Unemployment: The Gathering Storm
The higher this number goes, the more likely (another) war will begin.
Charles Hugh Smith
September 26, 2009
Officially, 14.9 million Americans are unemployed. That number will double.
The number of people who are unemployed is almost unimaginable: 15 million. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistic's August 2009 Employment Situation Report, 14.9 million persons are unemployed, 9.1 million are "working part time for economic reasons," and 2.3 million are "marginally attached to the labor force," i.e. they wanted a job but have not actively looked for a job in the past four weeks.
That totals 26.3 million people unemployed or under-employed. In January of this year, the Standard Issue Financial Punditry (SIFP) was parroting "official estimates" that the economy would lose 2 million jobs during this recession. I dismantled that absurd fantasy with an analysis of the employment situation which concluded that 21 million jobs lost is actually an optimistic guesstimate compared to what could transpire in the years ahead--a gradual evaporation of 30-35 million jobs. Sadly, the current numbers fall into the range that I suggested was realistic. (The End of (Paying) Work, January 21, 2009)
We need to understand the dynamics behind the unemployment numbers.
1. Some unemployment is normal; people lose a job or quit and then find another one, usually within six months--at least in times of prosperity. So even in prosperity, 5 to 6 million people are "between jobs" and thus officially unemployed while they draw unemployment benefits.
Thus at least 5 million of the 15 million currently unemployed are "baseline" unemployed, the normal shifting and adjusting of thousands of enterprises and 137 million workers (the size of the civilian workforce as of December 2008).
So while the "official" estimate was 2 million people would lose their jobs due to recession, the actual number is already 10 million. At least 2.3 million have given up looking and 9 million more have had their hours slashed. Note to Ministry of Propaganda: you really need to align slightly with reality or you lose all credibility.

PROVERB from Noah Webster:
"A rich man, beginning to fall, is held up by his friends; but a poor man, being down is thrust away by his friends. When a rich man is fallen, he hath many helpers; he speaketh things not to be spoken, and yet men justify him; the poor man slipt, and they rebuked him; he spoke wisely and could have no place.
When a rich man speaketh, every man holdeth his tongue, and lo! what he saith they extol to the clouds; but if a poor man speaks, they say, What fellow is this?"

1960 style civil unrest is the only way to stop this tyrrany.

You could be right
The sixties had mass protests for years and that could start again in the near future.
How?
How will civil unrest help to create new jobs?
Anti-war demonstrations worked somewhat in the Sixties, but the world has changed quite a bit in the past 40 years. Demonstrations no longer have much a real effect, and are pretty much give the illusion of a free society. Now there are 'designated free speech areas.'
I hear
that the federal government is gearing up to do massive hiring for every position you can think of. It will save us!
Let us hope that one of these areas will not be the military...
as in war and a draft.
I believe that is coming
With the compulsory service being prepared. That is nothing more than psychological programming for full military service, IMO.
Dr. Paul has predicted a draft. His predictions have historically turned out to be correct.
Most Americans are in denial, especially Obama supporters.

The communist plank I remember is the control of all production, because with little or no production we're like an out of fuel diesel truck stuck in mud with a perish able load of fish.

10 Conditions For Transition To Communism
1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents of land to public purposes.
2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
5. Centralisation of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
6. Centralisation of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the State.
7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of waste-lands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
8. Equal liability of all to labour. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction between town and country, by a more equitable distribution of the population over the country.
10. Free education for all children in public schools. Abolition of children's factory labour in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production.[7]
According to the Communist Manifesto, all these were prior conditions for a transition from capitalism to communism, but Marx and Engels later expressed a desire to modernize this passage.[8]

