President of European Union : Lisbon treaty, take 2
France and Germany are reportedly planning a new treaty of friendship, which could give each country the power to assign ministers to each other's Cabinets.
Citing sources close to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the Times said on Thursday the treaty 'covers defense, immigration, a new industrial policy'.
The treaty is also drive to 'loosen' what the two neighbors see as the United Kingdom's 'grip on the European Commission'.
The proposed Franco-German deal, reportedly hammered out in secret last spring, involves all main ministries within the two countries.
The new axis is expected to oppose the nomination of former British prime minister Tony Blair as the first president of the EU, diplomats said.
The post opens if Ireland ratifies the Lisbon treaty in a referendum expected to be held on Friday.
Felipe Gonzalez, the former Socialist Prime Minister of Spain, and Jean-Claude Juncker, the long-serving Prime Minister of Luxembourg have been named as France and Germany's new choices in the 27 member block.
The new pact will create a new 'avant-garde' in an EU that has become diffuse but it is not a return to federal dreams, a diplomat familiar with the issue told the Times.

From a Dutch Perspective
I don't care whom they appoint to be the first Grand Puppet of their European Union project, I will not recognize his legitimacy in any way, shape or form and I will never call him "my president".
The Treason of Lisbon is dead as far as I'm concerned.
Ireland rolled over....
Only one man left standing in the way of Lisbon...

What I say to Vaclav Klaus
DON'T TO IT!!!!!! SAY NO TO "LISBON" and go down in a blaze of glory.
Czech President, Vaclav Klaus is the last one to stand in the way of the EU Lisbon Treaty, which changes many things, including creating the position of European Union President.
Last year, the Irish referendum easily voted down the treaty, Ireland proving to be the stumbling block for Lisbon. This year, Ireland rolled over, due to the economic volatility that has left Ireland in bad shape and needing the help of the EU. Which makes me think of the quote:
"...first by inflation and then by deflation, the [central] banks and corporations that will grow up [around the central banks], will deprive the people of their property until their children will wake up homeless..." --Thomas Jefferson
That leaves only a single man who has taken a stand against one of the last pieces of the puzzle, that will complete the EU's multi-decade birth.

Of course, this is a done deal. Vaclav has a better chance of doing a triple back flip, then stopping Lisbon by his lonesome.
Meanwhile Germany and France aren't standing around waiting for Tony Blair, to walk into the newly created position of EU President...
