Report From The Pittsburgh G20 Summit: Day 1
Submitted by Giordano on Thu, 09/24/2009 - 20:56
Walking downtown Pittsburgh today was like entering the Twilight Zone. The city was essentially at a standstill. Every road was edged with barricades, Blackhawk helicopters circled overhead, DHS agents with their insignia laden t-shirts and thigh holstered 9mm pistols chatted it up with National Guardsmen and walking stereotype spooks in sunglasses, suits, and earpiece radios. This was the closest thing to Martial Law that I had ever seen in my life, although I have the distinct feeling such sights will be more commonplace in the next few years. For a liberty lover like myself, this was stewed hell materialized in my cereal bowl, and I was losing my morning appetite...............

What should give everyone concern
Is the fact these cops/military are doing this at all. Some of us are sick of the pathetic show. Want these assholes to understand who it is that pays their bills. Last I checked these people were OUR SERVANTS. If they're answering to G-20 party goers then we need to understand that point and make one of our own. What would these fools do with 2-3 million pissed off Americans running up their asses, some armed..They'd sh#t themselves like the cowards they are..It's time for that to come to fruition. I for one, am tired of being shat on..How about you ?
Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow
Thanks Gio!

Come on guys wake up, some of you sound really nieve!
The only violence that is occurring down there is by FAKE anarchist paid to do this crap or cops and military dressed like protesters just like what happened in Seattle in 99. They do this EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a protest against globalism. Thus, they CONTROL the situation and give themselves carte blanche to WHATEVER THEY WANT to everybody else. Some of the comments I am reading on daily paul about this subject are so pollyanna its unbelievable. Its nothing but a bunch of THUGS dressed up like something out of SCI FI MOVIE.
I grew up on Science Fiction, that doesn't mean I want to live it!!!
Not everything is a conspiracy, EchoPlaza.........
There are very real Anarchist groups and others who are protesting here. The last group that police attacked was about one thousand strong. Are you saying that all those people are Government agents? Now who's naive? I realize the government does use agents posing as protesters, but in small groups, not large ones. I'm here in the city now and I can tell you that there are many people protesting who are not paid by the feds, so lets not get carried away.
Here's the "M.O".
There are a relatively small group or groups of agent provocateurs.
They perpetrate some violent activity or damage.
Then that gives the "carte blanche" to the gendarme to disperse or beat up the rest of the crowd.
Result: End of protest, demonstration of power and control, events go on as normal.
Wash, rinse, and repeat.
I don't know how far any damage or violence got in this particular situation, but if there was any, it was likely via this method.
best article ive read in months
thank you for the news.
Does anyone know who that guy was that was ripped

