Farmers sell wives after crops fail
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/farmers-sell-wi...
North Indian farmers are selling their wives to survive, it has been revealed.
Left without money due to failing crops, debt-ridden farmers in Bundelkhand, Uttar Pradesh, have reportedly been selling their wives to money lenders for Rs 4,000 - 12,000 (£50-150).
The more beautiful the woman, the higher the price that she fetches, it was claimed.
The deals are allegedly being settled on a legal stamp paper under the heading "Vivaha Anubandh" meaning Marriage Contract. Once the new "husband" is tired of the woman, she is allegedly sold to another man.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) is now sending a team to investigate the reports.
Girija Vyas, chief of the NCW, said: "It is awful and unbelievable that it still happens in the country, and that too in Uttar Pradesh where the chief minister is a woman.
"We are sending a team to find out the details and have asked for the report within 24 hours."
She added that the commission had also written a letter to the state's chief minister.
One of the victims said: "My husband sold me to another man for Rs 8,000 (£100) only. My buyer took me to the court to make our wedding look legal. During the trip I got the chance to escape."
In most cases, the women are illiterate and cannot read what is written in the "contract".

This should be brought up to the Rothchilds.
They have invested a lot of their fortune into the manufacturing and farm sectors in India. Is this a result of their actions?

CORPORATE
Lenders To Meet NM Rothschild Today On DPC Revival
Sanjay Jog
Mumbai, Aug 18: An empowered committee comprising Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI), ICICI and State Bank of India (SBI) would meet leading consultants NM Rothschild on Tuesday to take stock of the situation of Dabhol project revival. NM Rothschild & Sons (India) managing director Munesh Khanna, who had returned from his official trip aboard, is expected to make a presentation to the Indian lenders on Tuesday.
The meeting assumes importance as the IDBI-led consortium, with an exposure of over Rs 6,200 crore in the now-fallen Dabhol Power Company (DPC), has already sought two months extension till September 8 from the Bombay High Cour to submit a comprehensive report on the revival of Dabhol phase-I (658 mw) which has been closed since May 29, 2001.
The meeting is also crucial since the beleaguered DPC has approached the Supreme Court with a plea that Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) be restrained from passing any order on the resumption of Dabhol phase-I power by Maharashtra State Electricity Board. Incidentally, IDBI had fully supported MSEB’s petition seeking MERC’s approval for restarting offtake of Dabhol phase-I power at the per unit tariff of Rs 2.80 at 83 per cent plant load factor.
Institutional sources told FE that IDBI-led consortium, which has roped in NM Rothschild for carrying out a report on the revival of Dabhol phase-I and completion of Dabhol phase-II (1,444 mw), would like to be updated. Further, the IDBI-led consortium would also like to know the progress made by NM Rothschild on its mandate for the preparation of a tender for the sale of Dabhol assets.
The Belgium-based Tractabel, which has been appointed by NM Rothschild as its technical consultant, had already carried out a Dabhol plant visit. According to Tractabel’s preliminary report, $15 million would be needed for the revival of Dabhol phase-I. It had emphasised the need for the active involvement of GE, which has 10 per cent stakes in the beleaguered DPC, in the recommissionning of Dabhol phase-I. GE has supplied 9FA turbines for the troubled DPC project. However, Tractabel is believed to have opined that the involvement of Bechtel is not necessary in the Dabhol revival process.

I think we should not get on our moral high horse about this.
Sadly and perhaps ironically, it probably is the best thing for the women, that is if the woman are to live on and not starve to death. Perhaps the woman's own choices are so limited....we just do not know the situation.
What should concern you and me is the children. If human history and human evolution is any guide to us, we may realize their fate is most likely death. Our warm charitable action, should go there.
Question: Have you read this wonderful and amazing and shockingly original book? "Mother Nature: Maternal Instincts and How They Shape the Human Species", by Sara Hrdy. You can find it at amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Mother-Nature-Maternal-Instincts-Speci...

I don't think anyone is
passing judgment are is riding a "moral high horse". It just makes me appreciate what I have and what I might do if I was faced with the same dilemma. I think it is natural to think what would your options be if faced with such things.

Monsanto.
Evil Inc.
Monsanto Geneticaly Engineered crops
I wonder if these are the farmers that were duped into taking out loans to buy the so called better Monsanto Crops that are non reproducing hybrids so that they end up with no seed stock left over.

