WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating the hanging death of a U.S. Census worker near a Kentucky cemetery, and a law enforcement official told The Associated Press the word 'fed" was scrawled on the dead man's chest.
The body of Bill Sparkman, a 51-year-old part-time Census field worker and occasional teacher, was found Sept. 12 in a remote patch of the Daniel Boone National Forest in rural southeast Kentucky. The Census has suspended door-to-door interviews in rural Clay County, where the body was found, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether the death was a killing or a suicide, and if a killing, whether the motive was related to his government job or to anti-government sentiment.
Investigators have said little about the case. The law enforcement official, who was not authorized to discuss the case and requested anonymity, said Wednesday the man was found hanging from a tree and the word "fed" was written on the dead man's chest. The official did not say what type of instrument was used to write the word.

It smacks of a red herring. Id be looking at one of his neighbors. I have a suspicion he was killed for something personal and it was staged to look like it was because of his job to throw off the investigation.
Several years ago a NYC crew making a documentary trespassed
on property not too far from there. The owner told the film director to get off his land. The director ignored the order and was shot dead on the spot.
A local man shook his head and said, I wouldn't pick berries on his land unless I asked first. In that part of America disrespect can get you killed. Trespassing is a serious matter.
My guess,
is that its just some local idiot(s) who committed this crime, for mundane reasons, but what is really scary is the reaction of the media, as if it were a crime committed by groups who hate our corrupt government.

Last I knew, Clay Co. KY was third poorest county in the Nation. May be number one by now. There has always been distrust of the 'Fed' back to the days of moonshine and beyond. The classic movie 'Thunder Road' is not far off base. This area is known by locals to be dangerous with drug running and meth labs. 'Shine' is laughed at and ignored by the law these days but murder is not uncommon if the 'fed' gets too close to ones livelihood. These people are in survival mode and events at the federal gov. level are of little concern.

He even compared it to the OKC bombings and the Tea parties!!! Guess what
When I first heard about it, I was visiting my dad in the hospital and heard it on Fox News. They initially reported census worker, "fed" on belly, and location, which isn't much spin except for leaving out info about recent drug raids. Then, they interviewed a fellow census worker about how Mr. Sparkman didn't take him seriously when he said there was anti-census sentiment in the area.
My initial reaction was that it was related to anti-census sentiment - I'm not proud that I can still react that way to TV propaganda, but, you know if I'm vulnerable to it, the masses are already sold and won't be unsold.

This had nothing to do with the census. A casually-dressed guy showed up at a meth-amphetamine dealer's house with an outsider's accent.

It is common
for big city mafia-types to retire to that area. My guess is that, during prohibition, they learned how people in the area take "no trespassing" signs VERY seriously. When people want to be left alone, people respect it there.
If you walk past a "No Trespassing" sign there, it's not bad etiquette for the property owner to greet you with a gun.
During prohibition, the feds gave the people there good reason to stand up for their own privacy.
They want to blame it on Beck? Does that mean they should get a warrant for whoever has a satellite dish? Come on, anti-fed sentiment runs deeply in that area.

They can't find
the marijuana "dealers" in that area. It is routine to grow the marijuana on someone else's property.
By dealers, they mean meth-amphetamine, oxycontin, that sort of thing. Regular-looking folks will approach dealers at their homes.
I can see how a census worker showing up with an outsider's accent could put one of these dealers on alert.

Could be. There are also sites in Kentucky and eastern
Tennessee (other places too) where folks engage in private refinement of liquid chemical substances and, historically speaking, they have not, as a group, been known to voluntarily develop close working relationships with federal employees. There's not really enough fact yet in order to pick a defendable conclusion.

with the sentiments you have expressed.
Being a group of independent folks we have a range of views on GOV in General and different Depts/Agencies in particular but I know all of us are outraged by senseless, cold blooded murder. This mans right to Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness was violated in the most vile manner, regardless the motive.
I am also certain we, to a person, are saddened for all his loved ones and wish them comfort in this terrible time.

What Might Be the Repercussions?
This incident is already being used to gin up hatred against those who do not wish to be Communists. The government and media will continue to tar the 50% of Americans who have a negative opinion of Obama and his policies as insane racists.
This group, comprised of half the US population knows that they are neither insane nor racist. There will be an initial pull back due to the horror of this incident, but in the long run freedom loving Americans will become even more upset as the government and media slanders their character and hacks away at their liberties.
This isn't like the fairy tale split between "red" and "blue" America which was a fantasy created to perpetuate the false dichotomy of right vs. left. This is a real split between those who want to live in a Communist nation and those who want to remain free.
Those who involve themselves in political activities are radicalized by the process. While the government and media will use incidents such as this one to attack our freedoms, the result will be that the lovers of liberty will demand more freedom, not less.
