Ron Paul and Sarah Palin: The Ross Perot moment

The most startling statistic to come out this month is the latest Washington Post/ABC poll that shows 43 percent of Americans now consider themselves to be independents.

Much of the celebrity thrill seems to be gone, as Wall Street Journal commentator Fouad Ajami said it would, with the hip new president who gives such charming speeches. Could be that hip is not what you want in a president when the only difference between Cheney’s war in Iraq and Obama’s war in Afghanistan and Bush’s missile defense program and Obama’s is the better cut of the new commander in chief’s suit. On the two main fronts, the economy and the war, majorities oppose, and he has even lost 10 percent of the young'uns since July. Twenty-two-year-olds consider themselves to be immortal. They don’t want health insurance.

Change is about, without question, but Obama himself may only be the harbinger, not the change. We could be approaching not a Kennedy or a Roosevelt or a Lincoln moment, but a Ross Perot moment.

Ross Perot came out of nowhere back in the early 1990s and with a kooky Texas freshness, a crateful of his own cash and a bunch of charts, he took almost 20 percent of the vote in 1992. At one point in the summer he commanded a lead with 39 percent. What the Perot moment indicated was that World War II or Elvis or the Beach Boys or something had freed Americans from their old constraints. But Ronald Reagan really turned the sea. Prior to Reagan you could with accuracy count on good Boston Irish going to the Catholic Church and voting Democrat every time. You could count on New York Jews and Southern Baptists to do the same. But when Reagan took 49 states in 1984, it was all over with that. Americans were free. With 43 percent claiming to be independent today, they apparently still are free.

This week Arianna Huffington, the liberal doyenne, and Ron Paul both appeared on "Morning Joe." They seemed to like each other and to be in increasing agreement on economic issues. But what was striking was the new legitimacy that Rep. Paul (Texas) has gained since Obama’s bailouts have taken hold. Given the high disapproval ratings on both the economy and the war, it could be said today that the country is moving to Paul’s positions by osmosis. Paul opposed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He opposed the bailouts. He opposed the entire Keynesian perspective that the Obama administration has adopted lock, stock and barrel. Morning Joe — no radical libertarian — pulled out an old script to read in amazement how the housing crisis had played out exactly as Paul said it would back in 2003. Paul advocates Austrian economics, and as he gathers continuing respect, Austrian economics gains a new authenticity as well.

Palin is a

NoeCon tool. She is too stupid to be the President or Vice President....of course Bush, Biden, and Gore were no scholars. But in the times we are in Palin is not up to the job mentally...But Ron Paul is!

Some will say Dr. Paul is too old. Hoooeeeey!

I will take Ron Paul at 103 over Palin any day. Palin has a better chance of posing in Penthouse than she does powdering his ass in the White House....Gimme a break.

Paul / Ventura 2012!

I voted for

Perot

Palin and Paul as different as night and day

This article actually confuses me. I cannot begin to understand how Sarah Palin and Ron Paul bear kinship in any way.

I do not think that Ron Paul would ever have approved a Windfall Profits Tax or a Bridge to Nowhere.

These two agenda items supported by Palin during her very short term as governor seem to contradict everything Libertarians believe.

Sarah Palin doesn't really

Sarah Palin doesn't really excite me. I could get fired up about her if she got fired up about Ron Paul, though. Or, even if she could just make a commitment to abide by her oath of office to obey the Constitution.

...

correction

"But what was striking was the new legitimacy that Rep. Paul (Texas) has gained since Obama’s bailouts have taken hold. "

The author forgets that the last round of bailouts started under Bush.

Palin = Bush

Palin is more like George Bush, spending under her was highest it's ever been. She supports Bush's wars and supported him while campaigning for VP.

The former governor to compare to Ron Paul would be Gary Johnson. He was the only Republican governor to not endorse Bush in 2000, he was against both wars, and the rate of growth in his state was cut in half. With 750 vetos under his reign, Gary "Veto" Johnson is the closest governor to Dr. No.

Seriously, people. Palin is

Seriously, people. Palin is not a neo conservative. The fact that Kristol himself is playing her up, suggests not too many dare define themselves as such anymore, either.

