American Samoa: 8.3 mag Earthquake, Tsunami warning

I wanted to post this, for our worldwide readers, and our Hawaii readers.
quake was originally listed as 7.9, but has been upgraded.
Sea level readings indicate a Tsunami wave has been generated.

I know this isn't Indonesia, but wasn't there a 8+ warning issue
last week or early this week for the region?
Seems they may have stumbled on to something.
I think this would be the fourth or fifth quake over 7.0 in three weeks and the second tsunami in Samoa in that same time.

From a telephone call to Samoa.
In the village of Mulivai in Safata district of Upolo Island Samoa, one woman 75 years old, from the Mauga family, said the sea water reached up to her airmpits and was still rising when her and her 60 year old neighbor managed to climb up a tree and hang on until the water receded.
They then walked quickly to higher ground about a mile away.

Water was still receding hours after the Tsunami wave hit. Beach front villages surround the 3 inhabited islands of Samoa which are named Savaii, Upolo, and Manono islands. Many areas are remote and information is very sketchy at this time. Most inland roads are open.

Deaths or not?
Yahoo (16 min. ago) front page is reporting no deaths in today's earthquake/tsunami but MSNBC David Schuster is reporting there are deaths.

Un-confirmed from a telephone call to Samoa.
3 little kids ages unknown were reported by word of mouth, killed on the island of Upolu, Samoa, on the south coast in the village of Falealili.
The tsunami water went approximately 500 yards inland and the ground shook like crazy.
People were naturally terrified !
Other reports say, coastal beach Fale's were washed away in Samoa.
Our 35 year old contact said it was the worst earthquake she had ever experienced.

Domino effect -
Don't earthquakes do that? There was that huge earthquake in the Phillipines a couple of days ago that killed 200+ people which is not terribly far away from Samoa. Those plates would cause under-earthcrust shift & radiate probably starting this one & get closer to Hawaii. Don't see why it wouldn't continue to radiate. An 8.3 is HUGE & would almost guarantee plate-shifting.

My brother said another small one went off as well (hes in hawaii), and yes they get bigger and stroger (the wave) as they travel across deeper waters.

My mom and brother live in
My mom and brother live in hawaii and they both work up on the mountain, the house however is on the beach.
Usually a tsunami that far away generates a lot of strength the more it travels, so we will see.

and will it hit California in Tsunami form? It said that it happened three hours ago. at EST 12:48. It's 3:45. It would have already hit by now wouldn't it?
That's right off of Australia. If it does hit Cali it will be within 5 hours. Has anyone else heard if it has hit Australia?

Tsunami Strikes American Samoa After 7.9-Magnitude Quake

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — DEVELOPING: A tsunami swept into Pago Pago, American Samoa, shortly after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 erupted in the area.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage Tuesday.
Fili Sagapolutele, who works at the Samoa News, says the water flowed inland about 100 yards before receding, leaving some cars stuck in the mud.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu issued a tsunami warning for American Samoa and other areas of the Pacific, including New Zealand. A tsunami watch was posted for other areas, including Hawaii and the Marshall Islands.
American Samoa is a U.S. territory located in the South Pacific, about 2,300 miles south of Hawaii.

But yes, there is lots of activity in the area.
Glad my parents cancelled
their trip to Hawaii!
