The Craziest Town Hall Ever: The Daily Beast Reviews Paul/Bachmann event at University of Minnesota
What happens when ultra-religious neocon Michele Bachmann co-hosts a town hall with anti-authority libertarian Ron Paul? Wingnut worlds collide. Maureen O'Connor reports.
Ask a liberal to describe a “crazy Republican,” and their description is likely to fit one of two archetypes. First and most classically would be the fanatically religious Bush-era neocon, a flag-waving patriot who likens gay sex to bestiality and fantasizes about lobbing nukes at Iran. The second, newer iteration would be members of the “Ron Paul Revolution.” Though Rep. Ron Paul’s philosophy is grounded in Constitutional libertarianism, he is also notorious for attracting conspiracy theorists and people who own multiple assault rifles.
Logically, the camps are mutually exclusive; “family values libertarian” is practically an oxymoron. But on Friday night Congress’ evangelical mascot du jour, Rep. Michele Bachmann, nevertheless co-hosted a town hall meeting with Paul at the University of Minnesota’s Northrop Auditorium, drawing 2,000 people and marking a tenuous foray into a potent—if paradoxical—political syncretism.
Her voice rising to a high-pitched chant, Bachmann ticked off the list of financial aggressors: “Income tax, property tax, gas tax, sales tax—everytime-you-turn-around tax!”
In the hours leading up to meeting’s start, activists waved signs and stood in clusters of like-minded people. A trio of men wearing black 9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB t-shirts handed out DVDs explaining various conspiracy theories. A lone drummer, dressed in full Revolutionary garb and a white powdered wig, marched back and forth across the plaza without speaking to anyone.
Fresh from the introduction of HR1207, a bill to audit the Federal Reserve, Bachmann and Paul arrived at Northrop to paint a portrait of financial dystopia where “100 percent of your paycheck is being spoken for.” Bachmann predicts this will happen some time around 2050. Her voice rising to a high-pitched chant, she ticked off the list of financial aggressors: “Income tax, property tax, gas tax, sales tax--everytime-you-turn-around tax!” Meanwhile, over at the United Nations (the very mention of which drew a chorus of boos), they’ll likely work with China and Japan to “insist on replacing the American dollar with the international one-world currency.” More boos, and some emphatic waving of handheld American flags.
The Federal Reserve audit, she explained, would “pull back the curtain” on the shadowy organization that controls the value of the dollar. Two-thirds of the House support the bill, including the Financial Services Committee’s famously liberal chairman, Rep. Barney Frank. During the Q&A session, Paul explains that, though an audit is far more modest than his goal—End the Fed is the title of his new book—once everyone sees how dirty the Fed is, “the next thing that happens is the Federal Reserve is over.”

It's cool that Dr Paul hosts a "Monetary Policy Lunch Circle"
He's the man. Teaching congressmembers. What a kook.

Maureen = Conspiracy Theorist
Maureen seems convinced that the murder of the census taker had something to do with the likes of Bachman and Paul as opposed to, say, federal revenuers. Maybe she wasn't listening to the part of the speech concerning the war on drugs.
Maureen seems a bit nervous about Ron Paul's ideas about liberty expanding to a wider venue. She flails about trying to diminish Ron Paul by calling him a wing nut who attracts conspiracy theorists and people who own multiple assault rifles. All she can muster to back her claim is seeing three peaceful 9/11 activists and a drummer. This woman really isn't ready for diversity - or, worse yet, liberty.

Can take her wingnuts and shove them up her #ss...F##K you Maureen..
Sorry people were having their guts (and rights) kicked around in Pittsburgh yesterday by police there with the help of American military. On your dollar by the way people ... my patience for socialists is at an end. My patience for idiotic bullies beating people for no reason other than to protect a bunch of criminals is at an end. Again Maureen F##K You !!!!
Just one last kick in the nuts, then a final deathblow
I will second your opinion

People change
People change. That includes media personalities and politicians too.
We should probably give them just a little slack when they appear to be improving.

I can't wait for the audit.
Since the "job" of the "FED" is to stabilize the dollar, haven't they failed utterly since their inception? The Dollar has lost at least 96% of it's value since the "FED" was started. I think all the "FED" members, board members still alive should be fired, tried and jailed for taking trillions of dollars and completely and totally failing to do the job our rotten Con-Gress created them to do. Hang them all!!
When you have someone like Bachmann really listening to Dr. Paul
I think the Republican establishment is going to get nervous and this article is good proof of it. Bachmann has her faults, but she is on the right track. I was down after the primaries, but the Ron Paul Revolution is really catching on and it is scaring the hell out of the establishment.

Good for all opinions to be heard
We all know the neo-con line.
Many of us were neo-cons until we woke up.
Learning about Liberty and Freedom takes time and doesn't happen immediately. A good beginning is to discover the truth for yourself and not to listen to opinions, not based in fact, of others.
The meeting wasn't a "town hall" meeting. It's mistaken to associate that with the YAL at the University.
It's wasn't a "crazy" meeting either.
You'll notice that no one was tazed, beaten, tear gassed or arrested.
It sounded like an enjoyable time.
Anyone see any 'handheld flags' in the youtube?
I just saw placards and only at the start of speech. Anyway only one sounding 'shrill' is the author of this review.
