There are many reasons to protest a public option, but since your question is basically if the government option isn't competitive why worry about competing with it? Again, there are many answers, but probably the two biggest are 1. The government creates the rules and regulations, they will 2. It will be subsidized with taxes.
You can also add it will soon not be "competing" but "mandated".

What are they protesting?
The thing that bothers me about the argument against the public option seems to boil down to two points:
a) Its a government program, so it will be expensive and provide terrible service.
b) Its a government program, so how will the private insurers be able to compete against it?
I dont see the logic here. If its going to be such an awful program, why would the private insurers have a hard time competing against it?

It isn't about health insurance
It is about all of the intrusions and thefts and loss of basic rights that have occurred over the years. All of this has happened under both Dems and Republicans. If you research why the insurance industries have such power, you will find the government behind it. When the government made HMOs law, it went down hill from there. Ever since the government got involved in health care in the 60s, it has gone down hill. So, regardless of whether these insurance companies are greedy or not; and they are, they were allowed to get that way by government interference.
If you think that the insurance companies are going to lose with any government interference, regardless of what it is, you are wrong. Insurance and pharmaceutical companies have been getting filthy rich with all of the government programs. We have been getting poorer and poorer while they get our money. The two biggest lobbyists by spending are the pharmaceutical and insurance industries. They have donated heavily to Obama's campaign. http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/19/news/economy/oil_money/index... Katherine, your premise is false.
This hardly boils down to two points, those two points are merely the ones that carry an underlying assumption that there is some responsibility BY ALL, for some kind of encompassing solution..FOR ALL. This is simply a way to avoid the claims of heartlessness or racism for its proponents. That is the first fallacy.
That responsibility for the welfare of others is somehow assumed at birth, is exactly what the collectivist's want you to believe or buy into. It is this sentiment that they have engineered for the last hundred years. It is this sentiment that has led us to this cliff.
This is what is being be played upon in manipulating you into their one world totalitarian idealism and against the tenants of the American Constitution which bespeak of Individualism and personal freedom from the coercion of government. In other words, they bespeak of personal responsibility for oneself, and the freedom to pursue one's desires to the complete ignorance of the collective...for as long as such pursuit does not damage the rights of another, or the abilities of another to pursue such things on their own.
They play to the "teamspeak" that we have all been victim's of given our foundations in American education as designed by the Foundations, the true owners of American industry, in their quest for automaton worker-bees.
The facts remain that Healthcare as we know it, exists in its present very expensive state BECAUSE OF GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT! Government regulation, which in affect is simply a cover for government cronyism, has raised the bar of entry to a point that competition is squelched and services rationed...a highly price raising state of affairs. Add to this the entitlements brought about through Medicare and Medicaid along with a whole slew of other agencies and programs and their price setting nature and you will then see why we pay what we pay for insurance. After all, if the government is willing to pay $1,000.00 for a wheel chair...well then...wheel chairs will cost $1,000.00. But note that the government approved wheelchairs will be manufactered and supplied by a government connected crony.
Further, I fail to see how or why someone should steal from me to cover the unhealthy practices, or unfortunate circumstances, of others. If someone eats their way into oblivious sickness or ill-health, why is it my concern or responsibility to give them money to continue on their self-destructive path? How can you steal from me and mine simply because you think it nice to do so?
You should endeavor to understand this link. While it doesn't address Healthcare per say, it is what underlies the argument.

because the government
because the government doesn't have to worry about profit so it can do a terrible job and still stay in business.
the government is the problem, always, never a solution, the only reason we have government is to keep us safe enough that we don't have to be preocupide with self defense and can focus on living how we want to.

If it were only that smple!
Self defense against giant health ins. corporations is what this is about. These corporations are making their own rules and then changing them as they go. They don't play fair and they are ruining peoples's lives. How can people NOT be preoccupied with self defense?

Then don'y buy it. Eat Raw Organic...
lose the gut, excercise moderately, stop drinking and smoking, boycott Cocoa-Cola, get out in the sun...and buy a major medical catastrophic illness policy. Get on the phone and find services for cash that agree to take what insurance WOULD pay were it used.

How are they not playing fair?
You are free to not use their services. You seem to want to demand that they provide a service for you, then you want to decide how much they should charge and what rules they must follow.
