Here's the Prez's back to school speech
The President: Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.
I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

Here are 11 reasons why Obama's speech to school kids is bad ...
by Lew Rockwell that make sense to me: (http://www.lewrockwell.com/rozeff/rozeff310.html)
"There are very good reasons to object to Obama’s speech. I’ll sum up the ones that bother me. There are no doubt others, but I have made no attempt to research them and find out what others are thinking on this matter.
1. The speech is beyond the President’s constitutional powers.
2. The President is supporting a national role in education, which also is unconstitutional.
3. The President is not supporting his oath of office, so he is conveying an anti-constitutional message to children.
4. The President is crossing a boundary between the political and social spheres. That boundary is in place in order to control government power and maintain a healthy free society.
5. The President is augmenting national power and influence.
6. The President is starting a new precedent that has dangerous implications.
7. The President’s speech cannot possibly be non-political. The very act itself is politically in furtherance of government and an enhanced government role.
8. The President also leads his party, and that fact may influence children.
9. The President may have an undue influence over children due to his position and power.
10. Will fairness considerations lead to equal time for opposition leaders?
11. Presidential access to communications is dangerous enough without extending it to youth."
Dangerous precedent
Thanks for posting this. I think the speech had good messages within it just as I expected it would. I knew it would be feel good and act as the thin edge of the wedge to implement a Federal/administrative propaganda program on a regular basis to our children. Watch for more and increasing incidents of this - and the message will surely change in its mission to how youth can help the government and how to undermine parents and families authority and guidance. The fact that the speech was implemented with little advance warning and no dialogue from parents told me everything I needed to know about this propaganda.
.
I had actually written my view for someone before I registered on this site about this issue
I can type it up if anyone is still interested
it's actually much like Lew Rockwell's tho not as precise

Don't be afraid to think for yourself
Let me clear the air. I merely said that I didn't think the content of his speech was as bad as others thought it was. An opinion. I thought we were allowed free speech in here. I also, expressed concern that the "speeches" might continue increasingly and contain material that is intended to "indoctrinate" towards socialism. I will definately be watching closely. I encouraged others to read the speech not because I was promoting it. I just couldn't understand having a "stance" against something without knowing what it says. I welcome others opinions and input. But to immediately make me out to be some Obama mole or a traitor to the liberty movement for not wanting to join your lynching party is pretty ridiculous. Not to allow someone to have a different opinion and then calling THEM a socialist. Isn't that like the Commie calling the free thinker RED. DP has become a scary place with conspiracy and fear running amuck.
Aye.
A lot of folks got REALLY worked up over it-- I personally don't understand why. I'm of the opinion that the speech is rather innocuous... and I can't understand why it became such a big deal so quickly-- I guess the news cycle ran out of car chases.
At any rate, while I'm not up in arms over it, I don't see why they'd waste 15 minutes of class time on it. I agree with the Republican Congressman who said something to the effect of "Stick it on You Tube, and let kids go watch it if they want it, don't force people to waste class time."
15 minutes of Math, or History, or English instruction is worth infinitely more than a pep talk from the president.
The prep work
I was listening to some talk radio show tonight when I had to run to the store for a few things...So Im sitting in the parking lot..and this guy calls in...talks about his wife being a teacher...and the meno she got about Obamass visiting schools...
It seems the schools..some by force if they dont want a major budget cut..are making the kids write letters to Obamass telling him how proud they are of him..how they hope healt care is past so they will be able to go to good doctors..and how they all promise to serve him.
The kids are all made to learn the history of Obamass with of course all the lies and bs that goes with it...Songs where..it seems..written about him and the children will be singing them before and after the broadcast.
The older students...age 12 and up..will be ask to (forced really or face a bad grade and God knows what else) to sign a pledge to his new government!...
I just sat there for a moment....glad my daughter was out of school and my g/son isnt in yet.
Freedom is another way to God...A corrupt government is a straight way to hell.
I believe in Hope & Change..I Hope the government will Change

Hey Obama, It Ain't America No More
Remember the video clip of the guy on school grounds with a poster and the cop tells him to put away the poster or he'll arrest him for anything (the cop) wants?
Then the guy says, "this is America," and the cop says "It ain't no more." Some guy on the sidewalk starts talking about how there is no freedom of speech in a school zone.
Maybe somebody should hire that cop to knock on Obama's door.

tend to fade. Here's a reminder.
"Parental control of child rearing, especially education, is one of the bulwarks of liberty. No nation can remain free when the state has greater influence over the knowledge and values transmitted to children than the family."

