Former Japanese finance minister Shoichi Nakagawa found deadSubmitted by doctor011 on Sun, 10/04/2009 - 17:57
Shoichi Nakagawa, the former Japanese finance minister whose political career collapsed after he appeared incapably drunk at an international press conference, was found dead in his bed this morning beside packets of sleeping pills.
An initial examination revealed that Mr Nakagawa, 56, was suffering from circulatory disease and had traces of alcohol in his body. But given the humiliations which he suffered after the drunken debacle in Rome last February, there will be widespread speculation that he committed suicide.
Video of his performance at the press conference, during which he slurred his speech, misunderstood questions, and appeared to nod off, was broadcast across the world. Despite claiming to be suffering from the intoxicating effects of cough medicine, Mr Nakagawa resigned a few days later.
