In an attempt to retain central control and maintain a goal of slow growth …
1. The powerful attempt to do what they think is right, ethical, and proper.
2. When they run out of options with respect to what they think is right, ethical, and proper, they abandon this goal and resort to what is popular.
3. When they run out of options with respect to what is popular, they simply have a goal of slow growth. Right, wrong, and popular go out the window.
4. When they can no longer sustain slow growth, they will abandon this as well and simply do whatever is necessary to retain power.
5. When they realize that this is a futile effort, they will surrender their power and adopt freedom.
We have never achieved the fifth stage in the history of human kind. We are now seeing signs of the second stage here in this country.
I pray that my children or at the very least my grandchildren will be able to witness the fifth stage.
I am an optimist, can you tell?

It seems to me we are
It seems to me we are between stages 3 and 4 so you might yet get to see that fifth stage. I can't think of any examples of stage 1 or stage 2 in the past 40 years. Also it would seem that in this scenario, after stage 1, successive stages would come faster and faster. I believe we will see true freedom in this lifetime. I am also an optimist :)