Of course, neither is she a libertarian. But I can't help but feel encouraged by the number of Bush era self professed "conservatives" now seemingly aspiring to be called libertarians. Lots of what Palin did as governor of Alaska is stuff a libertarian can approve of, even if I doubt she did them based on some fully worked out libertarian view of the world. While in other areas, notably the war, she is, or at least was, just flat wrong.

In more ways than not, her and her supporters are our natural, if limited, allies, more than she and they are our enemies. And we need allies. Even people who aren't doctrinaire libertarians and constitutionalists can help us further our goals in many cases. Palin is one of them, just like Cindy Sheehan, Dennis Kucinich, Glen Beck and Ralph Nader. None exactly my idea of a great champion of liberty, but each in at least some areas pulling in the right direction.

Palin is a highschool cheer

Palin is a highschool cheer leader, she does not have the inteligence to run more than her own family, just because she's quasi attractive does not give her credentials to be in office.

I know this woman personaly, I live in wasilla, my wife was baby sat by her, she is an intelectual ROCK, speaking to her in person reminds me of speaking to my 7 year old, she does have a certain charisma, but thats IT!.....

Reading your post

only shows me that my 5 year old has a better grasp of the English language, grammar, and punctuation then you do. If you want to attack someone's "intelectual" level, you might first want to learn how to spell the word.

i like the sentiment of this article

even though im not a huge fan of palin.

there are many that are, and for the right reasons.

OK brothers and sisters in liberty...

I know it reflects badly on us Alaskans, voting in a neocon like Palin. But in our defense, if I remember right we proudly gave Ron Paul votes during the RNC I didn't see too many other states making a point of mentioning the good doctor for the rest of the convention.

That must count for something B) lol It doesn't matter we need to be consentrating on bigger fish anyhoo.

Ron Paul 2012!!

What a shame the first comment under the blog article

calls Palin a libertarian and a great woman. Barf.

Insulting that the author linked the two to begin with. When will people move on from that lightweight neocon?

yeah but the other 100 or so

almost guarantees that writer will not mention them in the same article again.

"they go together like popcorn and the opera."
gotta love Ron Paul supporters.

Perot and Ron Paul

The only two people I have ever voted and have seen speak in person. Both were/are game-changers.

Ya know,

I supported Ross Perot, he kept telling us about a "giant sucking sound" if cafta passed, and guess what he was right. Where have all our jobs gone, south of the border, or overseas to china and india.

43% is very admirable

i love it!

AWESOME!!!!!!!! Great article LL!!

Osmosis LOL yeah... that's it. RP's idea are becomming mainstream by osmosis. That's rich.

Palin sucks.

Sarah Palin is the worst. She should never be compared to Dr. Paul. Lame.

Palin is

a Shill.

Not compaired

Not compaired .Accompanied.
Sarah is ok in my book , the only other big name going , that talks straight.
Sorry to burst your bubble, don't hate me ..I see what I see.
Good people do Good deeds
Good people make it happen

She exemplifies all the

She exemplifies all the worst attributes of the most shameless politicians. Every time she speaks and puts her cluelessness on full display she hurts the cause of small government. If Sarah Palin had real power she’d be a far greater danger to liberty than even Obama. Don't be fooled, she is a shill.

I happen to like Sarah as well.

I am a big time Paulite; however, I view Palin as one of the few honest politicians out there. That is why I like her. I agree, she was not ready yet for prime time when she ran as VP. She was only 43, heck Obama was not ready yet either and it is showing, regardless of what you think of his policies. I never understood why people insult Sarah Palin so viciously. Above all else, I like Ron Paul because in my gut I know the guy is honest. I believe Sarah Palin to be honest as well until proven otherwise. Please give me specifics as to why Palin is a Shill? Give me specifics as to what she does that is dishonest? I have not ever heard any specifics, just mean spirited name calling when it comes to Palin.

you forgot

and she should not be compared to Ross Perot.

"How can we justify to the unemployed and underemployed in the United States the incredible cost of maintaining a global empire?" - Dr. Ron Paul

Palin really sucks

Palin REALLY sucks. She's a female version of the socialist Mike Huckabee but with a neocon flavor to her.

Huckabee was a theocrat socialist who had infiltrated the R party.

She is working with PNAC and Bill Kristol right now to pressure Obama for the neoconservatives. Besides, who would be dumb enough to be McCain's sidekick?

Invalid10~ did you catch
