishment shills who know little and care less. As a college student, I was bounced out of a student teaching position because I stood silently during the morning pledge of allegiance to the flag, rather than reciting it when the kids were required to do so.
Any teacher who thinks and acts independently without compromising his/her values will not stay in the system. Nor should the children.

And the health department is going to want to know where he is putting the guts and scales. And if he dares to try and sell any surplus fish, then he will need a business license and a tax number and will need to comply with zoning and building codes if he is in city limits. What could be wrong with the President of the United States giving a first day of school pep talk to the nation's schoolchildren, telling them to do the right thing by studying hard?
What is wrong with people? Honest, what is it? Are conservatives so angry and paranoid that they can't even be minimally patriotic? Obama might lose on health care, but any conservative movement that's so off its nut that it politicizes an act of basic civic upbuilding like this has no chance of ever winning the confidence of the Normal American community.

Ask why Bush and company gave telecommunications companies immunity for warrentless, illegal wiretapping of US citizens and why Obama can't produce a valid birth certificate. Google the "Georgia Guidestones" and consider the research which shows that AIDS is a lab created disease which was intentionally given with the intention to reduce populations among Africans and homosexuals. Ask yourself what happened to the trillions of dollars in bailout money, why FEMA has constructed concentration camps all over the U.S., and basically why we should believe ANYTHING this evil, corrupt, dishonest, and abominable government says. Having our children REQUIRED to listen to an adress by Obama or Bush is the religious equivalent of having our children being required to listen to a "pep talk" from Satan. They want most of us dead and the rest enslaved, and once you see that you may have a clue why we are just a little bit upset. The most "patriotic" and "American" thing we can do is to dissent and think for ourselves. Patriotism is not blind service to a man just becaue he is called "president". If Stalin or Hitler were president would you think it o.k. for them to give your kids a little "pep talk"? Why not? It's not WHAT he is doing...it is WHY and HOW he is doing it.
Motives are always more important than actions.
If Obama wanted to encourage the students he could do it in one of his "Address the Nation" speeches and ask that the children watch along with their parents. He could accomplish the "noble goal" you claim he is offering, while respecting people's rights with their children in the process.

I find this controversy pretty disrespectful to the office of the president. If George W. Bush had planned a speech and there had been this much uproar, I would be saying something similar. Obama has every right to address the kids and I wish that we could chill and listen to what he has to say and encourage our kids to think for themselves.
This is a message that our kids need to hear and Obama is probably the perfect person to deliver that message. He's the leader of the nation and someone the kids respect. I agree with Education Secretary Arne Duncan it's been way too long since a president has addressed the kids.
