How to Raise Poll Numbers in NH

0 votes

By way of introduction, my name is Keith Murphy, and I'm the owner of Murphy's Taproom in Manchester, NH. I'm a big supporter of Ron Paul, and local grassroots efforts are based out of my pub. Dr. Paul was at my place last night, and I've been lucky enough to have him as a regular customer for the past two months.

I see the campaign, as well-intentioned as they are, making some serious errors in judgment. Please consider the following advice:

1) HE NEEDS TO SPEND MORE TIME HERE. For Ron Paul to do well, i.e. come in first or second in the NH primary, he needs to practically live here and campaign every day across the state. He needs to stop into every restaurant, every barber shop, and every grocery store. That's how Buchanan won NH, and that's the only way that Ron Paul can pull it off here. Hell, he can have my spare bedroom for free if he wants it (same goes for any RP supporter here to help get him elected.)

2) HOUSE PARTIES, HOUSE PARTIES, HOUSE PARTIES. NH residents are very spoiled, and they take their historic role in picking presidents very seriously. They are accustomed to, if they are so inclined, being able to meet literally every single candidate, and I don't mean meet them at a pre-organized rally. I mean meet them at house parties organized by their supportive neighbor. Hillary Clinton is here all the time, and she has her NH supporters organizing house parties for her to stop by and meet 15-30 people at a time. That's how NH is won, more than any other single strategy. He should be here all the time (and that means not seeing Texas nor Washington DC until the primary) and spend most of his evenings traveling a well-marked route from house party to house party.

3) STOP SENDING HUGE MULTI-PAGE MAILERS I keep seeing these huge, 15-page mail pieces that must cost a fortune to print and mail. Look, most people aren't going to read through something like that. When they get a campaign piece in the mail, they're going to read the front, if you're lucky, and they just might read the back. Most of them aren't going to open it up. This is a tremendous waste of donor dollars going right into the trash. Send two-sided mailers instead.

4) CHANGE THE RADIO ADS FREQUENTLY The campaign has been cramming the airwaves with two commercials for the past three weeks or so. That has raised name rec, but it's leading to name fatigue already. When I talk to locals about Ron Paul, the response I get lately hasn't been positive because all they know is that they've been hearing the same damn commercials over and over and over, and each commercial mentions his name fifteen times. They're getting tired of it. They've all heard of him by now, but they don't know what he stands for. Record more commercials, aiming at the crucial undeclared voters, making it clear that Ron Paul will end the war before any of the Democratic candidates. Give some pithy comments on the falling dollar, on the effect on the middle class. Don't bring up the gold standard, because almost no one knows what that is anymore. Talk about health care, and how a doctor knows how to fix the system. Talk about Dr. Paul's life story. Talk about his stance on immigration. Just please change it up! People will vote against him because they're tired of hearing the same two commercials. Some have heard them so often they're actually mocking it, reciting it line for line.

5) MOST IMPORTANTLY, BE BOLD IN DRAWING DISTINCTIONS. In both radio and television ads, use bold, dramatic language to show that Ron Paul is different than every other candidate. We need an equivalent to the famous 1964 Daisy ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkWAhuXtalw. Go for 60 second ads. The current 30-second ads are too short to convey what this campaign is about. Look, we're running out of time here, and the campaign isn't doing enough to draw over the undeclared voters we need to win this primary - because I have to say that the neocons in the Republican Party aren't going to vote for Dr. Paul in significant numbers. Be brash. Be loud. Take risks. Stake out Dr. Paul's positions and let no one confuse him with the other Republicans. Current polls say about 70% of NH's undeclareds are leaning towards voting in the D primary due to their disgust with the war, and we've got to convince them to ask for an R ballot. Run an ad with film of all the Democratic candidates saying they'll keep troops in Iraq for years, and then have Ron Paul promise to begin troop removal within 60 days of taking office. Run an ad making it clear that the current R candidates are just like the D candidates, and that Ron Paul is truly different. He is the sole choice for change in America, the very definition of anti-establishment. Start making that case, because you aren't making it now, and we're running out of time. Think outside the box.

