Don't Steal, the Government Hates Competition. -- Plaque on the desk of Rep. Ron Paul

Judging by the plaque on the desk of Ron Paul, R-TX, the so-called (by his detractors) "Doctor No" of the Congress, one would think he hates government. But, as he shows in his latest book, End the Fed (Grand Central Publishing, 224 pages, $21.99) he doesn't hate government, he just wants it to do what the Constitution says it should do -- nothing more and nothing less.

One institution that he thinks is not only unconstitutional, but philosophically, economically and morally wrong is the Federal Reserve System, established in 1913 -- the same year as the federal income tax -- as a backdoor approach to a central bank. It was developed -- like the various czars, Troubled Asset Rescue Program (TARP) and bailouts of car companies and banks -- in response to a financial depression, one that occurred in 1907.

In the post-meltdown world, Paul says it is irresponsible, ineffective, and ultimately useless to have a serious economic debate without considering and challenging the role of the Federal Reserve. Throughout the book -- and especially in the last chapter, "The Way Out," Paul shows how the nation functioned just fine without a central bank. The states don't have central banks and must rely on tax revenue to live within their means, he says. He would like to see a return to the gold standard, but even without this ideal situation we shouldn't wait for one before we end the Fed. Too, arguments that a central bank would prevent financial panics certainly haven't come true in the almost 100 years we've had the Fed. In his view, the Great Depression was at least partially caused by the actions of the Fed.

...let it not be said that we did nothing.
-Ron Paul

Bought my copy yesterday for $21.99.

So far I'm on chapter 2, but I did skip ahead to chapter 15 to see Dr. Paul's solution.

Here is how the book starts:
Chapter I
Everybody thinks about money and almost everybody wants more. We use money without thinking much about its nature and function.
Few of us ask where it comes from, who controls it, why it has value, or why it loses value from time to time....

Here is from chapter 15, the way out:
Pages 205&206:

Money and banking were left to the states, with the proviso that the states themselves could only make Gold and Silver legal tender. At the same time there were no restrictions on private minters and private {free} banking. We should embrace this system again, repealing legal tender laws and letting everyone get into the business of the production of money. This would create a competitive market in which the best monies would emerge over time to compete directly with the federal governments dollar.

This system is ever more viable in an age of digital trading and communication. Everyone with an internet connection now has the world financial system available at their finger tips.....etc...etc. Let's put the power of free enterprise to work in choosing which money is best.

beesting comment:
Hasn't Edwin Vieira already introduced this concept at the state level???

Yes, he has:

http://www.goldmoneybill.org/

Come on folks, this is the new system already available to us.
If we wait for the same old banksters to start a new international monetary system, our American sovereignty is lost.

your comment made my morning - Thanks*))

I am on my way to get the book...

Thank you for the article.

I wish a few thousand like minded Ron Paul supporters would also use their energy to push for competing currencies at the state level. As Mr. Vieira says," if one state passes his Goldmoney plan other states are sure to follow." ....And wa-la the Fed's monetary power will slowly collapse replaced by a better and Constitutional monetary system.

End the Fed !

Ron Paul is My President !

Thank you for keeping this post bumped up

agreed.

btw I send this book review to a lady journalist who recently wrote an article against FED audit and she was happy to read it and said she will write a new article telling our side of this issue!...

Can't wait to read this book.

Welllllll,

It says:

"It is inflating currency today at nearly a Weimar Republic (Germany from 1919-1933) or Zimbabwe level, a practice that threatens to put us into an inflationary depression where $100 bills are worthless"

It technically is.

You only need to inflate your currency over 50% to start a chain-reaction like Weimar.

We have increased our money supply 187% since last year.

I think the elites have

I think the elites have known that the Fed is unsustainable for decades now. They're not stupid. They will allow it to collapse but make it appear that "we" did it. As much as I'd like to believe that the r3volution is responsible, I can't help but feel that, while our motives are pure, events are being manipulated behind the scenes. ----- "You are a den of Vipers.I intend to rout you out and by the Eternal God I will rout you out."

