Health officials said Friday that 76 U.S. children have died of swine flu, including 19 new reports in the past week — more evidence the new virus is unusually dangerous for the young.
The regular flu kills between 46 and 88 children a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That suggests deaths from the new H1N1 virus could dramatically outpace children's deaths from seasonal flu, if swine flu continues to spread as it has.
CDC officials say 10 more states, a total of 37, now have widespread swine flu. A week ago, reports suggested that cases might be leveling off and even falling in some areas of the country, but that did not turn out to be an enduring national trend.
"We are seeing more illness, more hospitalizations, and more deaths," the CDC's Dr. Anne Schuchat said at a press conference Friday.
The new virus, first identified in April, is a global epidemic. The CDC doesn't have an exact count of all swine flu deaths and hospitalizations, but existing reports suggest more than 600 have died and more than 9,000 have been hospitalized. Health officials believe millions of Americans have caught the virus.
The virus is hitting young people harder. Experts believe older people are suffering from it less, perhaps because they have a bit of immunity from exposure over the years to somewhat similar viruses.
Most healthy children recover and often suffer only mild symptoms. But some have died from it, often from a second infection that moves in while the body is weakened from the flu.
Kids with asthma or chronic heart or respiratory conditions also are at greater risk for serious complications.
Experts say it's important for parents to watch their children's symptoms carefully. If a child appears to get better, but fever and a cough return, there may be a second infection. Other trouble signs are rapid or difficult breathing or bluish skin color.
Vaccinations against swine flu began this week and so far, states have ordered 3.7 million doses. Demand is exceeding supply, and people seeking the vaccination should ask their state or local health department where to go, said Schuchat, who heads the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases.
Health officials also said more data is trickling in from several clinical trials of the new vaccine, and so far no serious side effects have been reported.
Preliminary results from one study indicate that both a seasonal flu shot and a swine flu shot are effective when given during the same doctor's office visit. However, the government is not recommending that people get the nasal spray versions of the seasonal and swine flu vaccines at the same time.
The nasal sprays contain weakened, live virus, and the government doesn't have data on how a person's immune system would react to exposure to both at once, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The Europeans have lots of data on the use of adjuvanted flu vaccine in the elderly, but I don't think anybody has really good data on adjuvants in children. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has therefore decided that we are not going to take the chance, and has made a policy decision that we are not going to give adjuvanted flu vaccines to kids. We don't have the time to collect substantial data.

WASHINGTON (AP) - A top U.S. health official says the risks from not getting the swine flu vaccine are greater than any potential risks associated with the vaccine.
Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says she's surprised by all the misinformation going around about the new vaccine. She says a good safety record from past vaccines bodes well for the swine flu vaccine now becoming available.
Schuchat says there's no problem associated with getting shots for both the swine flu and seasonal flu on the same day. But health officials recommend a three-week period between receiving the nasal versions of the vaccines.
Schuchat says vaccines remain the best way to protect children and adults from both strains of flu.
She appeared Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

31.7% of patients had no predisposing factors, yet got admitted to ICU as a result of H1N1 infection.
There's a second paper in the same issue of this journal for US patients with much smaller data, since it's really just what's starting to happen here and covers April-June of 2009. . In patients <18 years of age, about 40% had no predisposing conditions. In patients > 18 years, only 17% had no predisposing condition.

The Australian/New Zealand study also pointed out that the increase in ICU admissions was 6x greater than for a normal flu season, and that as opposed to regular flu, swine flu caused a lot more serious disease (ICU admissions) in young people.
So the evidence that H1N1 is a particularly "mild" form of flu, and nothing worse than usual, does not seem to be correct, though so far, it may not be as bad as some people feared.

Which one is it then?
Look at this sentence:

Some have died from IT...what's "it"? The flu, or the secondary infection, or the asthma/chronic heart of respiratory conditions? If it's a secondary infection, why didn't it respond to antibiotics...why didn't a super-antibiotic like Vancomycin take care of it? They should tell us.
Also they never tell you what you REALLY want to know- how many of these children were CONFIRMED cases of H1N1, and whether or not the children received immune-compromising vaccines like the regular flu shot beforehand, and whether or not they received tamiflu.
Why doesn't the article offer some proof of the fact that demand exceeds supply. All the polls coming out suggest it's the other way around.
And another question is......

I agree. Although I think air pollution and stress are a serious factors with asthma. And I wonder if lung problems are associated with congestion from dairy and wheat allergies, which are on the rise thanks to the processing and pollution of these products. A friend of mine has five children who aren't vaccinated whatsoever, yet they have severe allergies and some have asthma.

Of course the article DIDN'T say if these children were already in ill health, diabetes, obese, etc, etc. Typical of MSM, I wouldn't get too excited about it until they decide to print the truth about these poor children and the state of their health PRIOR to getting the swine flu. that she took her daughter with flu symptoms to the clinic and they didn't even test her for swine flu. I hear they are not even testing in some areas. So I have to wonder of the intent of those that don't want to test (?)