These comments are meant constructively, and with deep concern for how the campaign is going. If the vote were today Ron Paul would come in fourth, maybe third if overall turnout is low (thereby distilling the effect of his zealous supporters), but that won't be enough. He needs to come in first or second to get any sort of bounce going into South Carolina and the mega-primary in February.

Thanks. The campaign knows where to find me if they need anything. I'm happy to help however I can.

Buchanan did win NH, but his flaw was no time in South Carolina

I think you are right on with everything you say here - except the small house parties of 20 people - I think he should do house parties but go bigger maybe 50 people. Also I see a flaw in the Buchanan Campaign and that was to spend all his time in New Hampshire like he did, but forget to follow through for the home run in South Carolina. When Pat Buchanan hit South Carolina and Lost, he lost momentum. I think Ron Paul has to do much more campaigning in NH, but he can't forget about the next big one in South Carolina - Nevada too. It will be a fine line, but he has to walk it to make this work.

we need more literature to each door so voters know ron paul

is anti-war.

According to a recent Pew Research Center study, Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul is known on some level by at least 51% of American voters.

The December 5 study asked Americans of all political persuasions various questions regarding the Republican presidential candidates. 21% of all Republicans (and 12% of Democrats) knew that Ron Paul was the only Republican candidate against the Iraq War. To contrast, 90% of Republicans knew that Rudy Giuliani was previously the mayor of New York, 65% knew that John McCain was a former Vietnam POW, and 36% knew that Mike Huckabee was formerly the governor of Arkansas.

The study was broadened to consider how much the participants knew about each of the potential Republican candidates. When asked about Ron Paul, 5% of the participants stated that they knew "a lot" about him, with 17% stating that they knew "some" about him, 28% stating that they knew "not much," and 49% stating that they knew "nothing at all" about Paul.

Several of the leading Republican presidential candidates were not highly known by the study participants, with 42% not recognizing Mike Huckabee, 33% not recognizing Fred Thompson, and 28% not recognizing Mitt Romney. In comparison, only 11% did not recognize Rudy Giuliani and 17% did not recognize John McCain.

Ron Paul's media exposure continues to flourish, with recent Paul recently named the GQ "Dark Horse of the Year." GQ editors state that Ron Paul has instilled "fear" in the GOP for tapping "into his party's silent minority, one that won't abide torture, reckless spending, or endless war."

Previous Pew Research Center studies have considered the effect of the internet on politics, concluding that more Americans continue to use the internet for seeking information in making their election decisions, potentially boding well for the "internet candidate" Paul.

How to Raise Poll Numbers in NH

I think these ideas are fabulous!

I would also like to add: Carol Paul should be introduced more. The human interest side I think, would draw a good amount of attention. The fact--- Ron Paul has been married to the same woman for fifty years-- helps people connect with family unity--which, in my humble opinion, has been the life support for this country. Carol and Ron Paul have five children and 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, people want to see them.

Just my $0.02 worth...

"The moral and constitutional obligations of our representatives in Washington are to protect our liberty, not coddle the world, precipitating no-win wars, while bringing bankruptcy and economic turmoil to our people." ~Ron Paul

How can we make ppl see RP as mainstream.

I tried talking to few ppl into in my town about RP, but some still think he is kind of a kooky and radical person. How can we make people understand that his ideas are in fact very reasonable and quite mainstream.

OPEN LETTER TO THE RON PAUL HQ

You guys at HQ should get in contact with guys like Trevor Lyman, Keith Murphy in New Hampshire and Vijay Boyapti to use their skills as staffers or paid consultants. No disrepect to your own efforts but these guys alone are central to getting millions to hear about Ron Paul over the past few months.