Thanks for bumping this eye opening article - it makes one see the problems we face today in a different light.

Wow, that
is sad. Hmmm, maybe those women would be better off without the fellows and start a woman's group of farm women so they wouldn't be sold like lives stock. The women could pool their resources and work together for survival. Just an idea.

Thank you sweet soul*))
the first bump is so important to keep the post "alive"...
I agree these women should pool their resources together and work in some self run community.

"pool thier resources together"...
Amateur sociobiologist/anthropologist (that I think I am) would point out to you the fact that their resource may indeed be that they are mature females, able to give birth. Next to that value comes their addition to household/farm labor. Together, the price of $100 is the equivalent of paying a year's wages.....in that famine stricken place. Notice also it is advancement for the women, NOT the men. The poor farmer who cannot grow his crops cannot afford the wife nor feed her or her children. Indeed, it may very well be the majority of farmer women saying they wish to be with a better more successful farmer who lives in a better rainier area. The poor farmer just gets a years pay, no children, no wife to help, and the chance that "next year may be better".
So may I remind everyone, that emotionally speaking, we do not know how the women feel about this... not you, not I, ... the article take the assumed Victim, and indeed perhaps SHE was but others where not. So we do not know collectively how ALL the woman feel themselves about being "sold", for being "sold" just may be a big advancement up.
Just 100 years ago woman in China took great pride in the Pride Price paid to be 2nd or 3rd or even the honorable position of 4th wife. Being a wife meant that one's children were to be born, fed, educated, and carry on.... being the consort, a woman could not expect her children to live or live better than her station. We in the West are not so very different. We watch on TV as the multi-millionaire Hugh Hefner lives with his 3 girlfriends in the same mansion, and they all seem so delighted with their good fortune to be "hefs girl". As i speak, the owner of a dozen car dealerships is having lunch with his wife and his mistress together. His wife and mistress of 9 years will then go shopping together and he will go check out an industrial lot of several acres to park his excess cars on. So, we are not so different is my point and we should not race to judgment.
And finally, let me say that human "love" is a product of evolution, both biologically and culturally. Human societies have long since solved the problem of the difference in value between Males and Females with Females being "worth" MORE than males. Males being the dispensable ones. While baby boys and girls are born at a perfect ratio of 1 to 1 (with some minor aberrations here and there), the competition for females is intense. The competition is not for (sorry to be rudely blunt) the vagina though street slang all over the world says its so, the competition is for access to wombs that are ripe. The competition amoung women is for access to men who have resources, and those men are always in short supply.
Above is a tragic story of human life, yet typical of human existence over the last 100,000 years. To find that a "husband" trades his valuable wife at a loss to a man with greater resources is what we would or should expect to happen --- if we have a broader and deeper understanding of human nature. Human cultures have sayings, moral codes, and situational ethics and even emotional systems in place to make these adjustments.... Today, Uyghu girls -- those of Gangis Kahn blood-- like to think "their man" will bravely ride up on a horse and snatch them away from their fathers...or proudly ride up and pay the bride price. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YckFpP9thFE Today Uyghu girls, who can never be seen with eligible boys and still rely on economic-recommendations and suggestions of who to marry from the parents, advertise themselves through friendly videos passed back to the parents and over again to prospective son-in-laws who try to choose and talk up their wealth prospects and good nature. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAtkYpQ6fZU&feature=related
Which is to say, its all very simple and yet very involved negotiations.. Most of all, the human mind is set up emotionally to "Fall in Love"....as an intensely as anyone of us in the USA or the West.
From a Ron Paul patriot point of view, we should notice that it was the "opposition party" who was making an issue about this. Its a political football issue. Of course if there are "Victims" who are FORCED to comply with the "sale" then we take issue with that. But I suspect its all too complicated, love and sex and money and quasi religious cultural norms and family and cousin expectations make the easy ONE SIZE solution fit all, impossible. Hence even the Indian government can't solve it.
The key 3 sentences where:
1) "The centre has been talking of creating a separate authority for Bundelkhand while some factions want a state. Nobody is helping these farmers."
2) Erratic rainfall in the region this year is one of the main causes of failing crops.
3) In India.
