Sane Parenting--"Free Range Kids"
I just heard about the book, "Free Range Kids," and found out it started off life as a blog. Do any of you share this philosophy? I do...shh...don't tell anybody :)
From FreeRangeKids:
Do you ever…
..let your kid ride a bike to the library? Walk alone to school? Take a bus, solo? Or are you thinking about it? If so, you are raising a Free Range Kid! At Free Range, we believe in safe kids. We believe in helmets, car seats and safety belts. We do NOT believe that every time school age children go outside, they need a security detail. Most of us grew up Free Range and lived to tell the tale. Our kids deserve no less. This site dedicated to sane parenting. Share your stories, tell your tips and maybe one day I will try to collect them in a book. Meantime, let's try to help our kids embrace life!

Thanks for the link, amica!
I'm sending it on to my daughter. I'm afraid her son (my 6 year old grandson) is going to break her heart someday when she tries to follow him to college so she can do his laundry!

It is good and proper to respect the U.S. flag, perpetuated with the blood of American heroes. It is a fatal mistake not to recognize those who wrap themselves in the same flag to cover up their crimes against the American people.

Thank you amica, that is a wonderful
site. Free the children!
I was...
but don't see letting my kids be. Things seem different these days, more predators. I grew up in a very small town (10k), and now live in a small city (200k). I trust my kids, but don't trust others to look out for them.
Imagine the horror of knowing some perv has your kid?

We don't know how to mind our own business
'Cause the whole worlds got to be just like us
Now we are fighting a war over there
No matter who's the winner
We can't pay the cost
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
'Cause there's a monster on the loose
I was a free range kid. And I turned out perfect. *L'
Of childhood and bandaids . . .
how precious and unique . . .
Of tears and sour things . . .
as we learned about technique.
And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”
Thank you for this site!
I wholeheartedly AGREE!! Raising your kids these days is EVERYONE'S business. Kids can't be kids anymore. SUPERvision so strict that children aren't able to experience life without asking for instructions.
When my oldest children were in elementary school, I was told by a school social worker that they were highly functional. She said that was a warning sign to her. A sign of neglect. Neglected children tend to be able to self govern because they have had to take care of themselves without parental supervision. I said..."Isn't that the goal?"
The more I think about this subject the more it makes sense. Provide lots of fear and guilt propaganda so that it disables the ability of parents to allow children freedom. Freedom to self govern, to truly know who they are without being told. More sheep for the corral.
very nice
I sure like this concept. It seems like it strikes at the libertarian spirit.
Just an observation: I live in a very small town, and kids walk to school if they live nearby. A lot of kids are driven into school by parents, and there is the typical bus service.
But you hardly ever seen kids out and about...just exploring around. In the two years I've lived here, I can only think of two examples. The first, some boys were shooting BB guns at a baseball field's signs, and the second, a group of small kids led by an older girl were walking around in a ditch behind a fence.
I'm outside all the time; you'd think I'd see kids more often out playing, but even in a small ranching community, it is rare.
In my vision of a better world, the "popsickle index" would favor the individual liberty-out in nature-explorations of children.
Thanks amica
I have 4 grown children and 9 grand children. I posted the site on FaceBook. :o)
I just sent the link to my kids..... marvelous concepts