The people are in this to win, and Dr Paul is our voice. We agree with him on his principled method and want him to lead. To lead he must win. We can no longer fight for 3rd or 4th place. Hire the best people for the job and spare no expense on brain power available to you. I've heard of large glossy brochures in New Hampshire, where some believe that shorter more concise messaging would be better. As a marketer I can say that less is more especially when your trying to cut through the media clutter. I can also say that Ron's key talking points once stated succinctly draw a line in the sand which many voters will want to cross and join our side.

The grassroots are marketers, web designers, consultants and professionals of all stripes that must be brought into the strategic tent to build this mans name. It is not HQ that loses if Ron Paul is not president it is literally the entire USA and even the world. Lets leave our collective egos at the door and start talking and working together in a meaningful way. Its not even a month left. People are deciding NOW. Lets not blow it.

I agree with these

I agree with these suggestions 100%. I'm in NH right now and would like to see a lot of these things implemented. Hillary's campaign is a juggernaut here. EVERY town has massive Hillary signs everywhere and she's making appearances all the time. It's time to step it up.

These are all excellent observations and suggestions

These are all fine insights. Change-up the ads, live in the state, stay on the main messages & strengths - bring troops home now, sound money, freedom, no empire, immigration. All five points are essential to winning New Hampshire. I hope the campaign acknowledges your observations and hopefully there will be progress! Good for you, Keith Murphy!

Juxtaposing War stance with democrats

First off, thank you Keith for making us feel at home in your establishment.

I agree with Mr. Murphy that we need to make it perfectly clear to independent voters that the democrats are complicit in this war. We need a T.V. ad that juxtaposes Ron Paul's stance on the war with Barack's, Hillary's, and Edward's stances. I have linked two great examples of this that are present in youtube videos.

Ron Paul Revolution: The Movie
About two thirds of the way through, starts with Hillary, Edwards, and McCain, then Ron (all speaking before the war.)

It is one thing to say Paul is anti-war, it is another thing to hear him speak out against it so strongly before we got ourselves into this mess.

It is imperative that we make independents realize that the three dems do not represent real opposition to this war. Perhaps we could create our own commercial and air it independently of the campaign (they might not like it, but I think our past efforts speak for themself.)
As far as I am concerned, New Hampshire is where this thing needs to happen. We need a top two finish to gain momentum for the larger states.

If anyone thinks that creating/airing this commercial is possible with the time we have left (obviously including fundraising for ad placement) please contact me at athomps3@uvm.edu. I will be arriving in New Hampshire this Friday, can't wait to see y'all there!

Yes and No

Keith,
I agree with some of your criticisms. Paul is not here enough, but the campaign knows that. They should do house parties, and they are planning on that. I disagree about the direct mail - they rock, and have been VERY effective. The campaign knows how effective they are, because people fill out the forms from the mailers and send them in. Yes, they should rotate more ads.

deaf ears

I truly believe this is all falling on deaf ears.

I dont think HQ is listening because when have you ever seen them 'change course'?

Naw, they will be playing the same lame TV commercials. The radio ads are good, but like the OP said.. add something new.

Hmm. Beethoven was born on December 16 - Me too!

Geeze i am just about jumping out of my skin. I want to help do TV SPOT so badly after reading all this. GREAT spots. With Great Team Members. How am i gonna make this happen - going nuts here in Wisconsin. We don't see much in the way of spots here yet but i am gonna check Youtube and other links again to see everything that is running - check the boring quotient. :) I am so goofy i am writing campaign songs for my imaginary spots.

We have a team of people working the phones and emailing thousands of restaurants in primary states and nationally.

But more importantly restaurants more than any other business, have more contact with politically active people than any business on the face of the earth.
Restaurant owners are political contributors.
That means delegate impact too.

