Sehr Gut! German libertarian party to form coalition government with Merkel's Christian Democrats
Chancellor Angela Merkel will keep her post, even as her conservative Christian Democrats fail to achieve a majority in German elections. The European press is describing the necessary power sharing arrangement as "pro-business" and "tax-cutting". The libertarian Free Democrats and the conservative Christian Democrats both oppose increasing the minimum wage and support reducing taxes, but notably and publicly disagree over the (perpetual) War on Terra. Free Democrats have also criticized Christian Democrat support for protectionism.
This portends well for Germany, Europe, and indeed, the world. Of course, Merkel could well queer the deal if she overplays her hand. She has already indicated that she won't be letting "her new junior partner dictate policy."
Could America soon follow our Teutonic cousins along the road to liberty?

I thought they were liberals not libertarians...

They call themselves "Die
They call themselves "Die Liberalen", that means "the liberals",
but in the original meaning of the word 'liber" = "free"
I always thought it was funny that the word "liberal" had such a different meaning here.
They stand for small gouvernemnt and low taxes, more similar to libertarians actually. But it is still a whole differnet thing than Ron Paul.

FDP libertarian? Come on...
I`m not saying that I do not prefer the current result to some leftist coalition, but to call the FDP "libertarian" is preposterous.
The few libertarians there are in Germany call them "yellow socialists" (their party colour is yellow).
The most libertarian party attending to the election was probably the "Piraten-Partei" (they got 2%, but 13% among first time voters). And they are only "libertarian" in the sense, that they are only against internet-censorship and do not have any other goal yet.
Anyway. If the FDP is "libertarian", then the Republican Party is a bunch of anarchists.

Well, You're right.The FDP
Well, You're right.
The FDP is considered to be the dentist and lawyer party. Elite if You will.
But they definetely have some things in common with the libertarians.
Small gouvernment, low taxes etc.
There is no libertarian party in Germany, the FDP candidates are super establishment. I voted for Merkel. But since I live here in the US I really lost touch with the German politics anyway.
On my ballot I saw the Piraten party, reminded me of the Pogo Party.
FC St. Pauli Punks somewhat.
Nevertheless it is good to be rid of the big coalition.

totally true
The FDP supports "social market principles" and there was a good interview recently in Die Zeit where even an FDP proponent called its arguments "less than clean" in reference to precisely these points. Guido Westerwelle, the head of the party and the man set to become the Foreign Minister, wasn't on the campaign trail talking about how "it's your money and the State is a hungry monster destroying individual property rights!!!" -- instead, it was more like: "The State should own less of you." Totally different perspective than an actual libertarian. We don't believe we're owned by anyone...
Another point has to be made here: the German constitution doesn't allow for the destruction of the Social State. (Art. 20 I GG). It is, albeit with restrictions (fiscal in nature), an "eternal state principle" (Art. 79 III GG) which can't even be changed through a constitutional amendment. So proposing it on the campaign trail would be -- quite frankly -- retarded. Unfortunately, just a fact of life. One can only for financial reasons cut into the social aid budget. The German Constitutional Court has ruled that there is a de facto right out of this eternal state principle and human dignity (Art. 1 GG) to social aid, but that the State must determine the amount.
And as regards foreign policy -- did I mention that he supports being in Afghanistan and speaks often about the West's necessity of defending "order" in that region of the world? Not Germany's Ron Paul. But, all in all, better than "democratic socialism" (Die Linke) from the leftists or "social democracy" from the SPD.
hmm.. interesting.
thanks for the news prof!
I'm so glad!
The last 4 years Merkel had to go into a big coalition with the SPD (equal Dems).
This is usually fruitless for either party because they block each other rather than working together.
The SPD lost 11%!
Merkel's CDU lost just 1,5%.
The "libertarian" Free Democrats gained almost 5% and had their best result ever (I think)
Good times!

This postpones tyranny while more lib members are elected.
