He's a Master Sargent. The kids under him have called him "a legend." His wife heard that from the wives of the young guys and she had a good laugh.

During his first tour his squad took random fire on every patrol but he never fired back. There was no one visible to shoot but civilians. One time they were taking fire and his guys were all huddled down and scared and my cousin marched outside and hollered, "OK, who's shooting at me?" Got his guys morale back fast.

Once at a checkpoint some Iraqi cops wanted to take an Iraqi fellow into custody. My cousin said there's no way this guy is an insurgent and they let him go. He was invited to the freed man's wedding as a guest of honor.

My cousin is a Republican type and he enjoys doing his job. But he does it with honor and I respect that. He just went back this month, maybe to Afghanistan, but we don't know for sure. I know he'll make it home OK this time, too.