For an informed citizenry, individuals must discard the television set in favor of the acquisition of information via either books and/or the internet. An uneducated populous will remain in ignorance and thus continue to suffer the sharp ax of tyranny.

good point

I am worried that FED will be replaced with a global central bank and global currency...that really worries me.
As you say "they are not stupid".

...soooo

"we" would have to remind our fellow citizens that the FED made the current mess, so why should they be trusted to set up anything; "we" need to remind them that global anything takes away from the USA's independence, "we" need to remind them global currency is against our Constitution, etc.

Thank you my friend*))

same here - right away my soul felt warm and cosy...
and here the last part melted my heart like butter in the midday sun ~

Ron Paul manages to unite those on the Left and the Right of the political spectrum. The book's jacket has this endorsement from liberal Arlo Guthrie: "Rarely has a single book not only challenged, but decisively changed my mind."

And, on the Right, actor Vince Vaughn says: "Everybody must read this book -- Congressmen and college students, Democrats and Republicans -- all Americans." Vaughn is a Libertarian who concluded after reading an advance copy of End the Fed that "the Federal Reserve, which serves private banks, has compromised our economy and is undermining our freedom. It can and must be stopped now."

Whether you agree with Ron Paul or not, End the Fed is must reading for everyone, especially those who've accepted the conventional wisdom about the Fed.

That is an awesome review!!

Throughout the book -- and especially in the last chapter, "The Way Out," Paul shows how the nation functioned just fine without a central bank. The states don't have central banks and must rely on tax revenue to live within their means, he says.

And he claims to want to end the IRS? hmmmm.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but state taxes have nothing to do with the IRS. That is a federal agency. The IRS doesn't audit your state taxes.

check this out

click on The Issue of Tariffs. this lecture focuses on tariffs and US revenue and how the constitution forced congress to be at war with itself... if they wanted to raise protectionist tariffs they did it at their own risk as they would lose fed revenue a la "laffer" curve ...(tariffs used to be around %90 of all fed revenue)
the irs is a much more lucrative form of revenue collection without such balance. if we got rid of the federal reserve and the irs, the gov't would have no choice to live within its means as their prime source of money creation/revenue are gone...

"The Myth of an Independent Federal Reserve"

Thanks for the Links.

I listened o some of it, but I just can't let myself believe, this is because the constitution is being mis-used. Even if it was used properly, can it run on anything BUT force?

ok... now check this out...ha

and click on "is voluntary government possible" to hear someone who is better read than i answer your question...

The an-cap/ minarchy debate is where any true discussion of politics end up... and my one sentence response is that the world isn't perfect... people aren't perfect, man's needs and wants can never be satisfied. their is a thin line between freedom and force, and its hard to straddle, we fell towards the force side (perhaps even the "dark side of the force" (couldn't resist)) long ago. as a child - when I realized that tasty food makes you sick, and when you're having real fun you wind up scraping your knee... there is risk reward aspect of life and you cant have rights without responsibility

check out Lysander Spooner, he asked why does the constitution apply to me... i never signed it, never gave my consent... nowhere else in reality does anyone just arbitrarily expect you to agree and consent to something...
and here is a little audio on him:

"The Myth of an Independent Federal Reserve"

Bump- thanks for the links!

You also made some good points about the IRS

-I favor extending to Israel the same honest friendship that Jefferson and the Founding Fathers urged us to offer to all nations. ...This means I also favor discontinuing foreign aid to governments that are actual or potential enemies of Israel,--Ron Paul

But that man should play the tyrant over God, and find Him a better man than himself, is astonishing drama indeed!~~D. Sayers

There is no difference between an authoritarian government from the right or the left...F. A.Schaeffer

Um...

The IRS really has nothing to do with state taxes.

They are merely the collection agents of the Fed.
