Want Energy Independence? The Kachelofen is 1000+ years old and can not be beat as a heat source!

0 votes

I know that you are wondering what a Kachelofen (kak-ah-LOW-fen) is? This has to be the most interesting, but basic principle in heating! Why have we not found this before?

This is known as a masonry oven stove, masonry heater, and many other names in different cultures. Efficiency is said to be 80-90%. I've spent many hours researching this and have come to the conclusion that this needs to be shared with all freedom and liberty loving persons who want to increase their independence.

I will add more links as I find them. However, at this time I will give you some starting links and let the discussion rage.

A good article with pictures giving a good summary of the Kachelofen:

There is a ton of information out there about these devices. If you find more links post them and I will add them. I will continue to add links.

Have you seen the new show on the Discovery channel "The Colony" ? http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/colony/colony.html They have a lot of good ideas and info

No I have not seen that

No I have not seen that discovery special. I was actually researching corn burning stoves when I accidentally found the Kachelofen and got hooked.

I'll have to check it out... :P

thank you

=)

Which is more important: To fight the system or to gain

independence from it? I believe we must keep our feet in both arenas, especially working toward system independence. Once we achieve energy and food independence we can be the world-wide bench mark for others to follow thus eliminating wars and allowing peace prosperity. Thanks for a most important thread with great links.

Incredible stoves!

Some of these stoves pictured in the VERY fascinating Low Tech Magazine are just incredible! Thanks for posting.

Another note...think of all the things we can build once again as I saw in that magazine....very interesting indeed! Now to get rid of all the stifling regulations against doing anything in this once free country!

Thanks for the post!

I was going to create a post on this subject this past spring but I never got around to it. I'll try to post the links I collected if I can find them.

I heard somewhere that there was a village in Germany that had a forest from which they collected branches from coppiced trees for fuel. I believe this forest has been in continual use for a few hundred years.

Bookmarked

I thoughtv everyone knows

I thoughtv everyone knows about firebricks..
Good people do Good deeds
Good people make it happen

It isn't just the firebricks

It isn't just the firebricks that do the trick though. It is the way they guide the fire exhaust back and forth and back and forth within the stone/cement/brick mass to impart most of the heat to the large mass.

These stoves are burned at max burn possible once(sometimes twice) per day and they keep the area warm the whole day!

Although the inside of masonry heaters are made of

firebricks, so are the inside of fireplaces, etc, but the difference between masonry heaters, and wood stoves and fireplaces are many.
For instance, masonry heaters are extremely efficient, and produce basically no smoke. They only have to be loaded once a day, and produce heat for 24 hours.

My cousin has been building masonry heaters

for many years, and knows most of the people on the MHA site. He was one of those responsible for changing the laws in Denver, CO to allow masonry heaters to be used there (because masonry heaters do not pollute like wood stoves, etc.). He also built me this:

This is a wood fired bread oven.

That is very cool

Great looking wood-fired bread oven!

I've been trying to get my local Cooperative Extension to hold a seminar on building these. Yours looks great!

Haven't had time to review it all, but will continue looking in to it. Thanks.
