Ron Paul: Trade Wars and Protectionism are not Free Trade

Read the full text from Dr. Paul's statement below:

Two weeks ago, both the administration and the Fed announced with straight faces that the recession was over and the signs of economic recovery were clear. Then last week, the president made a stunning decision that signals the administration’s determination to repeat the mistakes of the Great Depression. Much like the Smoot-Hawley Tariffs that set off a global trade war and effectively doomed us to ten more years of economic misery, Obama’s decision to enact steep tariffs on Chinese imported tires could spark a trade war with the single most important trading partner we have. Not only does China manufacture a whole host of products that end up on American store shelves, they are also still buying our Treasury debt.

One has to wonder why this course of action is being undertaken if the administration really believes its own statements about economic recovery. Why are they still trying to fix something they have supposedly already fixed? The most troubling thing is the rhetoric about free trade given to justify this. The administration claims it is merely enforcing trade policies and that this is necessary for free trade. This sort of double speak demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of free trade, economics and world history. Yet these are the same people the country trusts to solve our problems. This sort of thing should remove all doubt about the credibility of the decision makers in Washington.

The truth is this will hurt American consumers by driving up prices of tires and cars. This will also complicate matters for our already crippled manufacturing and agricultural industries, if and when China retaliates against US made products. Whatever jobs might be saved in the tire and steel industries here as a result of this protectionist measure will likely be lost in other American industries. It is even doubtful that those jobs will be saved, as cheap tires can be obtained from other places like Mexico instead. It is difficult to see any real winners among all the losers where trade wars are concerned. If Unions think this is beneficial to them, they are being penny-wise and pound foolish.

Free trade with all and entangling alliances with none has always been the best policy in dealing with other countries on the world stage. This is the policy of friendship, freedom and non-interventionism and yet people wrongly attack this philosophy as isolationist. Nothing could be further from the truth. Isolationism is putting up protectionist trade barriers, starting trade wars imposing provocative sanctions and one day finding out we have no one left to buy our products. Isolationism is arming both sides of a conflict, only to discover that you’ve made two enemies instead of keeping two friends. Isolationism is trying to police the world but creating more resentment than gratitude. Isolationism is not understanding economics, or other cultures, but clumsily intervening anyway and creating major disasters out of minor problems.

The government should not be in the business of giving out favors to special interests or picking winners and losers in the market, yet this has been most of what has consumed politicians’ attention in Washington. It has reached a fevered pitch lately and it needs to end if we are ever to regain a functional and prosperous economy.

We haven't had free trade

As one poster mentioned above, the only free trade that exists in America today is the black market.

Free trade hasn't killed millions of jobs and caused our economic woes, the Fed has along with too much government regulation and interference.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, but free trade, REAL free trade is our friend, not the bogus "free trade" B.S. government talks about, like NAFTA, etc.

Those are lies.

Ron Paul speaks the truth. Listen to him, study, become educated.

"It is well enough that people of the nation do not understand our banking and monetary system, for if they did, I believe there would be a revolution before tomorrow morning." - Henry Ford

Our country had tariffs in

Our country had tariffs in the early days, and as far as I know, they worked well, but I think I can partially see where he is coming from.

When a country subsidizes exports, it's the same as that country giving us free money we don't have to pay back. To give an extreme example, if a country subsidized 100% all our needs and desires, eg food, clothing, housing, entertainment we wouldn't need to work. We could just live off their labor and be debt free (actually there would still be healthcare, service and trade jobs - essentially all we have now).

It should follow that with less than 100% subsidies from exporting countries we should have to work, but work less than if there were no subsidies. I wish he had explained it thoroughly.

So called 'free-trade'

Free-trade only exists in theory. It does not exist in reality because of the inequities of nations. Moreover, central banks in developed nations manipulate their monetrary systems and their respective parliaments do the same with regulation. Therefore, we end up with managed trade. And isn't that where federal revenue is supposed to come from. Abolish the federal income tax and institute a low tariff on all goods coming in.

Free Trade Exists

It's illegal, and that is changing through new marijuana laws. Medical marijuana is un taxed (though you do buy tags from the sheriff) it is unregulated and traded through a prosperous undergroud that supports the police state. Free Mises, Imprison Keynes and you'll have legal free trade.

Yes! Exactly.

Yes! Exactly.

This "free trade" we enjoy

This "free trade" we enjoy for decades killed millions of jobs and created billions of debt. The only beneficiaries of free trade are international corporations and banks. Ron Paul is wrong ! Free trade is one of many tools WTO and IMF is using to enslave hundred of milions workers around the world. Free trade is a tool for global exploitation. There is no free lunch... there is nothing free... everything has its price... we are paying that price too long... ask that woman in Indonesia working 16 hour shift for 15 cents per hour what free trade is... do you really want such future for your kids here???
Free trade is... economic scam lottery where the many pay for the comfort of the few... for the one chance they can chase that carrot.

RP is not defending NAFTA free trade

He is exposing it as a protectionist philosophy which he claims does NOT work. I agree with Ron Paul.

RP wants to END NAFTA and the Fed and the Keynesian economics that make us all poor and in debt.

I agree with Ron on everything, EXCEPT this

Just like you can't have a truly free market with the fed controlling interest rates, you can't have truly free trade with a country that manipulates its exchange rate. Just like a manipulated interest rate causes malinvestment, distortions in the market, and bubbles and busts, so does a manipulated exchange rate, and the manipulations are obvious when you look at our trade balances.

I believe in free trade, but I only believe in free trade with countries who do not manipulate their currency and only with countries with similar laws, legal system, and regulations. Otherwise production will go to the countries with the most lenient laws in terms of pollution, treatment of employees, contract laws, slave labor, ect.

As H.R. 1207 prepares to go to hearing 9/25

THE BIGGEST MANIPULATORS R US.

We do NOT have free trade. If we did have free trade I would be growing, selling, investing in cannabis products, foods, feed, fiber and fuel.

We have NAFTA and as RP points out, this is NOT free trade, but protectionism, making sure someone like me can not grow cannabis crops and others can not sell, buy, cannabis to make anything.

Ironically, cannabis is experienceing free trade on the black capitalist market, and it's not alone. We have a HUGE war on drugs that passes internationally. So really, here in the USA, free trade is illegal.

Production can prosper with free trade.. Medical marijuana, the tip of the iceburg of what cannabis can do, is a $40 billion crop, despite the USA government spending $400 Billion to stop it.

Correct

Sorry Ron this is one area I

Sorry Ron this is one area I disagree with you. The fact is we NEED to place tariffs on China. Im all for competition but how can you compete with slavery and child labor. We need to start producing things but we cant do that while we give all the advantages to China. Also let China get mad and quit buying our debt. That is good for us in the long run anyways.

How can you compete?

By having your own slavery and child labor, which we do, we just don't talk about it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wackenhut

Excellent points. There has

Excellent points.

There has been a lot of talk here recently about Glenn Beck. I've ignored most of it. But you have to admit, he got it right with the names of his websites:

1. Prison Planet, and
2. InfoWars

Yes, we have our own system of slavery, but as you pointed out, no one knows about it. The corporations don't like to rat on each other. The result - we're in the midst of the Infowar.

Isn't this headline material?

Thank you GREAT SPEACH as usual...thank goodness ;))