Awesome quote, thanks for
Awesome quote, thanks for sharing it.
Below someone asked what was objectionable.
The first thing is his attempt to endear himself to my child, and manipulate public opinion through the children. Disney has been doing it to great success for decades, so I guess this administration does learn something from the private sector after all.
Now I will break down the speech and the various problems with it:
"I’ve talked about your teachers’ responsibility for inspiring you, and pushing you to learn."
[I teach my daughter that there is only one person responsible for herself, and that is her, in education as well. This contradicts me.]
"I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track"
[It is not the president who dictates my responsibilities, no matter how great it sounds.]
"I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working where students aren’t getting the opportunities they deserve."
[Anyone who believes it is the government's job to educate our children, please raise your hand right now. What, no one here? This flies in the face of everything I teach my daughter.]
"all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers;"
[Their responsibility is to go to school and listen to their teachers, regardless of what is being taught? He does dull it down my throwing parents and grandparents in as an afterthought.]
You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military? You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers. You can’t drop out of school and just drop into a good job.
[3 of the 7 jobs listed are government jobs. One of them, I consider to be a hired murderer, and another to be a paid bully. But he calls them "good" jobs.]
You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free.
[Social studies and history to not teach critical thinking. They teach heavily propagandized versions of these subjects. More free? By instituting social programs to fix all of the mentioned problems?]
"if you quit on school – you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country."
[Ask not what your country and can do for you, but what you can do for you country. lol.. I am not raising my child to be a cog in a government machine. This flies in the face of my libertarian teachings.]
"Some of you might not have those advantages. Maybe you don’t have adults in your life who give you the support that you need"
[Yep, give the kids another reason to disrespect those who are busting their asses for them.]
"That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school."
[School is not education. Some of our greatest minds were drop outs. And if the teacher is teaching nonsense, I want my child to talk back to them.]
I could actually keep going... But this is long and the point is simple. Stay the hell away from my kid!

I especially took notice at this little tid-bit:
"If you don't do that - if you quit on school - you're not just quitting on yourself, you're quitting on your country."
That's some ultimatum for a kindergartner (my son is in kindergarten)! Kinda like, if you don't pay your voluntary taxes, you will lose everything and go to jail!
And it amazes me that there are simpathizers/crybabies here (freedom-fighter) who lays down stupid challenges and crys to us to show him what's wrong with the speech! Where did you go freedom-fighter?

But... that's actually good advice.

I suppose no one ever told you in your extensive life that responses to vague insults are not given props so much based on their source as their content.
I would say it was a nice try... but it really wasn't. Put more effort into it next time.

No really. You don't know the story behind my signature.
It's that simple.

Really!
Please explain how making a child feel guilty if they can't finish school for some reason - or in your president's words "quitting" - as "good advise".

Because guilt can be a good motivator.
If you want to be an engineer you need to learn physics and math!
If you want to be a chemist you need to learn chemistry and math!
If you want to be a doctor you need to learn biology and organic chemistry!
You know what all those things have in common? You learn them all in school!
(cue evidence of "political spin" on math, physics, and chemistry...)
CHA-CHING!
CHA-CHING!
Why do you need government school to learn those things?
Really, did you get lost on your way to the DailyKos?

I think freedomfighter is gone, sobbing into his Obama pillow
That little piece of "advice" just may stay with the children when their parents decide enough's enough and pull them out for home schooling. The child will feel guilty and sad because The President told him it would be wrong to "quit."
Why would Obama even want
kindergarteners to think about quitting. Don't they have enough on their plate during their first week/first day of school without thinking, oh, some kids quit?
Yup, and after they hear it from Obama, there gonna here
it again from a man or woman they just met called their teacher. Then they'll hear it again in the principals newsletter. Then they'll see it on all the "don't quit" posters plastered around the hallways. Off to a great start for these little ones.
