Massive Marijuana Civil Disobedience in Keene, New Hampshire!
"When you let people do whatever they want, you get Woodstock. When you let governments do whatever they want, you get Auschwitz."
Freedom Lovers, Free State Project participants and Pro-Marijuana advocates have been gathering daily for the past week, each day at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana (and peppermint cloves to confuse the police, lol) in protest of the war on drugs.
So far only two arrests have been made, despite hundreds of people smoking marijuana.
Here's the Keene Sentinel's article about yesterday's Protest:
By Anika Clark, Sentinel Staff
Published: Sunday, September 27, 2009An ongoing marijuana protest in Keene’s Central Square came to a head Saturday afternoon, as police made their first drug-related arrest since the group started gathering several days ago.
Protesters yelled everything from “Leave him alone!” to “This is how they did it in Nazi Germany!” as police took 40-year-old Richard G. Paul into custody.
Protesters advocating marijuana’s legalization were also joined on the square Saturday by several adults and children who held signs favoring drug control.
On Friday, Paul told The Sentinel he was one of the first people to meet on the square to smoke marijuana every day at 4:20 p.m. — a number identified with cannabis in marijuana subculture.
Lt. Shane C. Maxfield said Paul’s arrest on Saturday was for marijuana possession after he allegedly blew smoke into an officer’s face.
More than 50 rally-goers followed Paul and the officers to the police station at 350 Marlboro St., where at least one shouted protests through the door to the booking room and others sat, smoking, in a circle in a restricted area of the parking lot.
Although many of protesters have said they support legalizing marijuana — and the air above Central Square smelled like pot smoke — numerous people told The Sentinel they haven’t actually been smoking the drug at 4:20.
One man, who refused to identify himself, puffed on a glass pipe in front of a Keene police officer. But after the officer walked away, the man said the pipe was filled with cherry-flavored tobacco.
While sitting on a curb outside the police station, 48-year-old Chaz Munro said he would neither confirm nor deny whether he’d been smoking pot downtown.
Still, he described what he called “fakey bakey,” or substances that look and smell like marijuana.
So why protest pot prohibition by smoking something that isn’t?
“It’ll jam up the system,” said Munro, who wore a bandana over his face. And hopefully, with regards to police enforcement, he added, “It will be more trouble than it’s worth.”
While they moved to let police cruisers pass, the protesters’ smoke circle blocked a portion of the parking lot Saturday afternoon, as officers attempted to go to and from calls.
At one point, Maxfield came out to speak with the crowd and, one by one, fielded questions on everything from the charge Paul faces to whether Maxfield would arrest a cancer patient for smoking marijuana.
Maxfield — who said he wouldn’t arrest the person suffering from cancer — said he personally believes marijuana should be legal. But he told the rally-goers, “there’s a process for getting things changed,” and said that’s where their energy might be better spent.
People can either “yell about (the law)” and “have temper tantrums” or they can work to change it, Maxfield said.
Paul was released at 5:45 p.m. on $1,000 personal recognizance. He is scheduled to be arraigned Nov. 2 in Keene District Court.
More articles and videos including the arrest of 420 Protest starter and Ron Paul supporter Richard Paul are available at the freedom blog FreeKeene.com, who are chronicling the event.

People who use cannabis / all things being equal
have more BRAINS than those who don't. If they don't fill those brains with knowledge that is another story...
Cannabis has more pages written about it than the atom.
I would also suggest, that cannabis protest have happend everyday for the last 35 years. End the war on drugs. Decriminalize.
Cannabis Cures EVERY KIND OF CANCER AND REGROWS NUERONS... ARROGANT, IGNORANT, SELF RIGHTOUS FOOLS...
AT LEAST DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU ARGUE.

These data expand the existing knowledge about the positive roles cannabinoids and their receptors play in brain processing and medicine.
And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”
Nice
Imagine how big the protest would have been if people didn't get lost on the way, forget the date, lock their keys in the car or oversleep! I imagine I would be clubbed to death if I tried that in Jersey.
"they call them fingers but you never see them fing..." -pauses- "...Oh, there they go" -Otto
lmao!
I for one would definitely be late....I'm very easily sidetracked on my way to smoke-in's. :O)
There's more updates to the story at the Free Keene site
If you go to freekeene.com there's more updates to the story. The civil disobedience has spread to Manchester, NH now.
Great video
Those boys in keene sure know how to throw a party!
The police acted like animals, circling their prey and then grabbing it and taking it off to feed on.