Percentage Game

QUOTE from a Youtube comment: "The media doesn't want us to know that only %5-10 of the American people actually vote in Republican primaries. Ron Paul supporters already outnumber total voters. To top it off voter turn out is %10 for each candidate. Only one out of every ten supporters will go vote. If half of us Ron Paul supporters show up he will win by a landslide. The media will try and discourage you from voting because they know he is most likely to win. We vote and losing is statistically impossible."

Well, i liked this sentiment, what is the commentary on this notion? I have seen others write this before. Perhaps the committee is working along these lines? (Never mind anywhere else but New Hampshire and Iowa for now) - and then Ron Paul will get the recognition? Just asking - i am a neophyte with this political stuff. Thank you.

Delegates

Are you a delegate? I think it is true that Paul will get an amazing turnout. But without delegates we can't win.

primary vote count

just want to say that I have all ready asked for Feb 6th off work so I can stay at my precinct on the 5th to watch and report the vote count. Plan to stay there no matter how late it runs!

make sure the NH//campaign knows it

The actual campaign seems to be aspleep at the wheel sometimes with this stuff. Hit them up until they get the picture. Although I doubt he can do tons more face-time, they can adress some of the other stuff, and commericals, geeze volunteers could splice together interview clips for 30 second spots in no time flat that have hime talking aobut many subjects effectively.

I would help

I am a full-fledged producer/director/writer/filmmaker/broadcast media person. And excellent editor. If there is serious need, i am THERE. Thanks. In fact, my forte is "image pieces" - growing brands - but more importantly, infusing a subject with pathos, empathy, heart, guts, passion, and so on. Rather than slick stuff i do REAL stuff - makes you cry and have goosebumps. Just being honest about how i work. I emailed the committee the very FIRST day i knew of Ron Paul, but no response. If this comes full circle, count me IN. Thanks again. P.S missdavenport - you sort of completely misunderstood me - which is ok, i am sure it was confusing - the one about the percentages. No worries. And yeah, i get that about sludge or - whatever. that was actually the point. Love. thanks.

Contacting Concord

Keith, I think those are great suggestions. I assume being the owner of the what is essentially headquarters in Manchester, that you've been in touch with the Concord people. If for some reason, you don't have their personal contact information, I can help you out if you're serious about sending these suggestions to them directly and haven't been able to. Email me at CWhalen@gmail.com if I can help :)

To Corie...

I am very close to the Chairman who is in VA and I have mentioned all of this to him many times. So Keith's message does get heard. (Remember that ad y'all hated? I discussed that with him the night it came out..he had called to ask me why everyone was so upset.)

And, sometimes people think nothing is going on in NH because of the dang press acting like Ron's campaign is 'quixotic and disorganized' when it is NOT!

I resent that characterization I really do. I mean, along with the stuff the campaign has mailed we have tons of it from Linda's press and if you saw any photos of the tables I did, they rocked because they were rich with 'stuff'. We have had plenty of signs from the get go, and now we have plenty of people canvassing and calling...we have the radio, TV ads, and I did most of the GOP outreach and still do. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT?

OK you want Ron here more. That's up to him...

A free bed...really?

I've just booked my flight from Phoenix to Manchester. Arr on 12/15 and depart on 12/18. The Concord office said to stay at the Red Roof in Loudon. Are you serious about a bedroom? I clean up pretty well and will promise to do so just prior to arrival. Let me know. If you're fully booked that's OK.

"What have you done for Ron Paul today"?

Hi Joe

I have someone else who emailed me already, but I haven't nailed down the details. Shoot me an email to krmurphy1975 AT gmail.com and I'll let you know if I can do it. For that matter, I have a nice futon, so that's always an option, too. My place is 25 minutes from Concord and 10 minutes from downtown Manchester.

Keith

thanks...

...keith for the suggestions and the offer of bed(s). both very helpful.

#1 reason is B.S. -- Ron Paul spends a TON of time in NH. He's been living in the state for the last three days and will slipt time between - Iowa, NH, SC, and NV.
