Krugman: Conservative Movement "Has The Emotional Maturity Of A Bratty 13-Year-Old"
The Politics of Spite
By PAUL KRUGMAN

There was what President Obama likes to call a teachable moment last week, when the International Olympic Committee rejected Chicago’s bid to be host of the 2016 Summer Games.

“Cheers erupted” at the headquarters of the conservative Weekly Standard, according to a blog post by a member of the magazine’s staff, with the headline “Obama loses! Obama loses!” Rush Limbaugh declared himself “gleeful.” “World Rejects Obama,” gloated the Drudge Report. And so on.

So what did we learn from this moment? For one thing, we learned that the modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional maturity of a bratty 13-year-old.

But more important, the episode illustrated an essential truth about the state of American politics: at this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. If Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America.

To be sure, while celebrating America’s rebuff by the Olympic Committee was puerile, it didn’t do any real harm. But the same principle of spite has determined Republican positions on more serious matters, with potentially serious consequences — in particular, in the debate over health care reform.

Now, it’s understandable that many Republicans oppose Democratic plans to extend insurance coverage — just as most Democrats opposed President Bush’s attempt to convert Social Security into a sort of giant 401(k). The two parties do, after all, have different philosophies about the appropriate role of government.

But the tactics of the two parties have been different. In 2005, when Democrats campaigned against Social Security privatization, their arguments were consistent with their underlying ideology: they argued that replacing guaranteed benefits with private accounts would expose retirees to too much risk.

The Republican campaign against health care reform, by contrast, has shown no such consistency. For the main G.O.P. line of attack is the claim — based mainly on lies about death panels and so on — that reform will undermine Medicare. And this line of attack is utterly at odds both with the party’s traditions and with what conservatives claim to believe.

Think about just how bizarre it is for Republicans to position themselves as the defenders of unrestricted Medicare spending. First of all, the modern G.O.P. considers itself the party of Ronald Reagan — and Reagan was a fierce opponent of Medicare’s creation, warning that it would destroy American freedom. (Honest.) In the 1990s, Newt Gingrich tried to force drastic cuts in Medicare financing. And in recent years, Republicans have repeatedly decried the growth in entitlement spending — growth that is largely driven by rising health care costs.

But the Obama administration’s plan to expand coverage relies in part on savings from Medicare. And since the G.O.P. opposes anything that might be good for Mr. Obama, it has become the passionate d

I've enjoyed ignoring Paul Krugman

ever since he wrote an 8 page op-ed about "Why Economists Didn't Predict the Collapse" and childishly refused to acknowledge those who DID. He's not worth my time.

If conservatives display 13 year old spiteful behavior I say

the lefties or progressives display the idealistic behavior of seven year olds, and would not be very incorrect in doing so. "Yes, we can have it all, the evil and greedy producers of society will pay for it all after we take it from them!"

C'mon, this is Krugman, people. What would you expect, to get that five minutes of your life back after reading his op-ed?

Sorry, not happening.

By chance, he has said

By chance, he has said something that's true. I have not read the article and won't, but I'll venture the wild guess there's a lot of garbage in it too. The simile may not win any literary prizes, but it is apt.

Krugman and NY Times

are hopeless.

As if anybody actually thinks that ANYTHING Obama does could possibly be any good for America!!!?

If it wasn't so sad, it would be laughable.

Not the the Repubs are any better, of course.

For an economist,

Krugman writes a lot of political oped's. Should a Nobel-prize winning scholar be worried about what Rush Limpballs or Drudge thinks? Now he's a health-care expert, an extremely partisan one at that.

I read a lot of Mish and Schiff, and they just don't go there. They will bash whoever is ruining...er running.. the country.

I read his book called

I read his book called "Peddling Prosperity" that he wrote in the early 90's. The whole book is bashing "pundits" who pretend to be economists but are not serious scientists and have an agenda, like Galbraith and Supply Siders. Looking on where he is now, he is a total hypocrite.

.

I can't stand either party.

Prepare & Share the Message of Freedom through Positive-Peaceful-Activism.

But he's got a point.

Although I would say that a Conservative's emotional maturity is closer to a mean spirited 13 year old school yard bully. But I've always said that.

I agree that the cheering

I agree that the cheering over Chicago not getting the olympics was pretty lame. If it wasnt for the Ron Paul rEVOLution, all we would hear is this sort of nonsense.

I don't like he this

I don't like how this economist looks at everything in terms of "winning" or "losing". Forget the weekly standard and limbaugh, Krugman, they have nothing of value to say and you know that. But there are perfectly good arguments to be made why Chicago shouldn't be hosting the Olympics. The Olympics would probably be a much larger liability for the city than it would be beneficial, and they simply can't afford that luxury right now. After all, some of us who don't particularly care that much about the Olympics are happy for the people of Brazil and hope they enjoy themselves.

Being happy that Chicago didn't get granted the Olympics has nothing to do with the president. I don't want political leaders becoming more involved in the process anyway, as this is one thing that they haven't yet completely ruined by getting elected state officials completely involved, and as such, I am disappointed that the president would even involve himself in the first place. But regardless of if he had chosen to travel to lobby for Chicago, myself and many others would have preferred that some other country get the glory this time around so that the city of Chicago spends their time and money improving their city in meaningful and lasting ways rather than building extravagant, unnecessary athletic parks.

Exactly!