Way too subdued.
This gathering was so subdued it nearly put me to sleep. Nice people, though. I would have watched it all, but I felt like I got stoned just watching them.
Anybody got any Cheetos?
The message isn't abouy getting rowdy
The message is about the fact that the state routinely uses violence against peaceful people to achieve it's goals. What better way to illustrate that by demonstrating the truth that the overwhelming majority of those who use marijuana are peaceful?
Don't infer please
I never advocated rowdiness, but standing around talking was boring to watch. My opinion. I'm entitled to it.
New Hampshire police rarely, if ever, use violence. I lived there for years, never saw any police wallop anybody.
Once I was stopped for driving drunk in Milford. The officer could have arrested me, but instead he followed me home, to make sure I got there safely. Then he waved and drove away. Good man.
I drew no such inference, but thanks for clarifying!
And you are most certainly entitled to your opinion. I for one enjoyed standing around chatting with the people present on Sunday in Centrl Square. It made for a nice afternoon & early evening. To each their own.
Sounds like the town
that I grew up in....Stonewall, Ok
In high school we had one particular party house, and when I was finished I would go sleep it off in my pickup...every time I was woken up by a flashlight and some wise crack joke...normally I asked for about another hour of sleep and then he would come back and follow me back to the farm...threaten to wake up my Grandma...tell me to be careful and not to drink and drive...then pull out with all his lights off. Those were the good ole days..back in the late 80's...LOL
A good practise run
I applaud these people. This is a good practise run for the type of thing we will all need to be doing soon in terms of other issues Big Brother will attempt to force upon us, worldwide. Passive resistance, people. Be brave. They can't arrest us all.
Give me LIBERTY!
Why am I not shocked that when a group of liberty activists and some potheads decide that enough is enough and do something so bold as to smoke pot INSIDE THE LOBBY OF A POLICE STATION despite it's status as a controlled and illegal substance so few of you have anything to say?
How many protesters drank inside police stations to protest prohibition? How many colored people used the white bathrooms in police stations to bring an end to segregation? But because this is POT!!! >gasp!!!< you can't get behind those standing up for their rights?
I'll stand with the activists every chance I get.
Great quote at the top!

Rich is fricken hilarious
He's a very very funny guy. He declaration was part serious, part humor.
c'mon people...ridiculous
Is it really necessary to smoke it during a protest? Why not just protest and then go home to your private property and smoke it. IMO, the guy who took his puff right near the cop knew what he was doing, and deserved his arrest. I suppose he was attempting to be the 'martyr'.
I'm a Ron Paul supporter, a former smoker, pro-marijuana advocate, and also the type of person that would be at one of those protests (most likely playing in a drum circle), but I don't believe this is the type of behavior we need. I just don't feel that people wearing Ron Paul shirts in their mug shot is something that reflects the message of Liberty, Peace, and Prosperity.
I 100% agree with Lt. Maxfield. And I think the crowd would agree with him too... once the smoke clears(pun intended ;-p). People like the Lt. are the type of folks we need on our side - not arresting us.
"deserved his arrest"
you've been here over a year and i have never seen you before?
---
he was probably a medical marijuana patient and needed to take his medicine, either way he did not "deserved his arrest".
Ron Paul would not have called for this mans arrest.

C'mon Rosa Parks! Was it really necessary to sit in front?
Really...why didn't she just go to the back of the bus where she belonged? Then she could have just protested at the bus co. HQ later.
As for the guy who puffed a cigarette in front of the officer, I suppose you're right. People deserve to be kidnapped for doing what they wish with their bodies! What nerve!
/end sarcasm
You'll never achieve change by being a coward, and that doesn't mean using violence against people. It means standing up to those who'd use violence against you in a peaceful fashion.
BRAVO...you took the words right out of my mouth.

Thanks.
I'm certain that the majority of times in history that actual social change has been achieved it has been done not to overwhelming cheers but to the moans of the many who can no longer get away with their forced supression of the few.
Would you please stand behind me, none?
I want someone like you covering my backside.
Peace!
Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.
How about next to you?
It's an amazing feeling to just be free and overcome the fear that has been programmed into you.
And I'd stand with anyone willing to stand up for their rights as they stood with me standing up for mine.
inspiring
and truly heroic!
How about a smoke? Inside the Keene PD lobby?
If I hadn't been there to see it for myself I would not have believed it.
Here's a news clip of todays activities. Funny there was no mention of the smoke in at the PD.

inspiring story.

Nice one
I know Keene, NH (though I know Peterborough better). It's a fairly laid-back town, without much of a police force. There is no crime up there to speak of - just a few burgularies and traffic violations.
The police just don't have the resources to handle this kind of thing. And, wisely, they chose not to involve the New Hampshire State Police or the national guard, which they could have done.
But New Hampshire is the "Live Free or Die" state, so the arrests made were probably token. Small fine, with the admonition to 'watch your step' and then the smoker is back with the others.
I don't know what will be gained by this, but I am sure everybody had a fine time. I think similar things happen in Laconia and Meredith when the bikers all get together. They are pretty much left alone. Beside, beer sales skyrocket and the NH economy needs that.
It's more than people getting high
It's not about getting high. It's about standing up for yourself to unjust force and oppression.
Live free.
Fine example
of civil disobedience...and what a marked difference between the attitude and behavior of these police officers when compared to the G-20 Summit police (brutality). The Keene's Central Square police have my respect...