Good work, Man
we need reports from the frontline. Interesting observation with the bridges of Pittsburgh and how it becomes a fortress of sorts. Those filthy buggers are brilliant. Be ever mindful of that.
I am sorry..but this is what
I am sorry..but this is what is awaiting for all of us...Don't be scared...you should all be aware of it. If you do not resist it..then in a small way you are condoning it. The only governing law is the CONSTITUTION!!!! Period. Remember that! Tyranny will not prevail. Just remember what the founding fathers said and felt in their hearts.
It's going to be terrible, but it has to be done for my sons!!
From what I understand this was a....
peaceful protest, until the authorities told these individuals to leave. From a personal standpoint, the authorities have commited a civil crime. These individuals were not causing problems, but the the authorities did not want them there, and started to use pepper spray to make them go away. I think that was wrong. We as Americans have the right, and yes I say the right, to protest peacefully, and that is what these people were doing until they were met with combative forces. I say when that happens they have the right to fight back, and that is what they did.
Exactly!
I'm glad most people here are getting why this is so screwed up.
I enjoyed your article
I enjoyed your article fellow yinzer. However, I love this rotten place. Most people who move away, move back. It's the only city with a homey family feel.
There are reasons for the extra security.
Not just there because of the protesters. Besides, some of the protesters were being asses, they went through a residential area knocking down the personal property of residents, they broke ten windows at a Boston Market while people were still inside, did those people deserve to feel threatened? They were probably just people trying to earn a living on $7.50 an hour. They broke windows of a car dealership. There are 2 sides to the story, most of the protesters were peaceful, and were not confronted by police. The police, as I heard from people I know who were there, were trying to be very reasonable, but could not be wimps either. I happen to disagree with your assesment of Pittsburgh, I think it is quite a nice city, I have lived in NYC and Boston, though I liked those cities as well in their own way, Pittsburgh has a lot to offer. The people there are the best, and the cost of living doesn't kill you.
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
Actually....
My reports from people who were there but not involved in the protest said that the group was marching and not touching a thing until cops in riot gear created a wall and wouldn't allow then to go anywhere. The cops then told them since they "didn't have a permit" they had to disperse. Then, the protester got pissed and started smashing things. Which frankly, I don't blame them. Nowhere in the Constitution does it say you need a "permit" to publicly assemble and address grievances. I would be angry too. The cops are not letting ANY significant protest anywhere near downtown. Its the worst activist environment I've ever seen.
Also, I lived in a LOT of cities. Pittsburgh is not the worst, but the majority of the people have the worst attitude. I can't tell you how many times I've heard a yinzer suggest that they drown all the protesters in the river. And their pride in this city is completely overblown. I suspect as compensation for any lack of worldly experience, since many people here were born here and have never left.
In defense of Pittsburgh
Why shouldn't we be proud that we've turned our local economy around? Why shouldn't we be proud that our local employment rate and housing market have remained steady during the past year while the rest of the country has been hit hard by the recession? When you look at how Detroit and other rust belt cities have dealt with the collapse of local industry, how they let their cities rot away while hoping that the car/steel/manufacturing plants will magically reappear, I think we should be very proud that we didn't let that happen to us.
Do I think the G-20 will turn into an international hotspot? No, of course not, and I don't know a single person here who does. However, a lot of Americans are still under the impression that Pittsburgh is still the smokey, polluted manufacturing town that it once was. They have no idea that we're one of the "greenest" cities in the country, and have some of the best education and medical facilities in the world. I think that the extra attention from the G-20 will finally shatter the old stereotype once and for all, and for the longterm benefit of the region. We need and deserve good PR.
And before you marginalize me as an ignorant Yinzer (btw, I thought casting everyone who disagrees with you as an uneducated idiot was something only smug liberals did), I've spent more decades living in New York and Washington DC than I have in Pittsburgh. I just think this city gets an unfair rap from outsiders who have never personally been here, and bitter locals who wouldn't be happy anywhere.
Americans do not have to obtained a permit...
to protest peacefully. These thugs were wrong to do what they did to the protesters.
Think about what you just said...
"The cops then told them since they "didn't have a permit" they had to disperse. Then, the protester got pissed and started smashing things."
So by your logic, you wouldn't blame me for busting up YOUR private property, or your business, if the cops didn't let me have my way? Are you a teenager by any chance?
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
You're letting your bias get in the way......
You're obviously not thinking this through. If the cops had left them alone, there wouldn't have been a problem. Your comparison doesn't make sense. The city streets are PUBLIC property, not private, and they had every right to be there. I'm not saying I LIKE that they smashed things in response, but I understand why they became angry. If you smashed my store window because the cops wouldn't let you practice your right to free speech and started lobbing gas at you, then I wouldn't be happy about it, but I would blame the cops more than you for creating the situation in the first place. If you want to defend the cops for what they do, that's fine. I expect you'll get the same treatment from them one day when YOU want to speak your mind about something publicly.
And no, I am not a teenager, I am a 28 year old man. Are you a teenager? Because your conclusions are very linear and one sided.........
I am not being one sided on this.
I very well know that police often overstep their authority, and have been detained for protesting (and inciting a riot, once) on many occasions going back to when you were still in diapers. If I was taking any side it was that of the private property and business owners, and I gave an account of what a friend of mine who is there experienced and witnessed on police action where he was. This evening, they showed a much more aggressive action by the police and the arrest of the bicyclist, now it is getting much worse it appears.
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
I agree....
The property owners are innocent and caught in the middle, and its terrible for them, I know. I suppose my position is, if the police had left the protesters alone, those people's store fronts would have most likely been fine. The police are creating incidences through their own actions, then all the blame is placed on the protesters who react. Its kind of like invading Iraq, then labeling the people who fight back as "terrorists". If we weren't there in the first place, would they still be terrorists?
Also, as much as I feel for the property owners, there are things going on in the world much bigger than their store windows being broken. Unless people start dissenting now en mass and stop the globalists, I'm afraid they won't have a store left to protect.
Agreed.
Sorry if I came off as harsh, perhaps I'm just an old punk gone soft! : )
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
"Truth is treason in the Empire of Lies."
No problem
I understand. Its a a touchy issue with a lot of sides to it. Especially when its happening in your own city!

and I tell him all the time that he is protecting the very people cutting his pay, and taking our liberties. He says as long as I can feed my family, and I say, someday it may make it so you won't be able to. Losing battle with him, he knows what is coming but refuses to believe it.