Add in "employed" but slow at work
I'm sort of self employed and my income has been down ~2/3rds for the last few months. ;-(
I'm sure there are lots of other people who still have jobs but reduced hours/pay.
How about considering the higher the number goes the more
likely is civil disorder (revolution, civil war, succession)!
There are two possible ways that crisis periods resolve in violence. One is internal violence and the other is external violence.
Of the three most previous nation threatening crises, two were resolved in civil conflict (1776 American Revolution and 1861 Civil War). Only one was resolved in external war (WWII). Notice the regularity with which these crises occur.
So I would say that it is a very limited vision to think that the anger, desperation, and resentment that arises during the crisis period will successfully be deflected by those in power onto "foreign enemies".
For one thing, without sufficient oil, the US cannot possibly win a war with a foreign enemy, and we now import 60% of the oil we burn. We can only defeat those who are the underdeveloped part of the world, which is why the bullies in Washington don't mess with those who can really fight back. We are collapsing headlong into our new status as a submerging nation as compared to others who are emerging nations. And when you consider the anti government sentiment that exist now, when we are just here in the beginning of the greatest financial and economic debacle in history, you can imagine what sentiment will be like after a few more years of severe economic contraction. Unemployment today in real rates, is about double what it was at the equivalent point in the development of the 1930's depression and back then it finally got to 25% four years into the contraction. This time 50% would not surprise me. Certainly the levels of collapsing debt this time are gargantuan compared to the 1930's.
Abortive attempts at unsuccessful foreign wars can just add to the potential for civil war at home, which is what the current misadventures in the Middle East may participate.

Henry: Understood and spoken by a true patriot.
A civil war to remove the trash IS the best option if there is a war, and I agree with you. However, I wrote that comment from the stand point of the Obamabots. What will they do?
If the dollar goes bust before a world conflict erupts, then the chances are much better for civil unrest to predominate. These people behind the curtain obviously wouldn't want that to occur, so the orchestration of these events is critical from their stand point. I don't know if the great majority have it in them to do as you recommend.
If the people have been sufficiently dumbed-down, then the techniques used by Hitler of blaming others, both foreign and domestic, for any problems seen in Germany will also work here.
This possible civil war would be waged by the people, and it would directed against the government. Do you believe that there would be battle lines other than the people versus the government?
Battle lines would exist between citizen and citizen.
If you look at the American Revolution in 1776 some Colonist fought with the British or at least did what they could to help the British. And if you look at border states like Missouri in the 1861 Civil War, there what plenty of killing by civilians of one another. Bushwhackers with Confederate allegiances roamed the rural areas often plundering or killing Unionists in additions to raids on Union soldiers and Missouri Homeguard; a few of the more notorious were William Quantrill, Jesse James, Coleman Younger, and Sam Hildebrand. (If you come across the movie, "Ride with the Devil" I think you would find it interesting.)
The thin veil of cordiality that now exists between supporters of the government and opponents will melt away at some point.

as the government falls
as the government falls short in tax revenue and its payouts increase, unemployment.. the government turns to the printing press to pay its bills.. thus destroying the currency.. hyperinflation.

Some of you could relocate to Oklahoma..
My Grandma always says.."What depression?...we don't remember a depression...we worked hard, were thrifty, farmed, raised cattle, fed our neighbors, and wore hand me downs..same thing we would have done without 'their' depression."
It's the same thing now...we've battened down the hatches on spending, we're following a strict budget, getting our land paid off and planning on how to get the most out of 40 acres in the coming years. Our "dream home" is being traded in for a cabin that will some day be the dream garage that is connected to our dream home...if that day ever gets to come. Either way our bellies will be full, our neighbors and friends will be fed, and we will gain more friends and that community spirit that once was strong in America.
It isn't going to all be bad my friends, there will be good come of this.
BTW..The Chickasaw tribe is headquartered here and has pretty much taken over the town. All the infrastructure is in place for a new government if need be...all paid in full by the gambling habits of the white man.
Full Disclosure: I'm a whole 5/256 Choctaw and a card carrying CDIB member of the tribe. Just hope I don't ever lose a finger or something because they might yank my "benefits"..LOL

I have some Choctaw heritage myself and call Stratford, Oklahoma my home town.

Freedom, Prosperity and Peace
I live in a small
town in southern Ohio. I have lived here for eleven years. Most of the people in this town worked in the automotive or steel industry. Most of the jobs have gone away....as have the small businesses that supported them. I have never in my 47 years of life seen a town go bust so fast...we are not far from being a shantytown. If the rest of America goes the way our town has gone....it will be over. The jobs we have lost here are never coming back and most people know that. It is a sad state of affairs. If you are looking for work..do not come to south west Ohio...you will find nothing here.
The government created this problem and they are all to ...
willing to help solve it.
The easiest and best solution would have been to stop all income taxes and payments to social security. A pipe dream I know, but that would have given everyone back their own money to help get them on their feet again. They obviously didn't want to do that or else they would have.
Very sad to hear about your town.
Yes but even so
Think of all the jobs the stimulus SAVED.........hahahahaha
